The aim of this study was to compare certain important fruit quality parameters such as sugars, organic acids, total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and volatile compounds of 10 commercial strawberry cultivars grown in the research and experimental area in Yaltir Agricultural Company located in Adana provinces of Turkey. As for the sugar content of strawberry fruits, fructose was identified as the dominant sugar and the highest value (4.43%) was found in the cultivar “Rubygem”. In terms of organic acid, among the examined strawberry cultivars, “Calinda” had the greatest level of citric acid (711.45 mg g−1). Regarding vitamin C content, the highest amount was found in the cultivar “Sabrina” (25.08 mg 100 g−1). Ellagic acid was the main phenolic acid in all examined cultivars (except the “Plared” cultivar), and the highest amount was detected in the “Fortuna” cultivar (3.18 mg 100 g−1). We found that the cultivar FL-127 had the highest total phenolic content (158.37 mg gallic acid equivalent 100 g−1 fresh weight base). Regarding antioxidant capacities, the highest value (88.92%) was found in the cultivar Victory among all the cultivars studied. The detailed analysis of volatile compounds was performed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and 34 compounds were detected. Among them, esters, acids, and alcohols were found to be the major volatile compounds in strawberry fruits. In conclusion, strawberry fruits belong to ten cultivars showed abundant phenolic compounds and at the same time have high antioxidant activity.

The cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is octoploid (2n = 8x = 56) and has been the focused fruit species of which an increasing number of molecular and genetic research has been conducted in recent years. The aim of this study is to identify the relationships between sucrose metabolism, invertase enzyme activity and gene expression in four different fruit development periods (red, pink, green and white) of two commercially important strawberry varieties ‘Rubygem’ and ‘Fortuna’. The metabolite profiles (glucose, fructose, sucrose and total sugar content) of two varieties were discovered to be extremely similar. The highest amount of total sugar was found in red fruits, while the lowest was obtained from green fruits. Invertase represents one of the key enzymes in sucrose metabolism. The lowest invertase activity was obtained from the green fruits in ‘Rubygem’ and ‘Fortuna’ during four developmental periods. In these varieties, the amount of sucrose was found to be close to glucose and fructose and the lowest amount was detected in green period, while invertase activity was relatively high during red and pink periods and invertase gene expression was determined at high levels in both primers (St-4 and St-6) in the green period. The results of the study indicated that sugar content and invertase activity were positively correlated while enzyme activity and gene expression were negatively correlated.

A comprehensive lexicon is a necessary communication tool between the panel leader and panelists to describe each sensory stimulus potentially evoked by a product. In the current scientific breeding and trading scenario, a multilingual sensory lexicon is necessary to ensure the consistency of sensory evaluations when tests are conducted across countries and/or with international panelists. This study aimed to develop a reference multilingual lexicon for raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) and blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) to perform comparative sensory tests through panels operating in different countries using their native language. Attributes were collected from state-of-the-art literature and integrated with a detailed description of the sensory stimulus associated with each term. A panel of sensory judges was trained to test lexicon efficacy. After training, panelists evaluated three cultivars of blueberry and raspberry through RATA (Rate All That Apply), which allowed missing attributes to be excluded while rating those actually present. Results showed the discerning efficacy of the lexicon developed can be a valuable tool for planning sensory evaluations held in different countries, opening up further possibilities to enrich blueberry and raspberry descriptor lists with emerging terms from local experience and evaluations of berry genotypes with peculiar traits.

Global climate change and possible drought scenarios have forced researchers, breeders and producers to create new plant patterns that will adapt to changing climate and soil conditions for production of horticultural plants in the future. Here, the most important topic is the shortening of the physiological growth period of plants due to abiotic stress. In other words, reductions experienced in both cooling needs and maturation periods cause negative impacts on flowering times and amounts, and this causes significant loss of yield. In recent years, the production of berry fruits that will adapt to drought conditions has attracted the attention of breeders and producers. The aim of this study is to discuss in detail the possibilities of producing berry fruits that are resistant to drought and negative climate conditions and to present research results and recommendations about this topic. In this study, the production opportunities in arid and negative climate conditions for the berry fruits of strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.), mulberry (Morus spp.), fig (Ficus carica L.), blackberry (Rubus fruticosus L.), chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa L.), rosehip (Rosa canina L.), raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) and blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) were researched and recommendations are made about production methods for some varieties and types resistant to drought in berry fruit cultivation.

Fennel (Foeniculum officinale Mill. var. dulce Mill) is an annual aromatic plant of the Lamiaceae family. Its fruits are processed to obtain essential oil for use in the food industry and cosmetics. The physical parameters of the fruits, i.e. length (5.50–8.00 mm), width (1.50–2.00 mm), volume of 100 fruits (1.36 × 10−6 m3), density of 100 fruits (935.82 kg/m3), average volume of one fruit (1.36 × 10−8 m3), average equivalent diameter of one fruit (2.96 mm), angle of repose, stainless steel (from 16 to 22°), angle of repose, black steel (from 19 to 28°), angle of repose, plywood (from 18 to 24°), and their chemical parameters, i.e. moisture (13.49%), ash (6.49%), protein (18.25%), essential oil (8.38%), vegetable oil (10.52%), and total carbohydrates (51.04%) were determined for the fruits. The adsorption and desorption isotherms of the fennel fruits were obtained using the static gravimetric method at two temperatures, 20 and 40 °C. The Halsey model provided a good description of the sorption isotherms, which were of type II according to Brunauer's classification. The increase in the temperature led to a significant decrease in the monolayer moisture. The contamination on the fruit surface at three relative humidities (0.43, 0.59, and 0.76) at 20 °C was determined.

This study was conducted to quantify the variation in environmental impacts of strawberry production across Europe to inform breeders and fruit producers on practical ways to improve the sustainability of their products. We assessed the environmental impact of different strawberry genotypes and cultivation systems, including open field and protected systems, conducted by seven different partners in Europe. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology was applied. Fifty‐seven strawberry genotypes were included in the analysis, covering 19 different field trials. The functional unit (FU) was 1 kg of freshly harvested ripe strawberry fruit at the farm gate, produced between 2017 and 2024. The results for the climate change impact category showed an average of 0.58 kg CO 2 eq./FU among all the genotypes analyzed. The highest value was 3.8 kg CO 2 eq./FU for a greenhouse system, and the lowest was 0.21 kg CO 2 eq./FU for a polyethylene‐covered tunnel system. The results highlighted the crucial roles of cultivation systems, genotype selection, produced yield, and various input and management practices in the environmental performance of strawberry production. The work was based on trials connected to the breeding and testing of strawberry genotypes. The results thus help breeders to develop high‐quality strawberry cultivars designed to meet sustainable production under different climatic environments by showing the critical environmental impacts associated with their products. The comparison of the environmental performance of different strawberry cultivation systems across Europe even provides a benchmark to support fruit producers and policymakers in decision‐making for shaping sustainable strawberry production in Europe.
