This study proposes a novel DC-DC converter topology that features a quadratic buck-boost voltage gain ratio. The quadratic gain of the converter enables it to achieve superior step-down or step-up capability when the duty cycle is higher or lower than 50 percent, as compared to conventional buck-boost converters. While there exist other quadratic buck-boost converters in the literature, the proposed converter offers unique features such as continuity of input and output currents, which reduces the current stress on the input and filter capacitors, making it a suitable option for renewable energy applications. Additionally, unlike its counterparts that have two high-side switches, the proposed converter features only one high-side and one low-side switch, allowing for a simpler gate-driver design. The proposed topology shares a common ground between the load and the source, and has the lowest stored energy with the same performance, indicating a compact size. Steady-state analysis has been conducted in both continuous and discontinuous conduction modes, and the controller design was studied with the aid of small-signal modelling. Simulation and experimental results from a 100 W prototype were used to validate claims and analyses.

We designed and implemented a single-switch step-up DC-DC converter based on cascaded boost and Luo converters. The proposed converter demonstrated a quadratic voltage gain and a high efficiency, which makes it suitable for renewable energy applications, where a high voltage gain ratio is desired without imposing a high number of bulky items or employing a high duty cycle of the active switches. This converter benefits from the continuity of the input current waveform, which equips the maximum utilisation of renewable energy sources. While a transformer-less high voltage-gain was achieved, the voltage and current stresses of the power switch and diodes were kept low in comparison with the existing quadratic DC-DC converters. We analysed the converter in both continuous and discontinuous conduction modes. A non-ideal model of components was considered for power loss and efficiency calculations and comparisons. Finally, the simulation results were extracted with PLECS and validated with experiments on a 120 W prototype.

This paper has proposed a novel transformerless high gain DC-DC converter. The combination of the Cuk and positive output super lift Luo converter (POSLL converter) has formed the topology of the recommended topology. The continuous input current, the low normalized value of the current/voltage stresses of the semiconductors, the low dimension of the topology due to less stored energy, the common ground point of the input/output terminals, and the high efficiency besides the high voltage gain are the bold features of the proposed topology that makes it suitable for applying in renewable applications and High-intensity discharge lamps (HID). Such a topology has been designed for a continuous conduction mode. However, the function of the converter has been explained in both continuous/discontinuous conduction modes (CCM/DCM). The governing equations of both ideal/non-ideal states have been reported. Moreover, the recommended topology with the recently suggested high gain topologies has been compared in both the ideal/non-ideal modes. The simulation and experimental outcomes have been reported at the end of this study. The simulation in PLECS and experiments on a 120 W prototype have led to substantial results that confirm the validity and applicability of the theoretical analysis on the proposed converter.

An ultra-high step-up, non-isolated DC–DC converter with a continuous input current was developed as a result of this research. This converter’s architecture consists of a voltage multiplier cell (VMC), a positive output super lift Luo converter (POSLLC), and a quadratic boost converter (QBS) (also referred to as a cascaded boost topology (CBT)). Thus, the bold points of the topologies mentioned earlier enhance the voltage gain of the proposed topology. It is important to note that when the duty cycle is at 50%, the converter attains a voltage gain of ten. Additionally, the constant input current of the topology reduces the current stress on the input filter capacitor. This converter’s topology was investigated and studied under various operating conditions: ideal and non-ideal modes, as well as continuous and discontinuous current modes (CCM/DCM). The converter’s efficiency and voltage gain were also compared to those of newly proposed converters. PLECS and MATLAB software tools were used in the investigation of the proposed topology. A 200 V/200 W prototype was constructed. The experimental results validated the theoretical study and the simulation results. The extracted efficiency was 91%.

This paper introduces a novel topology of the proposed converter that has these merits: (i) the topology of the converter is based on conventional boost and buck-boost converters, which has caused its simplicity; (ii) the voltage gain of the converter has provided higher values by the lower value of the duty cycle; (iii) due to the use of high-efficiency conventional topologies in its structure, the efficiency of the converter keeps its high value for a great interval of duty cycle; (iv) besides the increase of the voltage gain, the current/voltage stresses of the semiconductors have been kept low; (v) the continuous input current of this converter reduces the current stress of the capacitor in the input filter. It is worth noting that the proposed converter has been discussed in both ideal and non-ideal modes. Moreover, the operation of the converter has been discussed in both continuous/discontinuous current modes. The advantages of the converter have been compared with recently suggested converters. In addition, the different features of the converter have been discussed for different conditions. In the small-signal analysis, the appropriate compensator has been designed. Finally, the simulation and experimental results have been reported for 90 W output power, 90 V output voltage, 3-times voltage gain, and 100 kHz switching frequency.

This study proposes a novel modified Cuk converter. The proposed converter attempts to resolve the limitations of the conventional converters, such as voltage gain limitations of a canonical Cuk converter. Therefore, the mentioned improvement has made the proposed converters more compatible for renewable energy applications. Moreover, the increase of the voltage gain in the proposed converter has not impacted the efficiency or the voltage stress of the switches, which is common in other voltage boosting techniques, such as cascading methods. Furthermore, the advantages of a Cuk converter, such as continuity of the input current, have been maintained. The average voltage/current stresses of the semiconductor devices and various types of power losses have been calculated and compared with the existing topologies. Moreover, the non-ideal voltage gain of the proposed converters was compared with the other high step-up topologies. Eventually, the simulation results with PLECS, along with the experiments on an 120 W prototype, have been presented for validation.
