The full deployment of sixth-generation (6G) networks is inextricably connected with a holistic network redesign able to deal with various emerging challenges, such as integration of heterogeneous technologies and devices, as well as support of latency and bandwidth demanding applications. In such a complex environment, resource optimization, and security and privacy enhancement can be quite demanding, due to the vast and diverse data generation endpoints and associated hardware elements. Therefore, efficient data collection mechanisms are needed that can be deployed at any network infrastructure. In this context, the network data analytics function (NWDAF) has already been defined in the fifth-generation (5G) architecture from Release 15 of 3GPP, that can perform data collection from various network functions (NFs). When combined with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques, a full-scale network optimization can be supported, according to traffic demands and service requirements. In addition, the collected data from NWDAF can be used for anomaly detection and thus, security and privacy enhancement. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to present the current state-of-the-art on the role of the NWDAF towards data collection, resource optimization and security enhancement in next generation broadband networks. Furthermore, various key enabling technologies for data collection and threat mitigation in the 6G framework are identified and categorized, along with advanced ML approaches. Finally, a high level architectural approach is presented and discussed, based on the NWDAF, for efficient data collection and ML model training in large scale heterogeneous environments.

Recently Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have evolved considerably towards real world applications, going beyond entertaining activities and use. With the advent of Fifth Generation (5G) cellular networks and the number of UAVs to be increased significantly, it is created the opportunity for UAVs to participate in the realisation of 5G opportunistic networks by carrying 5G Base-Stations to under-served areas, allowing the provision of bandwidth demanding services, such as Ultra High Definition (UHD) video streaming, as well as other multimedia services. Among the various improvements that will drive this evolution of UAVs, energy efficiency is considered of primary importance since will prolong the flight time and will extend the mission territory. Although this problem has been studied in the literature as an offline resource optimisation problem, the diverse conditions of a real UAV flight does not allow any of the existing offline optimisation models to be applied in real flight conditions. To this end, this paper discusses the amalgamation of UAVs and 5G cellular networks as an auspicious solution for realising energy efficiency of UAVs by offloading at the edge of the network the Flight Control System (FCS), which will allow the optimisation of the UAV energy resources by processing in real time the flight data that have been collected by onboard sensors. By exploiting the Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) architectural feature of 5G as a technology enabler for realising this offloading, the paper presents a proof-of-concept implementation of such a 5G-enabled UAV with softwarized FCS component at the edge of the 5G network (i.e., the MEC), allowing by this way the autonomous flight of the UAV over the 5G network by following control commands mandated by the FCS that has been deployed at the MEC. This proof-of-concept 5G-enabled UAV can support the execution of real-time resource optimisation techniques, a step-forward from the currently offline-ones, enabling in the future the execution of energy-efficient and advanced missions.

Modern agriculture is increasingly challenged by the need for scalable, sustainable, and connectivity-resilient digital solutions. While existing smart farming platforms offer valuable insights, they often rely heavily on centralized cloud infrastructure, which can be impractical in rural or remote settings. To address this gap, this paper presents AGRARIAN, a hybrid AI-driven architecture that combines IoT sensor networks, UAV-based monitoring, satellite connectivity, and edge-cloud computing to deliver real-time, adaptive agricultural intelligence. AGRARIAN supports a modular and interoperable architecture structured across four layers—Sensor, Network, Data Processing, and Application—enabling flexible deployment in diverse use cases such as precision irrigation, livestock monitoring, and pest forecasting. A key innovation lies in its localized edge processing and federated AI models, which reduce reliance on continuous cloud access while maintaining analytical performance. Pilot scenarios demonstrate the system’s ability to provide timely, context-aware decision support, enhancing both operational efficiency and digital inclusion for farmers. AGRARIAN offers a robust and scalable pathway for advancing autonomous, sustainable, and connected farming systems.

The upcoming sixth-generation (6G) networks are expected to be more heterogeneous, scalable, reliable, secure and energy-efficient. 6G services and applications will benefit from the fast data transmission rates, global coverage, precise positioning, and widespread intelligence capabilities provided by 6G technology. In this complex scenario, new attack surfaces and vectors will emerge, due to the distributed, disaggregated, dynamic, programmable and open nature of the entire end-to-end 6G infrastructure along with the fragmentation of data, as well as the need for supporting cross-platforms interoperability, making the application of security and trust fundamentally challenging. To securely manage services in the future 6G mobile networks along with the set of functions ruling its management, conceptual work is needed to defining functional blocks supporting a secure end-to-end 6G systems management. This is especially critical in handling specific functionalities, such as network disaggregation, risk and threats business impact, energy-efficiency, self-configuration or dynamic discovery. This paper positions an innovative 6G security services management architecture, which builds on a set of innovative building blocks, leveraging key technologies, such as AI-assisted models and Digital Twin, while enabling a human-centric approach toward an end-to-end security solution. Two canonical workflows along with two illustrative application scenarios are proposed, Light Rail Transit and Extended Reality, to conceptually highlight the proposed architecture impact and its expected benefits when high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and secure communications are required.

The evolution towards sixth-generation (6G) networks requires new architecture enhancements to support the broad device ecosystem, comprising users, machines, autonomous vehicles, and Internet-of-things devices. Moreover, high heterogeneity in the desired quality-of-service (QoS) is expected, as 6G networks will offer extremely low-latency and high-throughput services and error-free communication. This complex environment raises significant challenges in resource management while adhering to security and privacy constraints due to the plethora of data generation endpoints. Considering the advances in AI/ML-aided integration in wireless networks and recent efforts on the network data analytics function (NWDAF) by the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP), this work presents an AI/ML-aided distributed trustable engine (DTE), collecting data from diverse sources of the 6G infrastructure and deploying ML methods for anomaly detection against diverse threat types. Moreover, we present the DTE architecture and its components, providing data management, AI/ML model training, and classification capabilities for anomaly detection. To promote privacy-aware networking, a federated learning (FL) framework to extend the DTE is discussed. Then, the anomaly detection capabilities of the AI/ML-aided DTE are presented in detail, together with the ML model training process, which considers various ML models. For this purpose, we use two open datasets representing attack scenarios in the core and the edge parts of the network. Experimental results, including an ensemble learning method and different supervised learning alternatives, show that the AI/ML-aided DTE can efficiently train ML models with reduced dimensionality and deploy them in diverse cybersecurity scenarios to improve anomaly detection in 6G networks.
