Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more attractive for a variety of reasons. One of the major advantages of EVs is that they emit fewer polluted gases. Other factors that must be addressed include an increase in fuel prices and a decline in energy resources such as fossil fuels. These characteristics have a greater impact on Pakistan’s clean and green image. Electric vehicles are becoming an attractive option for reducing global fossil fuel usage, as well as CO2 emissions, from road transportation. The electricity required to charge an EV’s battery is commonly sourced from the power grid. When EVs are charged by the electrical grid, there are significant power constraints in the system. To promote renewable energy consumption and reduce CO2 emissions, specific solar system-based charging stations should be designed. Other benefits of renewable energy generation include increased grid flexibility and reduced grid congestion. Moreover, the State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, has a huge potential for solar energy. This article investigates the possibility of designing a solar photovoltaic-based EV charging station for security bikes located in the State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. Before installing a PV charging station, the charging station’s feasibility must be studied. The proposed study also analyzes the power reliability, energy cost, and CO2 emissions of a PV-powered charging station. The proposed system’s outcomes are compared to grid-based charging stations. In comparison to other existing approaches, there is a significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including CO2, CO, SO2, and NOX. The proposed study anticipates the economic and environmental benefits of EV charging stations powered by renewable energy resources.
The heliostat field layout in a central receiver solar thermal power plant has significant optical losses that can ultimately affect the overall output power of the plant. In this paper, an optimized heliostat field layout based on annual efficiency and power of 50 MW for the local coordinates of Quetta, Pakistan, is proposed. The performance of two different heliostat field layouts such as radial staggered and Fermat's spiral distribution are evaluated and different design points in a year are considered for the analysis. The field layouts are then optimized using a rejection sampling based Genetic Algorithm (GA). It considers the output power and mean overall efficiency for vernal equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox, and winter solstice as objective functions. The GA optimizes the heliostat field parameters, namely, security distance (DS), tower height (TH), heliostat width to length ratio (WR), and the length of heliostats (LH). The study system was developed in MATLAB for validation. It was observed that for the radial staggered layout, the number of heliostats decreased by 364 and the efficiency was improved by 8.52 % using GA optimization relative to unoptimized results field layout. The annual efficiency for Fermat's spiral configuration was improved by 14.62 % and correspondingly, the number of heliostats decreased by 434.
This paper presents a detailed analysis of commutation failure, AC/DC power flow, and voltage stability of multi-infeed high-voltage direct current (HVDC). The use of HVDC power transmission technology has become common in modern power systems. During the past two decades, HVDC technology has been extensively used for long-distance bulk power transmission to remote areas. Throughout the world, the demand for power has drastically increased in recent years due to industrialization; such situations make HVDC an economic candidate because the distance between power generation plants and load areas is significantly very long. The line-commutated converter (LCC) technology-based HVDC system is well more mature than other available conversion schemes (i.e., voltage source converters), and it is widely used in high-power projects. China had approximately 50 HVDC–LCC links in 2020, and a single LCC-based link with the highest capacity is 12 GW. The installation of several HVDC links in an existing power network has led to a situation where two or more HVDC links terminate in the electric vicinity of each other’s AC network or even in same AC busbar. Such scenarios are termed multi-infeed HVDC system. Multi-infeed HVDC systems bring various challenges related to voltage stability, local and concurrent commutation failure, and AC/DC power flow. Here, the literature available on these phenomena of LCC-based HVDC is discussed for future research. The assumptions and drawbacks of various techniques used for investigating the mentioned phenomena are also highlighted.
This study implemented a bidirectional artificial neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to solve the problem of system resilience in synchronized and islanded grid mode/operation (during normal operation and in the event of a catastrophic disaster, respectively). Included in this setup are photovoltaics, wind turbines, batteries, and smart load management. Solar panels, wind turbines, and battery-charging supercapacitors are just a few of the sustainable energy sources ANFIS coordinates. The first step in the process was the development of a mode-specific control algorithm to address the system’s current behavior. Relative ANFIS will take over to greatly boost resilience during times of crisis, power savings, and routine operations. A bidirectional converter connects the battery in order to keep the DC link stable and allow energy displacement due to changes in generation and consumption. When combined with the ANFIS algorithm, PV can be used to meet precise power needs. This means it can safeguard the battery from extreme conditions such as overcharging or discharging. The wind system is optimized for an island environment and will perform as designed. The efficiency of the system and the life of the batteries both improve. Improvements to the inverter’s functionality can be attributed to the use of synchronous reference frame transformation for control. Based on the available solar power, wind power, and system state of charge (SOC), the anticipated fuzzy rule-based ANFIS will take over. Furthermore, the synchronized grid was compared to ANFIS. The study uses MATLAB/Simulink to demonstrate the robustness of the system under test.
Since thyristor cannot turn off automatically, line commutated converter based high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) will inevitably fail to commutate and therefore auxiliary controls or voltage control devices are needed to improve the commutation failure immunity of the LCC-HVDC system. The voltage control device, a synchronous condenser (SC), can effectively suppress the commutation failure of the LCC-HVDC system. However, there is a need for a proper evaluation index that can quantitatively assess the ability of the LCC-HVDC system to resist the occurrence of commutation failures. At present, the main quantitative evaluation indicators include the commutation failure immunity index and the commutation failure probability index. Although they can reflect the resistance of the LCC-HVDC system to commutation failures to a certain extent, they are all based on specific working conditions and cannot comprehensively evaluate the impact of SCs on suppressing the commutation failure of the LCC-HVDC system under certain fault ranges. In order to more comprehensively and quantitatively evaluate the influence of SCs on the commutation failure susceptibility of the LCC-HVDC system under certain fault ranges, this paper proposes the area ratio of commutation failure probability. The accuracy of this new index was verified through the PSCAD/EMTDC. Based on the CIGRE benchmark model, the effects of different synchronous condensers on LCC-HVDC commutation failure were analyzed. The results showed that the new index could effectively and more precisely evaluate the effect of SCs on commutation failures. Moreover, the proposed index could provide a theoretical basis for the capacity allocation of SCs in practical projects and it could also be utilized for evaluating the impact of other dynamic reactive power compensators on the commutation failure probability of the LCC-HVDC system under certain fault ranges.
