Quantifying drought and wetness fluctuations is of great significance to the regional ecological environment and water resource security, especially in the fragile Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). In this paper, the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was calculated based on the observed data and China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD) in the QTP for the period of 1979–2015, and the drought and wetness evolution based on the SPEI series and respective contribution of temperature and precipitation were also analyzed. Results indicated that meteorological stations are mainly concentrated in the eastern part of the plateau, which cannot reflect the drought and wetness trend of the whole QTP. The linear trend and Mann–Kendall test revealed that SPEI series calculated based on CMFD data at 1-, 3-, 6-, 9-, 12-, and 24-month time scales all showed significant upward trend , indicating that the QTP as a whole tended to be wetter. Spatially, the regions with significant drying and increased drought probability were mainly concentrated in the Qaidam Basin and the southern part of the QTP, and the mean contribution rates of temperature and precipitation variability to SPEI trend in these regions were 60% and −11%, respectively. The regions with significant wetting and decreased drought probability were mainly concentrated in the northeast, central, and western parts of the plateau, and the mean contribution rates of temperature and precipitation variability to SPEI trend were −9% and 61% in these regions. From the statistics in different climatic regions, most of the arid and humid regions in the QTP tended to be drier, while the semiarid regions tended to be wetter.

Understanding the tradeoffs/synergies between ecosystems is crucial to effective watershed ecosystem management and sustainable development. In this study, the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) and Carnegie Ames Stanford Approach (CASA) models were utilized to estimate four ecosystem services (ESs), including water conservation capacity, soil retention, habitat quality, and carbon storage services, in Qinghai Lake Basin between 2000 and 2018. Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) and tradeoffs/synergies criterion (TSC) were used to reveal the relationships between the ESs. The results show that the water conservation capacity, soil retention, habitat quality, and carbon storage service in Qinghai Lake Basin all increased between 2000 and 2018. TSC and LISA revealed that carbon storage and habitat quality, habitat quality and water conservation capacity, and carbon storage and soil retention had the same relationship, as did habitat quality and soil retention. In addition, LISA showed that the relationships between ESs are mainly based on high high clusters that concentrate in the middle of the basin. The analysis also revealed obvious spatial heterogeneity. This study aims to compensate the research deficiencies that affected previous studies of the Qinghai Lake Basin and provide a point of reference for the sustainable development of the basin.

Accurate simulation of snow cover process is of great significance to the study of climate change and the water cycle. In our study, the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD) and ERA-Interim were used as driving data to simulate the dynamic changes in snow depth and snow water equivalent (SWE) in the Irtysh River Basin from 2000 to 2018 using the Noah-MP land surface model, and the simulation results were compared with the gridded dataset of snow depth at Chinese meteorological stations (GDSD), the long-term series of daily snow depth dataset in China (LSD), and China’s daily snow depth and snow water equivalent products (CSS). Before the simulation, we compared the combinations of four parameterizations schemes of Noah-MP model at the Kuwei site. The results show that the rainfall and snowfall (SNF) scheme mainly affects the snow accumulation process, while the surface layer drag coefficient (SFC), snow/soil temperature time (STC), and snow surface albedo (ALB) schemes mainly affect the melting process. The effect of STC on the simulation results was much higher than the other three schemes; when STC uses a fully implicit scheme, the error of simulated snow depth and snow water equivalent is much greater than that of a semi-implicit scheme. At the basin scale, the accuracy of snow depth modeled by using CMFD and ERA-Interim is higher than LSD and CSS snow depth based on microwave remote sensing. In years with high snow cover, LSD and CSS snow depth data are seriously underestimated. According to the results of model simulation, it is concluded that the snow depth and snow water equivalent in the north of the basin are higher than those in the south. The average snow depth, snow water equivalent, snow days, and the start time of snow accumulation (STSA) in the basin did not change significantly during the study period, but the end time of snow melting was significantly advanced.

High spatial–temporal resolution surface net radiation (RN) data are of great significance to the study of climate, ecology, hydrology and cryosphere changes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), but the verification of the surface net radiation products on the plateau is not sufficient. In this study, the China Meteorological Administration Global Land Surface Reanalysis Products (CRA/Land) and ECMWF Land Surface Reanalysis version 5 (ERA5-Land) RN data were validated using ground measurements at daily and monthly time scales, and the spatiotemporal patterns were also analyzed. The results indicate the following: (1) CRA/Land overestimated while ERA5-Land underestimated RN, but CRA/Land RN outperformed ERA5-Land in observations at the daily and monthly scale. (2) The CRA/Land RN data had a larger error in the central part and a smaller error in the northeast of the TP, while ERA5-Land showed the opposite. (3) The spatial patterns of RN revealed by CRA/Land and ERA5-Land data showed differences in most regions. The CRA/Land data showed that the RN of the TP had a downward trend during 2000 and 2020 with a slope of −0.112 W·m−2/a, while the ERA5-Land data indicated an upward trend with a change rate of 0.016 W·m−2/a. (4) Downwelling shortwave radiation (DSR), upwelling shortwave radiation (USR), downwelling longwave radiation (DLR) and upwelling longwave radiation (ULR) are the four components of RN, and the evaluation results indicate that the DSR, DLR and ULR recorded via CRA/Land and ERA5-Land are consistent with the observed data, but the consistency between the USR recorded via CRA/Land and ERA5-Land and the observed data is poor. (5) The inconsistency of the USR data is the main reason for the large differences in the spatiotemporal distribution of CRA/Land and ERA5-Land RN data across the TP.

High-quality precipitation data are vital for hydrological research. In regions with sparse observation stations, reliable gridded data cannot be obtained through interpolation, while the coarse resolution of satellite products fails to meet the demands of small watershed studies. Downscaling satellite-based precipitation products offers an effective solution for generating high-resolution data in such areas. Among these techniques, machine learning plays a pivotal role, with performance varying according to surface conditions and algorithmic mechanisms. Using the Qinghai Lake Basin as a case study and rain gauge observations as reference data, this research conducted a systematic comparative evaluation of nine machine learning algorithms (ANN, CLSTM, GAN, KNN, MSRLapN, RF, SVM, Transformer, and XGBoost) for downscaling IMERG precipitation products from 0.1° to 0.01° resolution. The primary objective was to identify the optimal downscaling method for the Qinghai Lake Basin by assessing spatial accuracy, seasonal performance, and residual sensitivity. Seven metrics were employed for assessment: correlation coefficient (CC), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), coefficient of determination (R2), standard deviation ratio (Sigma Ratio), Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE), and bias. On the annual scale, KNN delivered the best overall results (KGE = 0.70, RMSE = 17.09 mm, Bias = −3.31 mm), followed by Transformer (KGE = 0.69, RMSE = 17.20 mm, Bias = −3.24 mm). During the cold season, KNN and ANN both performed well (KGE = 0.63; RMSE = 5.97 mm and 6.09 mm; Bias = −1.76 mm and −1.75 mm), with SVM ranking next (KGE = 0.63, RMSE = 6.11 mm, Bias = −1.63 mm). In the warm season, Transformer yielded the best results (KGE = 0.74, RMSE = 23.35 mm, Bias = −1.03 mm), followed closely by ANN and KNN (KGE = 0.74; RMSE = 23.38 mm and 23.57 mm; Bias = −1.08 mm and −1.03 mm, respectively). GAN consistently underperformed across all temporal scales, with annual, cold-season, and warm-season KGE values of 0.61, 0.43, and 0.68, respectively—worse than the original 0.1° IMERG product. Considering the ability to represent spatial precipitation gradients, KNN emerged as the most suitable method for IMERG downscaling in the Qinghai Lake Basin. Residual analysis revealed error concentrations along the lakeshore, and model performance declined when residuals exceeded specific thresholds—highlighting the need to account for model-specific sensitivity during correction. SHAP analysis based on ANN, KNN, SVM, and Transformer identified NDVI (0.218), longitude (0.214), and latitude (0.208) as the three most influential predictors. While longitude and latitude affect vapor transport by representing land–sea positioning, NDVI is heavily influenced by anthropogenic activities and sandy surfaces in lakeshore regions, thus limiting prediction accuracy in these areas. This work delivers a high-resolution (0.01°) precipitation dataset for the Qinghai Lake Basin and provides a practical basis for selecting suitable downscaling methods in similar environments.
