This article focuses on the impact of fly ash from the combustion of municipal sewage sludge (FAMSS) as a cement additive in the amounts of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% (by mass) on selected concrete properties. In the course of the experimental work, water penetration depth and compressive strength measurements were made at various periods of curing (from 2 to 365 days). In addition, the potential impact of FAMSS on the natural environment was examined by determining the leachability of heavy metals. FAMSS-modified concretes showed small values of water penetration depth (lower than 50 mm), as well as good compressive strength (reaching minimum class C30/37 after 130 days of maturing)—similar to the compressive strength obtained for conventional concrete. In addition, the partial replacement of cement with FAMSS has environmental benefits, expressed as a reduction in CO2 emissions. In addition, study has shown that compliance with environmental requirements is associated with heavy metal leaching.
On the basis of the registered indications of the water meter, a study on the size and variability of water consumption on the WULS campus in the academic years 2012/16 is presented. The average specific water consumption at a time when classes are implemented amounted to 26.6 dm3 per student per...
Drying of spruce, beech, willow, and alder sawdust was examined in a laboratory type dryer. The effect of drying air temperature T (25, 60, and 80 °C) and airflow velocity v (0.01, 0.15, and 1.5 m/s) was investigated. The obtained results demonstrated that drying air temperature and airflow velocity have impacts on the drying of sawdust. The experimental dehydration data of sawdust obtained were fitted to theoretical, semi-theoretical, and empirical thin-layer models. The accuracies of the models were estimated using the correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), and reduced chi-square (χ2). All models except the theoretical model of a sphere described the drying characteristics of sawdust satisfactorily. The effect of T and v on the parameters (constants and coefficients) of the drying models were determined. The effect, by the proposed equations, was also described. This work combines aspects of mechanical engineering and modelling of the drying process.
The paper presents results of investigation of the local resistance coefficient ζ in welded polypropylene T-junctions with the internal diameter 13.2 mm. The investigations were performed on an independently constructed test rig. The scope of investigations encompassed the T-junctions, which were (1) properly warmed up and properly pressed, (2) poorly warmed up and poorly pressed, or (3) excessively warmed up and excessively pressed. The local resistance coefficients ζ determined by measurements according to the standard PN-EN 1267:2012(Designation of the Polish Standard) were compared to those determined with use of the nomograms recommended for designing water supply systems and installations. Real values of the coefficients ζ, obtained in measurements were significantly higher than those read from the nomograms. The local resistance coefficients ζ in welded polypropylene T-junctions depend on water flow velocity and the manufacturing precision of a T-junction joint.
The paper presents results of investigations of influence of major head losses on exploitation properties of water supply pipes after 30-year exploitation. The tested materials were cast-iron pipes with the internal diameter of 150 mm. A flowability drop coefficient ηt with average value of 0.45 was determined. Using the measured values of pressure difference Δp determined the absolute roughness of internal walls of the pipes after 30-year exploitation, which was referred to the new pipelines. The absolute roughness for the exploited pipes was equal to k = 27.6 mm, whereas for the new ones it was significantly lower and equal to k = 0.9 mm. Additionally, an analysis of the chemical and mineral composition of sediments gathered in the investigated pipelines was also performed. The top layer of the sediments was dominated by the compounds of a character of the iron hydroxide: goethite (α-FeOOH) and lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH), whereas the internal layer was supplemented by the gypsum and sulfur, which was proven by the investigations performed with the use of scanning electron microscope (SEM). The sediment gathered within the pipes is the main reason of ca. 30-fold increase of the absolute roughness, which resulted in the flowability drop of the exploited water supply pipes.
