Site-specific weed management and selective application of herbicides as eco-friendly techniques are still challenging tasks to perform, especially for densely cultivated crops, such as rice. This study is aimed at developing a stereo vision system for distinguishing between rice plants and weeds and further discriminating two types of weeds in a rice field by using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and two metaheuristic algorithms. For this purpose, stereo videos were recorded across the rice field and different channels were extracted and decomposed into the constituent frames. Next, upon pre-processing and segmentation of the frames, green plants were extracted out of the background. For accurate discrimination of the rice and weeds, a total of 302 color, shape, and texture features were identified. Two metaheuristic algorithms, namely particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the bee algorithm (BA), were used to optimize the neural network for selecting the most effective features and classifying different types of weeds, respectively. Comparing the proposed classification method with the K-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifier, it was found that the proposed ANN-BA classifier reached accuracies of 88.74% and 87.96% for right and left channels, respectively, over the test set. Taking into account either the arithmetic or the geometric means as the basis, the accuracies were increased up to 92.02% and 90.7%, respectively, over the test set. On the other hand, the KNN suffered from more cases of misclassification, as compared to the proposed ANN-BA classifier, generating an overall accuracy of 76.62% and 85.59% for the classification of the right and left channel data, respectively, and 85.84% and 84.07% for the arithmetic and geometric mean values, respectively.

Currently, destructive methods are often used to measure the quality parameters of agricultural products. These methods are often complex, time consuming and costly. Recently, studying to find a solution to the disadvantages of destructive methods has become a major challenge for researchers. Non-destructive methods can be useful for the rapid detection of the quality parameters of agricultural products. In this study, hyperspectral imaging was used to evaluate the non-destructive quality parameters of Red Delicious (Red Delicious) and Golden Delicious (Golden Delicious) apples, including pH, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acid (TA) and total phenol (TP). In order to predict the quality characteristics of apples, the partial least squares (PLS) method with different pre-processing was used. The developed models were evaluated using the root mean square parameters of RMSECV validation error, correlation coefficient (Rcv) and standard deviation ratio (SDR). The results showed that in Red Delicious, for pH, TA, SSC and TP the best forecasting methods were SNV, SNV, MSC and normalized pre-processing with the regression coefficient values of 0.9919, 0.9939, 0.9909 and 0.9899, respectively. In Golden Delicious (Golden Delicious), for pH, TA, SSC and TP, the first derivative, (smoothing and second derivative), normalize (and SNV and normalize) preprocessors were selected as the best prediction models, with values of 0.9989, 0.9989, 0.9999 and 0.9989, respectively. The results related to an artificial neural network also showed that in hyperspectral imaging, the best state of the feed-forward network structure with the LM training algorithm was R = 0.93, Performance = 0.005 and RMSE = 0.03 in 325 inputs, 5 outputs and 2 hidden layers. The results showed that hyperspectral imaging has different predictive capabilities for the qualitative characteristics studied in this study with high accuracy.

Color segmentation is one of the most thoroughly studied problems in agricultural applications of remote image capture systems, since it is the key step in several different tasks, such as crop harvesting, site specific spraying, and targeted disease control under natural light. This paper studies and compares five methods to segment plum fruit images under ambient conditions at 12 different light intensities, and an ensemble method combining them. In these methods, several color features in different color spaces are first extracted for each pixel, and then the most effective features are selected using a hybrid approach of artificial neural networks and the cultural algorithm (ANN-CA). The features selected among the 38 defined channels were the b* channel of L*a*b*, and the color purity index, C*, from L*C*h. Next, fruit/background segmentation is performed using five classifiers: artificial neural network-imperialist competitive algorithm (ANN-ICA); hybrid artificial neural network-harmony search (ANN-HS); support vector machines (SVM); k nearest neighbors (kNN); and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). In the ensemble method, the final class for each pixel is determined using the majority voting method. The experiments showed that the correct classification rate for the majority voting method excluding LDA was 98.59%, outperforming the results of the constituent methods.

To use machine vision technology in visual quality control of cereal seeds, sufficient knowledge is necessary. In this work, the capability of machine visual systems, equipped with industrial digital cameras for the identification and classification of seven-grain groups in wheat seed samples, was studied. Two statistical models and three support vector machines were employed in this study. Through image processing of 21,000 single grains, the shape, colour, and textural features of each grain were determined. Ninety-one features were ranked through the ReliefF method. The shape features were the most prominent, followed by the textural and colour features. Among the five models tested, the highest classification accuracy was obtained using quadratic support vector machine (QSVM) and the first 35 features. In the test run of this model with independent data, the classification accuracy for sound white wheat, small white wheat, broken white wheat, shrunken white wheat, red wheat, barley and rye were, respectively, 98.7, 98, 99.3, 90.7, 99, 100, and 97.3%, with an overall average accuracy of 97.6%. In the context of this study, the machine vision system—comprising an industrial digital camera and quadratic support vector machine or non-linear discriminate analysis method—was identified as a valuable system in the investigation of the visual qualities of wheat seeds.

This study aims to investigate the effect of different drying methods on the thermal, qualitative, and antioxidant properties and pH of terebinth. To perform the experiments in this study, the hot air (HA), infrared (IR), microwave (MW), hot air–infrared (IR–HA), and hot air–microwave drying (MW–HA) methods were considered. The results showed that the minimum drying time was obtained by the hot air–microwave (MW–HA) method. However, the lowest specific energy consumption (SEC) and the highest energy efficiency (ηe) were obtained by the MW method. Considering the color criteria, the best method was obtained by the MW–HA method. The highest amount of rehydration ratio (RR) and the lowest shrinkage (Sb) of the dried terebinth samples were obtained using the MW dryer compared with other drying methods. The MW and MW–HA methods resulted in higher contents of total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant capacity (AntiOX) than other methods. According to the results of this study, the most effective drying method for terebinth was determined to be the MW and MW-HA methods.

In this study, artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to predict the draft force of a rigid tine chisel cultivator. The factorial experiment based on the randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used to obtain the required data and to determine the factors affecting the draft force. The draft force of the chisel cultivator was measured using a three-point hitch dynamometer and data were collected using a DT800 datalogger. A recurrent back-propagation multilayer network was selected to predict the draft force of the cultivator. The gradient descent algorithm with momentum, Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm, and scaled conjugate gradient descent algorithm were used for network training. The tangent sigmoid transfer function was the activation functions in the layers. The draft force was predicted based on the tillage depth, soil moisture content, soil cone index, and forward speed. The results showed that the developed ANNs with two hidden layers (24 and 26 neurons in the first and second layers, respectively) with the use of the scaled conjugate gradient descent algorithm outperformed the networks developed with other algorithms. The average simulation accuracy and the correlation coefficient for the prediction of draft force of a chisel cultivator were 99.83% and 0.9445, respectively. The linear regression model had a much lower accuracy and correlation coefficient for predicting the draft force compared to the ANNs.
