To support the understanding of cardiovascular monitoring and physiological signal processing, we present a portable, open-source photoplethysmography (PPG) acquisition platform developed for educational and research applications. The system is built entirely with commercial off-the-shelf components and centers around an ESP32 microcontroller, which performs high-speed analog signal acquisition at 500 samples per second, alongside real-time control, and wireless communication. A cross-platform, Python-based graphical user interface enables real-time signal visualization, peak detection, and the computation of heart rate variability (HRV) metrics, including RMSSD and SDNN, during offline analysis. All hardware and software resources are openly available to enable replication and further development. This project emphasizes accessibility, transparency, and hands-on learning in biomedical signal acquisition. System functionality is validated offline through controlled data collection from human subjects, demonstrating results consistent with established HRV benchmarks.
An active damping controller based on the switched stiffness technique is developed and applied to vibration mitigation in a lightly damped structure. The controller either increases or decreases the system stiffness according to a state-dependent rule. A novel stability analysis based on the Floquet theory is proposed and employed to analyze the mathematical model of a one-degree-of-freedom system where the friction forces are taken into account. This novel analysis allows us to prove the exponential stability of the system origin, to establish a tuning procedure for the controller gain, to solve an optimization problem and to show the controller robustness against parameter uncertainties. Experimental verification is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the controller, and it is shown that the controller is feasible for vibration control problems.
This paper presents a low-cost real-time photoplethysmography (PPG) monitoring platform based on an ESP32-S3 SuperMini, a MAX30102 sensor operating at 200 samples per second, and a desktop graphical user interface (GUI). The proposed system establishes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication between the embedded node and the PC interface to stream both infrared (IR) and red (RED) channels simultaneously. On the embedded side, the firmware acquires, packages, and transmits the raw PPG signals while estimating the heart rate in beats per minute (BPM) for each channel. On the desktop side, the GUI displays the received signals and the corresponding BPM values in real time, providing a practical and accessible monitoring environment. The main contribution is the integration of real-time dual-channel PPG acquisition, BLE transmission, embedded BPM estimation, desktop GUI visualization, and experimental validation within a single compact and low-cost platform. The proposed architecture is aimed at low-cost biomedical applications and offers a compact solution for signal acquisition, wireless communication, visualization, and basic physiological estimation. Experimental results show that the platform can reliably capture and transmit both channels, supporting its use as a foundation for future work on more advanced PPG processing and physiological monitoring applications. Furthermore, the system performance was validated by comparing the estimated heart rate against measurements obtained from two medical reference devices: a pulse oximeter and a digital sphygmomanometer. The results demonstrated good agreement between the measurements, supporting the feasibility of the proposed platform for non-invasive physiological monitoring applications.
