In this study, acoustic wave scattering in a homogeneous media by an obstacle is examined in the case of plane wave excitation and the formation of acoustic jets is explored. Spectral element method (SEM) is employed for the approximate solution of scattered acoustic waves’ calculations. An important finding of the study is the concurrence of whispering gallery modes and acoustic jet in the case of proper adjustment of structural parameters, which has not been reported before in the literature. Furthermore, numerical findings based on SEM calculations show that the main characteristics of acoustic jet can be explored and controlled by changing the targeted parameters. Microscopy and imaging applications utilizing acoustic wave can benefit from the conducted study presented in this manuscript.

We numerically investigate the generation of photonic nanojets (PNJs) and the excitation of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) supported by both smooth and corrugated dielectric micro-cylinders under point-source illumination. Results show that the location of the point-source defines the location and properties of PNJs, whereas stability of WGMs exists in smooth micro-cylinders but vanishes in corrugated ones. It is shown that the location of the point-source acts as an additional degree of freedom for controlling the characteristics of the generated PNJs for both smooth and corrugated dielectric micro-cylinders. Furthermore, the influence of the point-source location on the stability of the excited WGMs was diminished for the smooth micro-cylinders, while being fully pronounced for their corrugated counterparts.

A novel, programmable, mode-locked fiber laser design is presented and numerically demonstrated. The laser programmability is enabled by an intracavity optical phase-only pulse shaper, which utilizes the same linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (LC-FBG) from its two opposite ends to perform real-time optical Fourier transformation. A binary bit-pattern generator (BPG) operating at 20-Gb/s and producing a periodic sequence of 32 bits every 1.6 ns, is subsequently used to drive an optical phase modulator inside the laser cavity. Simulation results indicate stable programmable intensity profiles for each optimized user defined 32 code words. The laser operated in the self-similar mode-locking regime, enabling wave-breaking free operation. The programmable 32 bit code word targeting a specific intensity profile was determined using 100 generations of the genetic algorithm. The control of ultrashort pulse intensity profiles on the picosecond and femtosecond time scales is difficult. The process of stretching and compressing the pulse in the time domain allows for a slower BPG to impose a predefined phase modulation prior to pulse compression. This results in control over the fine features of the intensity profile of the compressed pulse on a picosecond or femtosecond time scale inside the laser cavity. The stability of the proposed scheme depends on the consistency and accuracy of the BPG rise and fall times in practice.

The performance of intensity modulation (IM) with direct detection (DD) transmission systems is enhanced through a novel combination of multidimensional coding, Nyquist pulse shaping, and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) at the transmitter using a finite impulse response (FIR) filter. A 24-dimensional (24D) extended Golay binary code effectively transforms each incoming 12-bit message into a 24-bit codeword, achieving a coding efficiency of 0.5 bits per symbol for a 56 Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) transmission over 80 km of single mode fiber. While this encoding process introduces a 50% overhead, the required bandwidth is maintained at 56 GHz through doubling the symbol rate and the application of Nyquist pulse shaping with a raised cosine (RC) profile and a roll-off factor of zero, resulting in a flat power spectral density. This flat distribution contrasts with standard OOK transmission at 56 Gb/s with a roll-off factor of 1.0, where signal power is predominantly concentrated in the lower frequency range. One of the key advantages of the 24D Golay code is its substantial error correction capability. However, the benefits of this multidimensional coding and Nyquist pulse shaping extend beyond error correction. It is shown that, while both the proposed and standard OOK methods exhibit comparable performance in a white Gaussian noise channel at back-to-back, they differ significantly under frequency selective power fading conditions caused by the interplay of chromatic dispersion (CD) and direct detection. The misalignment between the frequency notches introduced by the FIR pre-EDC and those inherent in the channel response, especially severe at lower frequencies, favors transmission schemes with a flat power spectral density, like the 24D Golay-coded Nyquist pulses.

The interaction of light with micro-scale dielectric structures has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its potential applications in various fields ranging from photonics to biomedical imaging. In this context, this study investigates the generation of twin photonic jets from a dielectric micro-cylinder illuminated by two point-sources. The effect of different parameters on the jet's shape profile and length was analyzed. Those parameters include the cylinder's refractive index and radius, the source distance from the cylinder, and the vertical displacement between the sources. Innovatively, this study introduces the concept of ‘Horn Jets' to characterize the twin photonic jets resulting from the illuminated dielectric micro-cylinder, marking a significant conceptual advancement in the field. Moreover, the generation of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) is investigated. The outcomes obtained through the spectral element method highlight the possibility of generating WGMs by meticulously selecting the cylinder's radius and refractive index, under the scenario of two-point-source illuminations. The results show that the magnitude of the WGMs resonance significantly lies on the vertical displacement due to the resulting interference pattern's dark and bright fringes with the cylinder edges.
