The elderly represent one of the categories that was most affected by the pandemic period. The purpose of this research was to analyze the ways in which mass media and very often contradictory information flows influenced the lives and personal communications of the Romanian elderly population during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to conduct the research, we used a mixed-methods approach. For the quantitative research, we gave a questionnaire to the elderly population of Romania, and for the qualitative research, we conducted interviews. Our quantitative sample included 881 retired persons with an age between 55 and 94 years old; the mean age was 71.48 years old with 6.6 years standard deviation. The elderly described the pandemic period using negative words: fear, loneliness, anxiety, disaster; the channel they mostly watched and trusted was the TV; they were aware of the measures they had to take to protect themselves; they missed most of the meetings with the family and the main problems they had were represented by loneliness, the inability to be with their families or the lack of access to medical services. The elderly’s mass media consumption during the pandemic was mostly represented by TV consumption; the information spread by mass media was sometimes contradictory; it influenced their behavior and may have generated feelings of anxiety among them.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic in Romania exacerbated pediatric antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics may be related to increased multidrug-resistant bacteria. The main aim of this study was to assess pediatric AMR trends and phenotypes, while a secondary objective was to investigate the potential links with hospital abandonment. Methods: This retrospective study from the Children’s Emergency Hospital “Louis Țurcanu”, Timișoara, focused on AMR patterns in 2019 pre-pandemic, 2021 pandemic, and 2023 post-pandemic. The following phenotypes were assessed: MRSA, MRCoNS, VRE, ESBL, CRO, MDR, XDR, and PDR. Results: There were 3530 total patients and 6885 total samples. There were 69.92% of the total samples resistant to at least one antimicrobial class, (72.69% in 2019, 67.05% in 2021, 69.16% in 2023). Specifically, resistance towards penicillins remained high across the entire period (57.45–60.93%), while the following classes presented elevated resistance in the pandemic: cephalosporins (42.91%), combination therapies (40.95%), reserve antibiotics (38.89%), and cyclines (13.83%). As for resistance phenotypes, MRSA and MRCoNS peaked during the pandemic (36.08% and 81.43%, respectively) while VRE remained relatively constant. Overall ESBL declined in 2023 to 14.45%, while overall CRO peaked during the pandemic (8.81%). Overall MDR fell during the pandemic (64.47%), while overall XDR peaked in 2019 (9.87%). No PDR cases were observed. Pediatric abandonment was an increasing concern, with regional cases rising from 5.42% (2019) to 9.83% (2023). Compared to the general population, increased antimicrobial resistance in abandoned patients was observed for fluoroquinolones (50.00%), Aminogycolsides (60.00%), reserve antibiotics (70.00%), cephalosporins (60.00%), and urinary antibiotics (60.00%). Resistance to cephalosporins (OR = 5.17, p = 0.0304) and reserve antibiotics (OR = 5.64, p = 0.0049) were key predictors of abandonment risk. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic influenced resistance trends, with notable peaks in MRSA, MRCoNS, and CRO. Post-pandemic patterns suggest continued escalation of resistance. The association between resistant infections and pediatric abandonment highlights the need for robust antimicrobial stewardship and social intervention policies.

The study aims to explore the influence of bullying on suicidal tendencies among students who were victims of this phenomenon., 130 responses were collected, of which: 103 are from women, and 27 from men. Since the main purpose of the research is to identify whether the students who were victims of bullying had suicidal tendencies, it was found that the presence of bullying explains a considerable proportion (30%) of the emergence of suicidal tendencies among victims. At the same time, another purpose was to explore the relationship between the social network and the development of a suicidal behavior, and with the use of partial correlation to test the association between poor communication with parents and the emergence of suicidal tendencies while controlling the bullying variable, we identified a significant score confirming the relationship between these two elements.

Our study aimed to examine how care centers for older persons acted and adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic period by considering the opinions of the beneficiaries, employees, and managers of such centers. The research was conducted between February and June 2022, and we used a mixed-methods approach. For the quantitative research, we applied a questionnaire to 430 institutionalized older persons from Timis County, Romania. For the qualitative analysis, we conducted interviews with 31 institutionalized older persons, 7 employees, and 4 managers. Most institutionalized older persons were mainly satisfied with their lives in the care centers. The main difficulties they faced were the impossibility of being close to loved ones and the difficulty of adapting to the living conditions within the center. Additionally, the older persons were satisfied with their interactions with the staff of the care centers. The conducted research provides a view of the lifestyle of older persons in care centers during the pandemic. It highlights their struggles and can be used as a reference point for further improvement of the lifestyle of older persons within care centers.

Religiosity and empathy have been identified as two key variables that may significantly influence an individual’s social justice attitude and behavior. Despite their significance, studies addressing the relationships between these variables are rare. Thus, the present study aims to explore the associations between interpersonal empathy, instrumental religiosity, and social justice values using the conceptual framework of motivated information processing theory. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to assess the hypothetical relationships between these variables. The findings indicate that personal instrumental religiosity, social interaction, and cognitive behavior are positively associated with the level of adherence to both instrumental and social terminal values of social justice. In contrast, social instrumental religiosity exerts only a direct influence on the instrumental values of social justice. This study also revealed the role of social interaction and cognitive behavior as mediators between personal instrumental religiosity and the instrumental and social terminal values of social justice. The findings underscore the imperative for researchers to devise educational programs that acknowledge and promote the significance of religion and empathy in fostering a more equitable and compassionate society.
