Demand forecasting plays a key role in supply chain planning, management and its sustainable development, but it is a challenging process as demand depends on numerous, often unidentified or unknown factors that are seasonal in nature. Another problem is limited availability of information. Specifically, companies lacking modern IT systems are constrained to rely on historical sales observation as their sole source of information. This paper employs and contrasts a selection of mathematical models for short-term demand forecasting for products whose sales are characterized by high seasonal variations and a development trend. The aim of this publication is to demonstrate that even when only limited empirical data is available, while other factors influencing demand are unknown, it is possible to identify a time series that describes the sales of a product characterized by strong seasonal fluctuations and a trend, using selected mathematical methods. This study uses the seasonal ARIMA (autoregressive integrated moving average) model, ARIMA with Fourier terms model, ETS (exponential smoothing) model, and TBATS (Trigonometric Exponential Smoothing State Space Model with Box–Cox transformation, ARMA errors, Trend and Seasonal component). The models are presented as an alternative to popular machine learning models, which are more complicated to interpret, while their effectiveness is often similar. The selected methods were presented using a case study. The results obtained were compared and the best solution was identified, while emphasizing that each of the methods used could improve demand forecasting in the supply chain.

Modelling the time that the system remains in a given state using classical distributions is not always possible. In many cases, empirical distributions are multimodal due to the influence of external, hidden factors and the selection of the best classical distributions may lead to erroneous results. In the article the method of diagnosis of influence of hidden factors into sojourn time of semi-Markov models was presented. In order to capture hidden factors, the authors proposed to model the distributions of the sojourn time with a mixture of distributions, which is a significant novelty in relation to the studies presented in the literature. Hidden factors directly affect the reliability of technical systems. Detecting the existence of these factors enables more accurate modeling of system readiness. Paying attention to irregularities caused by hidden factors makes it possible to reduce system maintenance costs. Such a system model provides complete information and enables a reliable assessment of the system readiness and maintenance.

Energy consumption in electric vehicles is a key element of their operation, determining energy efficiency and one of its main indicators, i.e., range. Therefore, in this article, mathematical models were developed to evaluate the impact of selected factors on energy consumption in electric vehicles. The phenomenon of energy recuperation was also examined. The study used data from mileage measurements of the electric vehicle (EV) driving on a motorway and in built-up areas. The results obtained showed a strong correlation between acceleration, vehicle speed, battery power, and energy consumption. In urban conditions, engine RPM and vehicle speed had an additional impact on energy consumption. Findings from this study can be used to optimize vehicle acceleration control modules to increase their range, develop eco-driving styles for EV drivers, and better understand the energy efficiency factors of EVs.

Effective fleet management is related to the care for their rational use and proper diagnostics. Early detection of potential irregularities enables to prevent failures and carry out transport processes in an undisturbed way. One of the most important components, from the safety point of view, is the braking system. Laboratory tests can be used to determine the durability characteristics of individual components. Individual indications referring to operating conditions would be most desirable. The article, based on a two-year period of testing of a group of Renault vehicles fitted with disc brakes, presents measurement of wearing and tearing the system components (brake discs and brake friction insert) in a function of selected factors, depending on the time and environment in which the transport was carried out. Nonparametric statistical tests were used to analyze the results. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to verify the hypothesis on the insignificance of differences. Their results were compared with the results of ANOVA variance analysis. The significance of factors influencing the degree of brakes wear was checked. Possible directions of using the results of brake wear measurement for rationalization of transport processes were also indicated. Presented method may also be applied to the evaluation of other components (assemblies, subassemblies, systems) of motor vehicles.

Sustainable development and the creation of smart, green cities requires cooperation in many scientific fields, including those related to ecology, mobility, or sustainable management, among others. Environmental protection is a particularly important element here. Atmospheric pollution, due to air movements, spreads over very large areas; therefore, air quality monitoring is crucial to ensure protection from harmful substances. One of the most severe sources of air pollution, accounting for as much as approximately 25% of total annual emissions within the EU, is road transport. Therefore, the European Union has set an ambitious target to reduce total emissions to 55% for cars and 50% for vans by 2030. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become increasingly popular in many scientific fields, including environmental protection and photogrammetry. The use of UAVs to identify harmful pollutants allows them to gain an advantage over conventional detection methods, due to the possibility of remote (therefore safe for humans), faster, and area-based measurements. Given the ever-expanding scale of the use of this technology, this paper presents the possibilities of using UAVs to identify and visualize (map) pollution. The examples presented in the foreign literature, as well as our own research, in imaging the altitude distribution of air pollutants; gaseous pollutants: C6H6, HCHO, SO2; and particulate matter: PM1, PM2.5, PM10 demonstrate the validity of such measures. This research was carried out in the area of one of Poland’s key A4 highways. The maps obtained allow for an area-wise and altitude-wise presentation of one of the significant air pollutants in the EU. In addition, they can be a valuable source of information for the implementation of future projects and the improvement of road infrastructure, thus contributing to the reduction of air pollution and the creation of so-called “green cities”.

This study investigates the vibrations of centrifugal loop dryer machines used in plastic recycling processes. These machines are characterized by large uncertainties, high vibration, and unmodeled dynamics, making the design and maintenance of real-time state estimators for their operational conditions difficult. The present study includes an analysis of the centrifugal loop dryer machines’ vibration characteristics and their influence on operation results based on vibration analysis, frequency response analysis, and expert advice. Two identical loop dryers installed and operated in parallel in a single recycling line were investigated. Measurements were performed using a two-sample measurement design and based on a one-sample statistical method for estimating uncertainty in repeated measurements of data processing. Additionally, a problem connected with incorrect machine operation during high vibration, resulting in insufficient drying of loaded material, was investigated. This was defined as a situation in which some melted plastic is still too wet after mechanical drying, caused by the incorrect installation of damper elements of the holding elements. Finaly, it is recommended that a correction of the machine installation and a control measurement are carried out to determine whether the vibration in the base of the machine still exists. A simplified theoretical vibration analysis of the rotating machine was also carried out in the present paper.
