Embrapa 122/V-2000. Considering the importance of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) as a potential source of renewable energy and the lack of information regarding its cultivation. In this study the growth variables and flowering of sunflower cv. Embrapa 122/V-2000 were evaluated under different levels of salinity of irrigation water (ECw) and doses of nitrogen. The experiment was conducted in protected environment at UFCG, between July and October 2009. Randomized block design was used to test 5 levels of salinity of irrigation water - ECw (0.5 - control, 1.6; 2.7; 3.8 and 4.9 dS m-1) and 4 doses of nitrogen (50; 75; 100 and 125% of nitrogen recommended for pot experiment) in 5 x 4 factorial scheme, with 3 replications. The increase of ECw from 0.5 dS m-1 promoted reduction in plant height, stem diameter, dry biomass of aerial parts, external and internal diameter of head, in addition to delay in flowering of plants. The internal diameter of head was most affected by salinity with a linear reduction of 7.6% for unit increase of ECw (dS m-1) and is the variable which best expresses the effects of water salinity on the sunflower. Nitrogen doses ranging from 0.46 to 0.64 g kg-1 of soil did not affect significantly the studied variables' of growth and flowering of sunflower cv. Embrapa 122/V-2000

O tomate ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) is at the top of the ranking among the most consumed vegetables in the world and can be grown in open fields and, mainly, in agricultural greenhouses. Therefore, the adjustment of phosphate fertilizer in its cultivation can influence higher yields, fruit quality and nutritional status. In view of the socioeconomic importance of tomatoes due to their antioxidant properties, bioactive compounds, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals and the guarantee of jobs for farmers, this literature review seeks to present a study that provides technical and scientific data on general and the important role of phosphate fertilization in tomato cultivation. The main focus of this study is justified by the absence of studies that analyze the general aspects and the responses of the tomato in function of the water deficit and doses and sources of phosphorus. Through the analysis of secondary data available in the literature related to the theme, there is a difficulty in adjusting the phosphate fertilizer according to the appropriate choice of doses and sources to be applied. Furthermore, as it is a vegetable sensitive to water deficit, fruit yield and quality can be influenced by the amount of water that is applied and the management of irrigation in combination with the correct amount of fertilizer.

Scleroderma verrucosum is a species of mushroom belonging to the family Sclerodermataceae found in the Americas and Europe. This study aimed to evaluate the 70% ethanol extract of the vegetative part of the mushroom S. verrucosum for qualitative phytochemical constituents and total content of flavonoids and phenolics, and the DPPH free radical reduction activity. Mushroom extract was prepared in 70% ethanol solution. Qualitative phytochemical assay was performed for different groups using colorimetric reagents. The contents of total flavonoids and phenolics, and antioxidant activity in reducing the DPPH free radical were quantitatively determined. The positive presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, triterpenoids, steroids, tannins, organic acids, reducing sugars, aromatic compounds and carboxylic acids were observed. The extract exhibited total flavonoid content = 60.14 QE 100 g-1, for total phenolics = 309.14 GAE 100 g-1 and free radical reduction of = 5.97 µg mL-1. Mushroom extract Scleroderma verrucosum demonstrated the presence of several medicinal important phytochemical groups as well as total flavonoid and phenolic content that exhibit the potential for antioxidant activity.

Embrapa 122/V-2000.

Considering the lack of information on salt tolerance of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) seedlings, a study was carried out to evaluate the effects of water salinity on the vigor and initial growth in a completely randomized design with 8 levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw), varying from 1.0 to 8.0 dS m-1. Salinity delayed the germination process, but relative reduction was observed only above ECw 4.43 dS m-1. Seedling vigor and growth decreased with increasing salinity, however, water at 4 dS m-1 resulted in 85% of vigor and seedlings with more than 50% growth in comparison to the lowest salinity treatment. Based on soil salinity, the passion fruit may be considered as 'moderately tolerant' to salinity during the initial phase.
