The security of networked systems has become a critical universal issue that influences individuals, enterprises and governments. The rate of attacks against networked systems has increased dramatically, and the tactics used by the attackers are continuing to evolve. Intrusion detection is one of the solutions against these attacks. A common and effective approach for designing Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) is Machine Learning. The performance of an IDS is significantly improved when the features are more discriminative and representative. This study uses two feature dimensionality reduction approaches: (i) Auto-Encoder (AE): an instance of deep learning, for dimensionality reduction, and (ii) Principle Component Analysis (PCA). The resulting low-dimensional features from both techniques are then used to build various classifiers such as Random Forest (RF), Bayesian Network, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA) for designing an IDS. The experimental findings with low-dimensional features in binary and multi-class classification show better performance in terms of Detection Rate (DR), F-Measure, False Alarm Rate (FAR), and Accuracy. This research effort is able to reduce the CICIDS2017 dataset’s feature dimensions from 81 to 10, while maintaining a high accuracy of 99.6% in multi-class and binary classification. Furthermore, in this paper, we propose a Multi-Class Combined performance metric C o m b i n e d M c with respect to class distribution to compare various multi-class and binary classification systems through incorporating FAR, DR, Accuracy, and class distribution parameters. In addition, we developed a uniform distribution based balancing approach to handle the imbalanced distribution of the minority class instances in the CICIDS2017 network intrusion dataset.

Recently, cybersecurity threats have increased dramatically and the techniques used by the attackers continue to evolve and become ingenious during the attack. Moreover, the complexity and frequent occurrence of imbalanced class distributions in most datasets indicate the need for extra research efforts. The objective of this paper is to utilize various techniques for handling imbalanced datasets to build an effective intrusion detection system from the up-to-date CIDDS-001 dataset. The effectiveness of sampling methods on CIDDS-001 is carefully studied and experimentally evaluated through Deep Neural Networks (DNN), Random Forest, Voting, Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE), and Stacking machine learning classifiers. The proposed system was able to detect attacks with up to 99.99% accuracy when handling the imbalanced class distribution with less number of samples, making it more convenient in real-time data fusion problems that target data classification.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) gives essential information about different cardiac conditions of the human heart. Its analysis has been the main objective among the research community to detect and prevent life threatening cardiac circumstances. Traditional signal processing methods, machine learning and its subbranches, such as deep learning, are popular techniques for analyzing and classifying the ECG signal and mainly to develop applications for early detection and treatment of cardiac conditions and arrhythmias. A detailed literature survey regarding ECG signal analysis is presented in this paper. We first introduce a stages-based model for ECG signal analysis where a survey of ECG analysis related work is then presented in the form of this stage-based process model. The model describes both traditional time/frequency-domain and advanced machine learning techniques reported in the published literature at every stage of analysis, starting from ECG data acquisition to its classification for both simulations and real-time monitoring systems. We present a comprehensive literature review of real-time ECG signal acquisition, prerecorded clinical ECG data, ECG signal processing and denoising, detection of ECG fiducial points based on feature engineering and ECG signal classification along with comparative discussions among the reviewed studies. This study also presents a detailed literature review of ECG signal analysis and feature engineering for ECG-based body sensor networks in portable and wearable ECG devices for real-time cardiac status monitoring. Additionally, challenges and limitations are discussed and tools for research in this field as well as suggestions for future work are outlined.

Smart parking is an artificial intelligence-based solution to solve the challenges of inefficient utilization of parking slots, wasting time, congestion producing high CO2 emission levels, inflexible payment methods, and protecting parked vehicles from theft and vandalism. Nothing is worse than parking congestion caused by drivers looking for open spaces. This is common in large parking lots, underground garages, and multi-story car parks, where visibility is limited and signage can be confusing or difficult to read, so drivers have no idea where available parking spaces are. In this paper, a smart real-time parking management system has been introduced. The developed system can deal with the aforementioned challenges by providing dynamic allocation for parking slots while taking into consideration the overall parking situation, providing a mechanism for booking a specific parking slot by using our Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based application, and providing a mechanism to ensure that the car is parked in its correct place. For the sake of providing cost flexibility, we have provided two technical solutions with cost varying. The first solution is developed based on a motion sensor and the second solution is based on a range-finder sensor. A plate detection and recognition system has been used to detect the vehicle’s license plate by capturing the image using an IoT device. The system will recognize the extracted English alphabet and Hindu-Arabic Numerals. The proposed solution was built and field-tested to prove the applicability of the proposed smart parking solution. We have measured and analyzed keen data such as vehicle plate detection accuracy, vehicle plate recognition accuracy, transmission delay time, and processing delay time.

Recent technology advances in CMOS image sensors (CIS) enable their utilization in the most demanding of surveillance fields, especially visual surveillance and intrusion detection in intelligent surveillance systems, aerial surveillance in war zones, Earth environmental surveillance by satellites in space monitoring, agricultural monitoring using wireless sensor networks and internet of things and driver assistance in automotive fields. This paper presents an overview of CMOS image sensor-based surveillance applications over the last decade by tabulating the design characteristics related to image quality such as resolution, frame rate, dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, and also processing technology. Different models of CMOS image sensors used in all applications have been surveyed and tabulated for every year and application.

Cardiovascular diseases have been reported to be the leading cause of mortality across the globe. Among such diseases, Myocardial Infarction (MI), also known as “heart attack”, is of main interest among researchers, as its early diagnosis can prevent life threatening cardiac conditions and potentially save human lives. Analyzing the Electrocardiogram (ECG) can provide valuable diagnostic information to detect different types of cardiac arrhythmia. Real-time ECG monitoring systems with advanced machine learning methods provide information about the health status in real-time and have improved user’s experience. However, advanced machine learning methods have put a burden on portable and wearable devices due to their high computing requirements. We present an improved, less complex Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based classifier model that identifies multiple arrhythmia types using the two-dimensional image of the ECG wave in real-time. The proposed model is presented as a three-layer ECG signal analysis model that can potentially be adopted in real-time portable and wearable monitoring devices. We have designed, implemented, and simulated the proposed CNN network using Matlab. We also present the hardware implementation of the proposed method to validate its adaptability in real-time wearable systems. The European ST-T database recorded with single lead L3 is used to validate the CNN classifier and achieved an accuracy of 99.23%, outperforming most existing solutions.
