The present study is focused on the synthesis and structural properties of amorphous terbium metal–organic framework thin film (TbMOF-TF) and its transformation to terbium oxide by pyrolysis at 450 °C in the air. The crystalline (cTbMOF) and amorphous (aTbMOF) films were prepared by solvothermal synthesis using different amounts (0.4 and 0.7 mmol) of the modulator (sodium acetate), respectively. The powders were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The varied chemical composition of the surface of TbMOFs and TbxOy was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that aTbMOF had been fully transformed to a Tb4O7 phase with a cubic crystal structure at 450 °C. The amorphous aTbMOF-TF film was prepared by dropping a colloidal solution of amorphous precursor nanocrystals on the SiO2/Si substrates covered with Pt as an interlayer. XPS confirmed the presence of Tb in two states, Tb3+ and Tb4+. The amorphous film has a rough, porous microstructure and is composed of large clusters of worm-like particles, while terbium oxide film consists of fine crystallites of cubic fluorite cF-TbOx, c-Tb4O7, and c-Tb2O3 phases. The surface topography was investigated by a combination of confocal (CM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The amorphous film is porous and rough, which is contrast to the crystalline terbium oxide film.

This study presents the synthesis, structural and luminescence properties for lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (LnMOFs), which belong to the sub-class of coordination polymers. The series of nanosized LnMOFs (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Eu0.5Gd0.5, Tb0.5Gd0.5 and Eu0.5Tb0.5) was prepared by solvothermal synthesis using a modulator (sodium acetate). We investigated the various surface chemistry compositions of the isostructural LnMOFs with a [Ln(btc)] structure (BTC: Benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS confirmed the mixed-valent Eu3+ and Eu2+ compounds, and the presence of Tb in both +3 and +4 valence states, and one +3 valency of Gd. A nanostructure of mixed LnMOFs (EuGd, TbGd and EuTb) with a rod-like shape is related to luminescence properties. The MOFs (EuTb and EuGd) presented Comission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) chromaticities of x = 0.666 and y = 0.331, and x = 0.654 and y = 0.348, respectively, in the red region. They were better than the values desired for use in commercial phosphors, which are x = 0.64 and y = 0.35. For [Tb/Gd(btc)], the CIE coordinates were x = 0.334 and y = 0.562, presenting emissions in the green region. Bimetallic LnMOFs are very promising UV light sensors for biological applications.

This contribution describes the preparation, coupled with detailed characterization, of Nb2O5 nanofibers and their application in lithium–sulfur batteries for the improvement of electrochemical performance. The utilization of reactive needle-less electrospinning allowed us to obtain, in a single step, amorphous pre-ceramic composite PAN/Nb2O5 fibers, which were transformed into porous ceramic Nb2O5 nanofibers via calcination. Thermogravimetric studies defined that calcination at 600 °C results in crystalline ceramic fibers without carbon residues. The fibrous morphology and mean diameter (614 ± 100 nm) of the ceramic nanofibers were analyzed via scanning and transmission electron microscopy. A surface area of 7.472 m2/g was determined through nitrogen adsorption measurements, while a combination of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy was used to show the crystallinity and composition of the fibers after calcination—single T-phase Nb2O5. Its performance in the cathode of lithium–sulfur batteries was defined through electrochemical tests, and the obtained results were compared to a similar blank electrode. The initial discharge capacity of 0.5 C reached a value of 570 mAh∙g−1, while the reversible capacity of 406 mAh∙g−1 was retained after 200 cycles, representing a capacity retention of 71.3%. The presence of Nb2O5 nanofibers in the carbon cathode inhibits the shuttle effect through polysulphide confinement, which originates from porosity and chemical trapping.

This study details the sustainable synthesis and characterization of electrospun zinc oxide nanofibers, uniquely derived from industrial waste streams. Our approach leverages diverse industrial byproducts—specifically sal ammoniac skimming from hot-dip galvanizing, electric arc furnace dust, and galvanization flue dust—as sustainable raw materials. Following hydrometallurgical treatment with various leaching agents (HCl, (NH4)2CO3, or H2SO4) to obtain zinc-rich leachates, electrospinning solutions were formulated. The resulting fibers were subsequently calcined, yielding three distinct ZnO-based materials. Comprehensive characterization by XRD, SEM-EDX, and TEM revealed that the choice of leaching strategy significantly influenced the resultant fibers’ morphology and chemical composition. To demonstrate the potential applicability of these waste-derived materials, their photocatalytic activity was assessed through the degradation of methylene blue dye under UVA irradiation. ZnO fibers derived from HCl leaching exhibited remarkable photodegradation capabilities, achieving nearly complete dye removal within 690 min at optimal catalyst-to-dye ratios. Conversely, the H2SO4-prepared sample displayed impaired efficiency, primarily due to the formation of an undesirable Al2ZnO4 phase stemming from high aluminum content in the input waste, a critical consideration for waste-to-product strategies. The results showed that the cost-effective ZnO fibers obtained by electrospinning from industrial waste products have potential for applications in photocatalytic water treatment.

The present work aims at the preparation and characterization of ceramic layered composite prepared from fine submicron-sized Al2O3 with the addition of electrospun graphene-coated Al2O3 fibers (Al2O3/G-Fs) by Spark Plasma Sintering with double pressure sintering process. A layered composite containing 2.5 wt. % of Al2O3/G fibers in three homogeneous layers was prepared and compared with the pure monolithic Al2O3 material obtained under the same conditions. The microstructures of the samples were studied by optical microscopy, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The presence of graphene after the sintering in the final composite was proved by Raman spectroscopy. The effect of the graphene-coated fibers on the composite`s microstructure and mechanical properties was described along with the fractographic analysis. Graphene on the surface of the electrospun Al2O3 fibers suppressed the grain growth which dominantly takes place during the sintering of the composite, which significantly influenced the character of the fracture. While predominantly intergranular fracture occurs in the monolithic fracture surface, the fracture character becomes transgranular with the addition of layers of Al2O3/G-Fs. Fracture toughness improvement took place because of the presence of small pores, in order of a few nanometers, which showed high energy absorption and provided self-induced crack propagation inhibition.

This study investigates the relationships between chemical composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties in the Nb–Ta–B ternary alloys over a wide composition range after long-term heat treatment at 1323 K for approximately 2900 h. In particular, the phase composition and resulting microstructures were analyzed, and nanomechanical properties, namely indentation hardness and indentation modulus, of the individual phases and two-phase microstructural constituents were evaluated. Microstructural and phase analyses performed using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction revealed single-phase, two-phase, and three-phase microstructures depending on the composition. The presence of the BCC + MB eutectic microstructure confirms the extension of the binary eutectic reaction, L → BCC + MB, into the ternary compositional range. In the Ta-rich alloy, the Ta2B boride was observed, despite being stable only at substantially higher temperatures in the corresponding binary system. Within the investigated alloy compositions, no ternary phase was identified, and all observed borides correspond to binary borides exhibiting solubility of the third element. Nanomechanical measurements were performed on the MB, MB2, and M3B4 phases, as well as on the BCC + MB, BCC + Ta2B, and M3B4 + M5B6 regions. The eutectic BCC + MB structure exhibited the lowest hardness and indentation modulus, whereas the MB boride in the Ta-rich alloy showed the highest values. The M3B4 and M5B6 phases exhibited similar hardness values. Overall, the results provide new experimental insights into the phase constitution and nanomechanical behavior of the investigated Nb–Ta–B alloys and establish an experimental basis for future thermodynamic modeling of the B–Nb–Ta ternary system.
