Southern Corn Rust (SCR) is one of the most destructive diseases in corn production, significantly affecting corn quality and yields globally. Field-based fast, nondestructive diagnosis of SCR is critical for smart agriculture applications to reduce pesticide use and ensure food safety. The development of spectral disease indices (SDIs), based on in situ leaf reflectance spectra, has proven to be an effective method in detecting plant diseases in the field. However, little is known about leaf spectral signatures that can assist in the accurate diagnosis of SCR, and no SDIs-based model has been reported for the field-based SCR monitoring. Here, to address those issues, we developed SDIs-based monitoring models to detect SCR-infected leaves and classify SCR damage severity. In detail, we first collected in situ leaf reflectance spectra (350–2500 nm) of healthy and infected corn plants with three severity levels (light, medium, and severe) using a portable spectrometer. Then, the RELIEF-F algorithm was performed to select the most discriminative features (wavelengths) and two band normalized differences for developing SDIs (i.e., health index and severity index) in SCR detection and severity classification, respectively. The leaf reflectance spectra, most sensitive to SCR detection and severity classification, were found in the 572 nm, 766 nm, and 1445 nm wavelength and 575 nm, 640 nm, and 1670 nm wavelength, respectively. These spectral features were associated with leaf pigment and leaf water content. Finally, by employing a support vector machine (SVM), the performances of developed SCR-SDIs were assessed and compared with 38 stress-related vegetation indices (VIs) identified in the literature. The SDIs-based models developed in this study achieved an overall accuracy of 87% and 70% in SCR detection and severity classification, 1.1% and 8.3% higher than the other best VIs-based model under study, respectively. Our results thus suggest that the SCR-SDIs is a promising tool for fast, nondestructive diagnosis of SCR in the field over large areas. To our knowledge, this study represents one of the first few efforts to provide a theoretical basis for remote sensing of SCR at field and larger scales. With the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with hyperspectral measurement capability, more studies should be conducted to expand our developed SCR-SDIs for SCR monitoring at different study sites and growing stages in the future.

The knowledge of the area and spatial distribution of paddy rice fields is important for water resource management. However, accurate map of paddy rice is a long-term challenge because of its spatiotemporal discontinuity and short duration. To solve this problem, this study proposed a paddy rice area extraction approach by using the combination of optical vegetation indices and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. This method is designed to overcome the data-missing problem due to cloud contamination and spatiotemporal discontinuities of the traditional optical remote sensing method. More specifically, the Sentinel-1A SAR and the Sentinel-2 multispectral imager (MSI) Level-2A imagery are used to identify paddy rice with a high temporal and spatial resolution. Three vegetation indices, namely normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and land surface water index (LSWI), are estimated from optical bands. Two polarization bands (VH (vertical-horizontal) and VV (vertical-vertical)) are used to overcome the cloud contamination problem. This approach was applied with the random forest machine learning algorithm on the Google Earth Engine platform for the Jianghan Plain in China as an experimental area. The results of 39 experiments uncovered the effect of different factors. The results indicated that the combination of VV and VH band showed a better performance compared with other polarization bands; the average producer’s accuracy of paddy rice (PA) is 72.79%, 1.58% higher than the second one VH. Secondly, the combination of three indices also showed a better result than others, with average PA 73.82%, 1.42% higher than using NDVI alone. The classification result presented the best combination is EVI, VV, and VH polarization band. The producer’s accuracy of paddy rice was 76.67%, with the overall accuracy (OA) of 66.07%, and Kappa statistics of 0.45. However, NDVI, EVI, and VH showed better performance in mapping the morphology. The results demonstrated the method developed in this study can be successfully applied to the cloud-prone area for mapping paddy rice to overcome the data missing caused by cloud and rain during the paddy growing season.

Sugarcane is an important sugar source in America and is mainly planted in the states of Florida and Louisiana. The purpose of this study was to predict the sugarcane yield in these two states from 2008 to 2016. Three statistical sugarcane yield models (i.e., the CNDVI, K–M, and SiPAR models) were applied to predict yield in America, using remote sensing and weather data. To verify the robustness of models, model parameters obtained in places (i.e., Reunion Island and Southwestern China) far away from America were used. The results showed that the SiPAR model outperformed the CDNVI and K–M models for yield prediction. Solar radiation was an important constraint factor to ensure the statistical model’s robustness under different conditions. The CNDVI model had the lowest robustness because of the absence of solar radiation, although it could reflect the yield trend to some extent. The K–M model failed to predict the low sugarcane yield, owing to the lack of consideration of temperature and soil water stresses. Florida had a low sugarcane yield in the west and southwest; however, Louisiana had high sugarcane yield in the same directions. This study demonstrated the robustness of the SiPAR model and investigated the sugarcane yield status in Florida and Louisiana. It can be a reference for similar studies in the future.

Vegetation plays a vital role in the terrestrial ecosystem. Vegetation variations not only result from climatic and environmental change but also feed back to the climate through biogeochemical and biogeophysical processes. Previous studies have mainly focused on the influence of environmental factors on vegetation changes, but the interactions between vegetation and the prevalent environmental factors in the karst areas of southwestern China have been poorly understood. Based on remote sensing data, this study used trend analysis and Granger causality analysis to investigate vegetation trends, the driving factors, and their interactions during the period 2001 to 2021. In summary, we explored how these factors influenced vegetation growth and how vegetation changes fed back to produce ecosystems and environmental variations in southwestern China during this period. The results showed improvements in water conditions as well as a vegetation greening trend in most of the regions of southwestern China, together with a weakening trend of rocky desertification and an increasing trend of vegetation growth during the period. Both terrestrial water storage and vegetation growth in the energy-limited alpine regions are sensitive to temperature. Natural restoration is suggested in this area. Vegetation growth in the karst areas is sensitive to water stress-related variables due to the particular geological and soil characteristics. The bidirectional causality relationship between vegetation greening and the environment factors in many of these areas indicates that the vegetation changes can also significantly affect water balance and conditions. Ecological engineering projects are suggested in this area. The vegetation growth in the SC Basin, HN, HB, GD, and eastern GX is also sensitive to water stress, while these regions are vulnerable to waterlogging. This study helps to improve our understanding of ecosystem management and promote sustainable development in southwestern China.
