This article aims to propose new techniques to detect and distinguish humans from moving machines in indoor environments. Although many research efforts have been already dedicated to humans’ indoor detection, most of the work has been focused on counting people and crowd measurement for consumer business applications. Our objective is to develop a reliable approach for humans’ indoor detection and localization aiming at avoiding collisions inside a mixed Industry 4.0 manned and unmanned environment to enhance personal and equipment safety and to prevent unwanted intrusions. An original aspect of our research is that we have worked on the real-time estimation of humans’ and moving machines’ positions while addressing the problems of multipath components and noise clutter detection. A multipulse constant false alarm rate detection algorithm is also proposed for removing the misdetections due to heavy clutter components in the indoor environment. Four impulse radio ultrawideband transceivers are placed in a specific geometry and data fusion is performed to reduce the influence of multipath and noise on the detection process. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is then used to extract the patterns corresponding to a moving machine and humans and classify them accordingly. Experiments have been carried out in two different indoor environments to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms.

The commercial drone market has substantially grown over the past few years. While providing numerous advantages in various fields and applications, drones also provide ample opportunities for misuse by irresponsible hobbyists or malevolent actors. The increasing number of safety/security incidents in which drones are involved has motivated researchers to find new and ingenious ways to detect, locate and counter this type of vehicles. In this paper, we propose a new method to detect frequency hopping spread spectrum -Gaussian frequency-shift keying (FHSS-GFSK) drone communication signals, in a non-cooperative scenario, where no prior information about the signals of interest is available. The system is designed to detect and retrieve data bit sequences through a compressive sampling approach, which includes the extraction of the reduced spectral information and a soft detection algorithm. The performance of the proposed approach is assessed in terms of bit error rate and compared with that of a Viterbi detector and a neural network-based detector. The effectiveness of the method described in the paper highlights the fact that current UAV communications are not infallible and present real security issues.

In the last years, the commercial drone/unmanned aerial vehicles market has grown due to their technological performances (provided by the multiple onboard available sensors), low price, and ease of use. Being very attractive for an increasing number of applications, their presence represents a major issue for public or classified areas with a special status, because of the rising number of incidents. Our paper proposes a new approach for the drone movement detection and characterization based on the ultra-wide band (UWB) sensing system and advanced signal processing methods. This approach characterizes the movement of the drone using classical methods such as correlation, envelope detection, time-scale analysis, but also a new method, the recurrence plot analysis. The obtained results are compared in terms of movement map accuracy and required computation time in order to offer a future starting point for the drone intrusion detection.

In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission systems, the channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter can be used to add linear precoding to the transmitted signals in order to improve the performance and the reliability of the transmission system. This paper investigates how to properly join precoded closed-loop MIMO systems and nonbinary low density parity check (NB-LDPC). Theqelements in the Galois field, GF(q), are directly mapped toqtransmit symbol vectors. This allows NB-LDPC codes to perfectly fit with a MIMO precoding scheme, unlike binary LDPC codes. The new transmission model is detailed and studied for several linear precoders and various designed LDPC codes. We show that NB-LDPC codes are particularly well suited to be jointly used with precoding schemes based on the maximization of the minimum Euclidean distance (max-dmin) criterion. These results are theoretically supported by extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) analysis and are confirmed by numerical simulations.

International audienceUltra wideband (UWB) radio has emerged as anattractive candidate for short-range wireless communicationsin recent years due to its unique features. However, implementation of UWB radios in order to utilize these features is coupled with some pronounced design challenges. To achieve precise timing synchronization is one of the most crucial task among them and is a key factor to ensure a reliable performance of such systems. In this paper,we present an overview and comparative study of three synchronization algorithms which provide efficient performance under unique signal and channel characteristics of UWB. These algorithms employ cross-correlation, PN code matching and energy detection operations respectively to achieve synchronization. The performance is then analyzed by numerical results under realistic propagation environment that takes into account the severe multipath and interframe interference (IFI). Also, hardware complexity and acquisition speeds of these algorithms are discussed
