The construction industry is a vital part of every nation’s economy. Construction activities influence the social, environmental, and economic aspects of sustainability. There are so many barriers to sustainable construction and demolition waste management (C&DWM). This study aims to identify barriers for effective sustainable C&DWM in developed and developing countries. To achieve the objective, 11 barriers have been selected and identified based on an excessive and comprehensive literature review, and then reviewed by experts. These reviewed barriers were further examined by various experts within different organizations using a questionnaire survey. Ranking of the barriers was carried out using the Relative Importance Index (RI), and the results were statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Practical solutions were proposed to overcome the identified barriers. The overall ranking of barriers by RI indicates that insufficient attention paid to C&DWM, lack of law enforcement, lack of regulation, and financial constraints represent the four major barriers to sustainable C&DWM in these countries. The findings of this study and the proposed solutions are enablers for decision-makers to develop effective strategies to tackle construction and demolition wastes in sustainable manners.

The global building and construction industry faces increasing challenges related to efficiency, performance, and sustainability, which significantly impact project success, particularly in developing economies. The timely and successful completion of building and construction projects is crucial for economic development; however, various barriers hinder effective project execution. This study identifies and empirically analyzes the critical barriers affecting building and construction project performance in two developing countries with distinct economic profiles, Ghana and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). A comprehensive literature review and expert interviews identified fourteen key barriers to project performance, ensuring clarity and technical relevance. Using an empirical questionnaire survey targeting experienced professionals, including contractors, clients, and consultants, the study employed the Relative Importance Index (RII) and Spearman’s correlation analysis to rank and examine the interrelationships between these barriers. The findings reveal that poor communication (RII = 0.831, ranked 1st), project cost and schedule constraints (RII = 0.806, ranked 2nd), and inadequate monitoring and evaluation (RII = 0.786, ranked 3rd) are the most significant barriers to project success in both contexts. These challenges align with global sustainability concerns, particularly Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which emphasize resilient infrastructure and sustainable urban development. The study highlights the crucial role of decision makers, regulatory frameworks, and financial planning in overcoming these barriers and enhancing project outcomes. By addressing these constraints, the study provides actionable insights for policymakers, project managers, and industry stakeholders to improve project execution efficiency and foster sustainable building and construction practices. Future research should explore adaptive mitigation strategies and technological innovations that enhance project delivery efficiency in developing economies.

The combined thermal and photovoltaic technology in PV/T systems is considered as a greatly promising technology for smart buildings. Thus, investigations for enhancing the PV/T performance are still proceeding. This research presents an investigation for novel configurations of cooling jets for the PVT system. The linear and circular distribution for the inlet jets considering regular and irregular positioning for all the jets as new cooling configurations are implemented. Moreover, the proposed geometrical configurations are optemized regarding the performance to identify the most suitable configuration that achieves the optimum efficiency and temperature. Furthermore, a novel hybrid ANN model is presented for predicting the performance of the PVT systems. This model combines the multi-feedforward neural network (MFFNN) with an optimization technique called reptile search algorithm (RSA). The proposed model can process the studied parameters to predict the PVT performance parameters (top surface temperature, temperature un-uniformity, outlet temperature, and efficiencies). The proposed MFFNN-RSA model minimized the mean square error to less than 0.4857×10-3. The maximum temperature decrease achieved by the presented configuration reached 60.62K compared to the uncooled case, while the minimum temperature un-uniformity reached 1K and 6K for 400 and 1000 W/m2, respectively. The increase of the ambient temperature found to decrease the temperature un-uniformity in all the cases. The irregular jet with the linear distribution was found to achieve the optimum performance of the overall, thermal, and electrical efficiencies of 63.5%, 49.6%, and 14.25%, respectively. Furthermore, the electricity production cost was reduced by 11.6%, and the yearly CO2 emissions were reduced by 215.3 kg/m2 compared to the normal PV system. The proposed irregular-line distribution of the jets is found to be the best configuration regarding the temperature of the PV model and the overall efficiency considering the pumping losses.

This study examined awareness, perceived benefits and risks, adoption barriers and future adoption potential for Augmented Wood among construction professionals in South East Nigeria. A quantitative dominant convergent mixed methods design combined a survey of 254 registered architects and engineers with 24 semi-structured interviews. Survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-sample t-tests, and ordinal logistic regression with 95% confidence intervals reported for all effect sizes. Interview data were analyzed thematically using Cohen’s kappa (κ = 0.81) for inter-rater reliability and integrated with the quantitative findings. Professional awareness was low, with an overall mean of 2.45 on a five-point scale. A one-sample test confirmed that awareness was significantly below the moderate benchmark of 3.00, t(253) = −9.04, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = −0.57 (95% CI: −0.69, −0.45). Product unavailability, the absence of a regulatory framework and high procurement cost were the most severe barriers, with mean scores of 4.28, 4.17 and 4.11 respectively. Ordinal logistic regression revealed that architects showed greater willingness than engineers to recommend the material to clients (OR = 0.618, 95% CI: 0.444–0.861, p = 0.004), after controlling for years of experience and state of practice, although both groups reported strong readiness for training. Interview accounts explained the conditional nature of this interest, especially the need for local testing, demonstration projects, standards and accessible supply. The findings provide an evidence base for professional education, pilot projects, product certification and policy development in Nigeria and comparable markets.
