Anodizing a simple and effective method to improve the wear resistance of 6061 aluminum alloy. In this study, the microstructure of 6061 aluminum alloy oxide films (AAO) was adjusted by changing the electrolyte temperature (5, 15, and 25 °C) using 160 g/L sulfuric acid as the electrolyte. The phase composition, microstructure, and morphological characteristics of the specimens were detected using X-ray diffractometer and field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hardness, elastic modulus, and tribological properties of the films were examined using hardness testers and a rotary friction tester. The results showed that as the temperature of the electrolyte increases, the surface of the oxide films changes from uniformly distributed small-sized pores to a coral-like loose porous structure, and the thickness of the films increases. The electrolyte temperature has a significant effect on the friction performance of the AAO films. When the solution temperature decreases from 25 to 5 °C, the steady-state friction coefficient decreases from 0.46 to 0.39. According to the morphology of the wear tracks, it can be determined that the main wear mechanism of AAO films gradually changes from delamination wear to abrasive and adhesive wear, and the wear rate drops by ~69%.

Process parameters have a significant impact on the filament diameter of extrusion 3D printing. To precisely control filament diameter, this paper proposes a novel method based on experiments to guide process parameter design. Additionally, an extrusion 3D printing device was developed, by which the influence of crucial process parameters and rheological properties on the diameter of printed filaments could be investigated experimentally and theoretically. Furthermore, poly (l-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) was used as a case study to detail the design procedure of the proposed method. The printable range of the process parameters for PLCL was acquired, and a fitting surface for the experimental data was calculated to guide the process parameter design. According to the results of the experiment, by adjusting the process parameters, PLCL filaments with five different diameters of 120, 130, 140, 150, and 160 μm can be fabricated with a 100 μm nozzle. The deviations between the actual filament diameters and the desired diameter are less than 5 μm, which validates the reliability of the proposed method.

For the extrusion 3D printing process, the printing temperature has a significant impact on the filament formation process because the rheological properties of the printed materials are extremely thermal sensitive, which requires a high temperature control accuracy of the print head. This paper presents a numerical and experimental investigation on the temperature field of a homemade print head. A finite element simulation model for analyzing the temperature field of the print head was established, by which the temperature distribution inside the print head can be acquired. Moreover, to improve the temperature control accuracy, an improved configuration was proposed, and two schemes were compared. The temperature control error dropped from 28% to 6.2% with the improved print head, which was verified experimentally. Furthermore, printing trials were conducted by the optimized print head. The filament diameter could be regulated by changing the temperature of the print head, which validates the feasibility to control the filament diameter during the extrusion process via temperature regulation.

In this study, minimum quantity coolant/lubrication (MQCL) is found to have significant impact on the surface quality and mechanical properties of the micromilled thin-walled work piece that is the core component of an aeroaccelerometer. Three kinds of coolants were used in the micromilling process to analyze their effects on surface quality and mechanical properties of the component. The experiment results show that an appropriate dynamic viscosity of coolant helps to improve surface roughness. The high evaporation rate of the coolants can enhance the cooling performance. Comparing with the dry machining case, MQCL has better performance on improving tool wear, surface quality, and mechanical properties of the micromilled work piece. It yielded up to 1.4–10.4% lower surface roughness compared with the dry machining case in this experiment. The machined work piece with the best mechanical properties and the one with the worst mechanical properties appeared in the ethyl alcohol and the dry machining case, respectively. The reasons for deteriorating surface quality and mechanical properties in dry machining cases are also analyzed. For improving the micromilling process, the penetration and cooling effect of the coolants are more important. This paper gives references to obtain better service performance of the component by improving the micromilling process.
