Anodizing a simple and effective method to improve the wear resistance of 6061 aluminum alloy. In this study, the microstructure of 6061 aluminum alloy oxide films (AAO) was adjusted by changing the electrolyte temperature (5, 15, and 25 °C) using 160 g/L sulfuric acid as the electrolyte. The phase composition, microstructure, and morphological characteristics of the specimens were detected using X-ray diffractometer and field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hardness, elastic modulus, and tribological properties of the films were examined using hardness testers and a rotary friction tester. The results showed that as the temperature of the electrolyte increases, the surface of the oxide films changes from uniformly distributed small-sized pores to a coral-like loose porous structure, and the thickness of the films increases. The electrolyte temperature has a significant effect on the friction performance of the AAO films. When the solution temperature decreases from 25 to 5 °C, the steady-state friction coefficient decreases from 0.46 to 0.39. According to the morphology of the wear tracks, it can be determined that the main wear mechanism of AAO films gradually changes from delamination wear to abrasive and adhesive wear, and the wear rate drops by ~69%.

Cobalt–chromium (Co-Cr) alloys have been widely used as dental-restoration materials for many years. This study sought to investigate whether selective laser melting (SLM) is a more appropriate process than traditional casting (CAST) for fabricating dental Co-Cr alloys. Metallurgical microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Vickers hardness and nanoindentation tests, and friction and wear tests were used to evaluate the microstructure, surface compositions, mechanical properties, and wear resistance, respectively. Additionally, the biocompatibilities and cell adhesion of the alloys were evaluated with L-929 fibroblasts via CCK-8 assay, Live/Dead staining, flow cytometric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) assay. The XPS results showed that the two alloys were all mainly comprised of Co, Cr, and O. The hardness in the CAST group equaled 7.15 ± 0.48 GPa, while in the SLM group, it equaled 9.06 ± 0.49 GPa. The friction coefficient of SLM alloys remained at approximately 0.46, but the CAST specimens fluctuated significantly. SLM alloys exhibited shallower wear scars and less wear debris compared with CAST alloys, simultaneously. Additionally, there were higher survival and expression of cell-adhesion-related genes on SLM alloys of L-929 cells, which meant that the deleterious effect on L-929 cells was significantly reduced compared with that for the CAST alloys. Overall, the wear resistances and biocompatibilities of the Co-Cr dental alloys were dramatically affected by the fabrication technique. The SLM technique is advantageous over the CAST technique for fabricating Co-Cr dental alloys.

CrWN glass molding coatings were deposited by plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering (PEMS). The microstructure and thermal stability of these coatings were investigated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, atomic force microscope and nanoindentation tests. The as-deposited coating exhibited an aggravated lattice expansion resulting in a constant hardness enhancement. The vacuum annealing induced surface coarsening and the spinodal decomposition of the coating accompanied by the formation of nm-sized c-CrN, c-W2N, and h-WN domains. The annealed coating with low W content had mainly a face-centered cubic (f.c.c) matrix, strain fields caused by lattice mismatch caused hardness enhancement. Following an increase in W content, the annealed coating showed a mixed face-centered cubic (f.c.c) and hexagonal close-packed (h.c.p) matrix. The large volume fraction of h-WN phases seriously weakened the coating strengthening effect and caused an obvious drop in hardness.
