The wide acceptability of Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) as the most efficient of all of the symmetric cryptographic techniques has further opened it up to more attacks. Efforts that were aimed at securing information while using AES is still being undermined by the activities of attackers This has further necessitated the need for researchers to come up with ways of enhancing the strength of AES. This article presents an enhanced AES algorithm that was achieved by modifying its SubBytes and ShiftRows transformations. The SubBytes transformation is modified to be round key dependent, while the ShiftRows transformation is randomized. The rationale behind the modification is to make the two transformations round key dependent, so that a single bit change in the key will produce a significant change in the cipher text. The conventional and modified AES algorithms are both implemented and evaluated in terms avalanche effect and execution time. The modified AES algorithm achieved an avalanche effect of 57.81% as compared to 50.78 recorded with the conventional AES. However, with 16, 32, 64, and 128 plain text bytes, the modified AES recorded an execution time of 0.18, 0.31, 0.46, and 0.59 ms, respectively. This is slightly higher than the results obtained with the conventional AES. Though a slightly higher execution time in milliseconds was recorded with the modified AES, the improved encryption and decryption strength via the avalanche effects measured is a desirable feat.

Structured Query Language (SQL) injection and cross-site scripting remain a major threat to data-driven web applications. Instances where hackers obtain unrestricted access to back-end database of web applications so as to steal, edit, and destroy confidential data are increasing. Therefore, measures must be put in place to curtail the growing threats of SQL injection and XSS attacks. This study presents a technique for detecting and preventing these threats using Knuth-Morris-Pratt (KMP) string matching algorithm. The algorithm was used to match user’s input string with the stored pattern of the injection string in order to detect any malicious code. The implementation was carried out using PHP scripting language and Apache XAMPP Server. The security level of the technique was measured using different test cases of SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), and encoded injection attacks. Results obtained revealed that the proposed technique was able to successfully detect and prevent the attacks, log the attack entry in the database, block the system using its mac address, and also generate a warning message. Therefore, the proposed technique proved to be more effective in detecting and preventing SQL injection and XSS attacks

The phishing attack is one of the most complex threats that have put internet users and legitimate web resource owners at risk. The recent rise in the number of phishing attacks has instilled distrust in legitimate internet users, making them feel less safe even in the presence of powerful antivirus apps. Reports of a rise in financial damages as a result of phishing website attacks have caused grave concern. Several methods, including blacklists and machine learning-based models, have been proposed to combat phishing website attacks. The blacklist anti-phishing method has been faulted for failure to detect new phishing URLs due to its reliance on compiled blacklisted phishing URLs. Many ML methods for detecting phishing websites have been reported with relatively low detection accuracy and high false alarm. Hence, this research proposed a Functional Tree (FT) based meta-learning models for detecting phishing websites. That is, this study investigated improving the phishing website detection using empirical analysis of FT and its variants. The proposed models outperformed baseline classifiers, meta-learners and hybrid models that are used for phishing websites detection in existing studies. Besides, the proposed FT based meta-learners are effective for detecting legitimate and phishing websites with accuracy as high as 98.51% and a false positive rate as low as 0.015. Hence, the deployment and adoption of FT and its meta-learner variants for phishing website detection and applicable cybersecurity attacks are recommended.

Purpose: Breast cancer remains a serious public health problem that results in the loss of lives among women. However, early detection of its signs increases treatment options and the likelihood of cure. Although mammography has been established to be a proven technique of examining symptoms of cancer in mammograms, the manual observation by radiologists is demanding and often prone to diagnostic errors. Therefore, computer aided diagnosis (CADx) systems could be a viable alternative that could facilitate and ease cancer diagnosis process; hence this study. Methodology: The inputs to the proposed model are raw mammograms downloaded from the Mammographic Image Analysis Society database. Prior to the classification, the raw mammograms were preprocessed. Then, gray level co-occurrence matrix was used to extract fifteen textural features from the mammograms at four different angular directions: θ={0°, 45°, 90°, 135°}, and two distances: D={1,2}. Afterwards, a two-stage support vector machine was used to classify the mammograms as normal, benign and malignant. Results: All of the 37 normal images used as test data were classified as normal (no false positive) and all 41 abnormal images were correctly classified to be abnormal (no false negative), meaning that the sensitivity and specificity of the model in detecting abnormality is 100%. After the detection of abnormality, the system further classified the abnormality on the mammograms to be either “benign” or “malignant”. Out of 23 benign images, 21 were truly classified as benign. Also, out of 18 malignant images, 17 were truly classified to be malignant. From these findings, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the system are 94.4%, 91.3%, 89.5%, and 95.5%, respectively. Conclusion: This article has further affirmed the prowess of automated CADx systems as a viable tool that could facilitate breast cancer diagnosis by radiologists.

Open and Distance Learning (ODL) students rely majorly on the use of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) tools for online facilitation and other activities supporting learning. With emphasis on ODL students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Oyo Sta te, Nigeria; Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) has being the major medium for online facilitation for the past 5 years. Therefore, this data article presents a survey dataset that was administered to LAUTECH ODL students with a view to assess their readiness to accept and use alternative social media platforms and emerging technologies for online facilitation. The data article also includes questionnaire instrument administered via google form, 900 responses received in spreadsheet formats, chats generated from the responses, the Statistical Package of the Social Sciences (SPSS) file, the descriptive and reliability statistics for all the variables. Authors believe that the dataset will guide policy makers on the choice of social media and emerging technologies to be adopted as a facilitation tool for ODL students. It will also reveal the challenges that could militate against the willingness to use these supplementary modes of learning from students’ perspectives.
