Augmented reality (AR) has gained enormous popularity and acceptance in the past few years. AR is indeed a combination of different immersive experiences and solutions that serve as integrated components to assemble and accelerate the augmented reality phenomena as a workable and marvelous adaptive solution for many realms. These solutions of AR include tracking as a means for keeping track of the point of reference to make virtual objects visible in a real scene. Similarly, display technologies combine the virtual and real world with the user’s eye. Authoring tools provide platforms to develop AR applications by providing access to low-level libraries. The libraries can thereafter interact with the hardware of tracking sensors, cameras, and other technologies. In addition to this, advances in distributed computing and collaborative augmented reality also need stable solutions. The various participants can collaborate in an AR setting. The authors of this research have explored many solutions in this regard and present a comprehensive review to aid in doing research and improving different business transformations. However, during the course of this study, we identified that there is a lack of security solutions in various areas of collaborative AR (CAR), specifically in the area of distributed trust management in CAR. This research study also proposed a trusted CAR architecture with a use-case of tourism that can be used as a model for researchers with an interest in making secure AR-based remote communication sessions.

With the increase in urbanization and smart cities initiatives, the management of waste generation has become a fundamental task. Recent studies have started applying machine learning techniques to prognosticate solid waste generation to assist authorities in the efficient planning of waste management processes, including collection, sorting, disposal, and recycling. However, identifying the best machine learning model to predict solid waste generation is a challenging endeavor, especially in view of the limited datasets and lack of important predictive features. In this research, we developed an ensemble learning technique that combines the advantages of (1) a hyperparameter optimization and (2) a meta regressor model to accurately predict the weekly waste generation of households within urban cities. The hyperparameter optimization of the models is achieved using the Optuna algorithm, while the outputs of the optimized single machine learning models are used to train the meta linear regressor. The ensemble model consists of an optimized mixture of machine learning models with different learning strategies. The proposed ensemble method achieved an R2 score of 0.8 and a mean percentage error of 0.26, outperforming the existing state-of-the-art approaches, including SARIMA, NARX, LightGBM, KNN, SVR, ETS, RF, XGBoosting, and ANN, in predicting future waste generation. Not only did our model outperform the optimized single machine learning models, but it also surpassed the average ensemble results of the machine learning models. Our findings suggest that using the proposed ensemble learning technique, even in the case of a feature-limited dataset, can significantly boost the model performance in predicting future household waste generation compared to individual learners. Moreover, the practical implications for the research community and respective city authorities are discussed.

We present a survey of machine learning works that attempt to organize the process flow of waste management in smart cities. Unlike past reviews, we focused on the waste generation and disposal phases in which citizens, households, and municipalities try to eliminate their solid waste by applying intelligent computational models. To this end, we synthesized and reviewed 42 articles published between 2010 and 2021. We retrieved the selected studies from six major academic research databases. Next, we deployed a comprehensive data extraction strategy focusing on the objectives of studies, trends of ML adoption, waste datasets, dependent and independent variables, and AI-ML-DL predictive models of waste generation. Our analysis revealed that most studies estimated waste material classification, amount of generated waste per area, and waste filling levels per location. Demographic data and images of waste type and fill levels are used as features to train the predictive models. Although various studies have widely deployed artificial neural networks (ANN) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) to classify waste, other techniques, such as gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT), have also been utilized. Critical challenges hindering the prediction of solid waste generation and disposal include the scarcity of real-time time series waste datasets, the lack of performance benchmarking tests of the proposed models, the reliability of the analytics models, and the long-term forecasting of waste generation. Our survey concludes with the implications and limitations of the selected models to inspire further research efforts.

Effective water management is crucial in urban and rural settings, requiring efficient usage and timely detection of issues like leakages for sustainability. This paper introduces an integrated framework that combines Digital Twin technology with a multimodal transformer-based model for accurate water usage prediction and leakage detection. The system synchronizes real-time data from various sensors including flow meters, pressure sensors, and thermal imaging devices with a Digital Twin of the water network. Advanced transformer models, specifically the Informer model for long-term time-series prediction and a Water Multimodal Transformer for anomaly detection, process these data to capture complex patterns and dependencies. Experimental results demonstrate the framework’s effectiveness: the Informer model achieved an R2 score of 0.9995 and a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 2.2, outperforming traditional models. For leakage detection, the model attained 98.4% accuracy and precision, an F1 score of 97.6%, a low False Positive Rate of 0.0019, and an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.984. By fusing diverse sensor data and utilizing advanced transformer architectures, the framework provides a comprehensive view of the water network, enabling real-time decision-making, enhancing forecasting accuracy, and reducing water waste. This scalable solution supports sustainable water management practices in both urban and industrial contexts.

The transfer of information is a demanding issue, particularly due to the presence of a large number of eavesdroppers on communication channels. Sharing medical service records between different clinical jobs is a basic and testing research topic. The particular characteristics of blockchains have attracted a large amount of attention and resulted in revolutionary changes to various business applications, including medical care. A blockchain is based on a distributed ledger, which tends to improve cyber security. A number of proposals have been made with respect to the sharing of basic medical records using a blockchain without needing earlier information or the trust of patients. Specialist service providers and insurance agencies are not secure against data breaches. The safe sharing of clinical records between different countries, to ensure an incorporated and universal medical service, is also a significant issue for patients who travel. The medical data of patients normally reside on different healthcare units around the world, thus raising many concerns. Firstly, a patient’s history of treatment by different physicians is not accessible to the doctor in a single location. Secondly, it is very difficult to secure widespread data residing in different locations. This study proposed record sharing in a chain-like structure, in which every record is globally connected to the others, based on a blockchain under the suggestions and recommendations of the HL7 standards. This study focused on making medical data available, especially of patients who travel in different countries, for a specific period of time after validating the required authentication. Authorization and authentication are performed on the Shibboleth identity management system with the involvement of patient in the sanction process, thereby revealing the patient data for the specific period of time. The proposed approach improves the performance with respect to other record sharing systems, e.g., it reduces the time to read, write, delete, and revoke a record by a noticeable margin. The proposed system takes around three seconds to upload and 7.5 s to download 250 Mb of data, which can contain up to sixteen documents, over a stable network connection. The system has a latency of 413.76 ms when retrieving 100 records, compared to 447.9 and 459.3 ms in previous systems. Thus, the proposed system improved the performance and ensured seclusion by using a blockchain.
