In this work, the quality of coatings prepared by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on an AZ31 magnesium alloy were evaluated. This was done by studying the effects of the chemical composition of phosphate-based process electrolytes in combination with different applied current densities on coating thickness, porosity, micro-cracking and corrosion resistance in 0.1 M NaCl. Both processing parameters were studied in four different levels. Mid-term corrosion resistance in 0.1 M NaCl was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and based on this, corrosion mechanisms were hypothesized. Results of performed experiments showed that the chosen processing parameters and electrolyte composition significantly influenced the morphology and corrosion performance of the prepared PEO coatings. The PEO coating prepared in an electrolyte with 12 g/L Na3PO4·12H2O and using an applied current density 0.05 A/cm2 reached the highest value of polarization resistance. This was more than 11 times higher when compared to the uncoated counterpart.
Shot peening is a well-known surface treatment method used for fatigue life improvement of cyclically loaded structural components. Since three main variables are considered in the peening process (peening intensity, coverage and peening media type), there is no direct way to choose the best combination of treatment parameters for the best performance, thus it has to be based on experience and laboratory tests. When shot peening is performed with inadequate parameters, or the peening process is not stable in time (decrease of the peening pressure, deterioration of the peening media and so on), it can result in significant degradation of the treated component fatigue properties, what is commonly called as the “overpeening” effect. When a premature fatigue fracture occurs in operation, the fracture surface analysis is usually the most important method of revealing the damage mechanism. This work is aimed at the study of the relation between the shot peening parameters and the fatigue fracture surface character on an AW 7075 aluminium alloy with an objective of identifying marks of overpeening and investigating the fatigue crack initiation mechanism. After performing the tests, it was observed that shot peening with optimized parameters creates a surface layer that is able to change the mechanism of the fatigue crack propagation and improve fatigue strength. On the other hand, using extensive peening parameters decrease the fatigue strength due to the creation of surface cracks and surface layer delamination.

Orthoferrites are a class of magnetic materials with a magnetic ordering temperature above 600 K, predominant -type antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe-spin system and, depending on the rare-earth ion, a spin reorientation of the Fe spin taking place at lower temperatures. is of particular interest since the spin reorientation is classified as a Morin transition with the transition temperature depending strongly on the Dy-Fe interaction. Here, we report a detailed study of the magnetic and structural properties of microcrystalline powder and bulk single crystal using neutron diffraction and magnetometry between 1.5 and 450 K. We find that, while the magnetic properties of the single crystal are largely as expected, the powder shows strongly modified magnetic properties, including a modified spin reorientation and a smaller Dy-Fe interaction energy of the order of 10 μeV. Subtle structural differences between powder and single crystal show that they belong to distinct magnetic space groups. In addition, the Dy ordering at 2 K in the powder is incommensurate, with a modulation vector of 0.0173(5) , corresponding to a periodicity of ∼58 unit cells.
