The tip gap existing between the blade tip and casing can give rise to tip leakage flow and interfere with the main flow, which causes unstable flow characteristics and intricate vortex in the passage. Investigation on the tip clearance effect is of great important due to its extensive applications in the rotating component of pumps. In this study, a scaling axial flow pump used in a south-north water diversion project with different sizes of tip clearances was employed to study the tip clearance effect on tip leakage vortex (TLV) characteristics. This analysis is based on a modified turbulence model. Validations were carried out using a high-speed photography technique. The tip clearance effect on the generation and evolution of TLV was investigated through the mean velocity, pressure, and vorticity fields. Results show that there are two kinds of TLV structures in the tip region. Accompanied by tip clearance increasing, the viscous loss in the tip area of the axial flow pump increases. Furthermore, the tip clearance effect on pressure distribution in the blade passage is discussed. Beyond that, the tip clearance effect on vortex core pressure and cavitation is studied.

A preliminary experimental work on a centrifugal pump model specifically designed to transport slurry and multiphase flows is presented. The impeller design corresponds to the so-called “Tesla Bladed Pump” adapted from an existing DiscflowTM pump design for the petroleum deep-sea application. The overall performance results of such a specific pump design are presented for different rotational speeds and discussed in relation to affinity laws coefficients. The results show that the performance of the tested disc pump strongly differs from the conventional centrifugal bladed pump. A one-dimensional approach using complete Euler relation is used to explain the differences in the present case. Moreover, it has been found that available results in open literatures do not correspond to the real optimum conditions, more detailed research work must be performed to get a better understanding on this kind of bladed disc pump.

Experimental overall performances on a double helix screw pump are presented and discussed, focusing on the leakage flow for two different rotational speeds. A comparison between experimental and URANS CFD approaches is performed in order to check the CFD closure models’ validity. Some specific local flow characteristics are extracted from the numerical results which give explanations about leakage backflows inside the screws and local distortion at the pump inlet section.

A two-dimensional boundary element method (BEM) based on the potential flow theory is adopted to study the combined wave radiation and diffraction by a single barge. The wave-body interaction problems are simulated using a mixed Euler-Lagrangian scheme, with fully nonlinear boundary conditions. The numerical schemes are verified through comparing with existing results, which show that both the wave runups on the barge and hydrodynamic forces can be calculated with sufficient accuracy. Cases of a single barge subjected to sway motion and regular waves are studied. The real contribution of this study is the outcomes of the spectral analysis conducted for test cases when wave radiation effects are considered in addition to pure wave diffraction. The cases of sway motion with the same frequency as incident wave are simulated first. It is found that sway motion will reduce the overall horizontal force when the frequency is lower than a critical frequency. After that, the higher the frequency, the bigger the horizontal force increasing effect. When the frequency of sway motion is lower than that of incident wave, in terms of the magnitude of the horizontal force, sway motion of the body will always make the resultant force larger than that of pure diffraction case.

Cavitation is a quasi-periodic process, and its non-stationarity leads to increasingly complex flow field structures. On the other hand, characterizing the flow field with greater precision has become increasingly feasible. However, accurately and effectively extracting the most representative vibration modes and spatial structures from these vast amounts of data has become a significant challenge. Researchers have proposed data-driven modal decomposition techniques to extract flow field information, which have been widely applied in various fields such as signal processing and fluid dynamics. This paper addresses the application of modal decomposition methods, such as dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), and Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (SPOD), in cavitation feature detection in hydraulic machinery. It reviews the mathematical principles of these three algorithms and a series of improvements made by researchers since their inception. It also provides examples of the applications of these three algorithms in different hydraulic machinery. Based on this, the future development trends and possible directions for the improvement of modal decomposition methods are discussed.
