The rapid growth in the number of interconnected devices on the Internet (referred to as the Internet of Things—IoT), along with the huge volume of data that are exchanged and processed, has created a new landscape in network design and operation. Due to the limited battery size and computational capabilities of IoT nodes, data processing usually takes place on external devices. Since latency minimization is a key concept in modern-era networks, edge servers that are in close proximity to IoT nodes gather and process related data, while in some cases data offloading in the cloud might have to take place. The interconnection of a vast number of heterogeneous IoT devices with the edge servers and the cloud, where the IoT, edge, and cloud converge to form a computing continuum, is also known as the IoT-edge-cloud (IEC) continuum. Several key challenges are associated with this new computing systems’ architectural approach, including (i) the design of connection and programming protocols aimed at properly manipulating a huge number of heterogeneous devices over diverse infrastructures; (ii) the design of efficient task offloading algorithms aimed at optimizing services execution; (iii) the support for security and privacy enhancements during data transfer to deal with the existent and even unforeseen attacks and threats landscape; (iv) scalability, flexibility, and reliability guarantees to face the expected mobility for IoT systems; and (v) the design of optimal resource allocation mechanisms to make the most out of the available resources. These challenges will become even more significant towards the new era of sixth-generation (6G) networks, which will be based on the integration of various cutting-edge heterogeneous technologies. Therefore, the goal of this survey paper is to present all recent developments in the field of IEC continuum systems, with respect to the aforementioned deployment challenges. In the same context, potential limitations and future challenges are highlighted as well. Finally, indicative use cases are also presented from an IEC continuum perspective.

Driven by the emerging trend for transparent, open and programmable communications, Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) constitutes the dominant architectural approach for deploying the future wireless networks. Towards standardizing and specifying the building blocks and principles of O-RAN, a coordinated global effort has been observed, mainly comprised of the O-RAN Alliance, the operators and several research activities. This paper presents the architectural aspects and the current status of O-RAN deployments, integrating both existing and ongoing activities from the O-RAN enablers. Furthermore, since the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) act as key pillars for realizing O-RANs, a comprehensive view on the AI/ML functionality is provided as well. Additionally, a Network Telemetry (NT) architecture is also proposed to ensure end-to-end data collection and real-time analytics. To concretely illustrate the O-RAN supporting mechanisms for hosting AI/ML, we implemented two realistic ML algorithms: (i) a Supervised Learning (SL) based algorithm for cell traffic prediction using the training data of an open dataset and (ii) a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) based algorithm for energy-efficiency maximization using a 5G-compliant simulator to obtain RAN measurements. We schematically demonstrate the AI/ML workflow for both ML-assisted algorithms through the usage of xApps running on the Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC), as well as we outline the role of the O-RAN components involved in the AI/ML loop. Combining the high-level architectural descriptions with a detailed presentation of ML-empowered resource allocation schemes, the paper discusses and summarizes the O-RAN disaggregation principles and the role of AI/ML embedded in future O-RAN deployments.

Energy efficiency (EE) constitutes a key target in the deployment of 5G networks, especially due to the increased densification and heterogeneity. In this paper, a Deep Q-Network (DQN) based power control scheme is proposed for improving the system-level EE of two-tier 5G heterogeneous and multi-channel cells. The algorithm aims to maximize the EE of the system by regulating the transmission power of the downlink channels and reconfiguring the user association scheme. To efficiently solve the EE problem, a DQN-based method is established, properly modified to ensure adequate QoS of each user (via defining a demand-driven rewarding system) and near-optimal power adjustment in each transmission link. To directly compare different DQN-based approaches, a centralized (C-DQN), a multi-agent (MA-DQN) and a transfer learning-based (T-DQN) method are deployed to address whether their applicability is beneficial in the 5G HetNets. Results confirmed that DQN-assisted actions could offer enhanced network-wide EE performance, as they balance the trade-off between the power consumption and achieved throughput (in Mbps/Watt). Excessive performance was observed for the MA-DQN approach (>5 Mbps/Watt), since the decentralized learning supports low-dimensional agents to be coordinated with each other through global rewards. In further comparing the T-DQN against MA-DQN solutions, T-DQN presents beneficial usage for very low or very high inter-cell distances, whereas the usage of MA-DQN is preferred (by a factor of ~1.3) for intermediate inter-cell distances (100-600m), where the power savings are feasible towards achieving increased EE. Furthermore, T-DQN scheme guarantees good EE solutions (above 2 Mbps/Watt), even for densely-deployed macro-cells, with effortless training and memory requirements. On the contrary, MA-DQN offers the best EE solutions at the expense of massive training resources and required training time.

The maritime industry has a significant influence on the global economy, underscoring the need for operational availability and safety through effective maintenance practices. Predictive maintenance emerges as a promising solution compared to conventional maintenance schemes currently employed by the industry, offering proactive failure predictions, reduced downtime events, and extended machinery lifespan. This paper addresses a critical gap in the existing literature by providing a comprehensive overview of the main data-driven PdM systems. Specifically, the review explores common issues found in vessel components (i.e., propulsion, auxiliary, electric, hull), examining how different state-of-the-art PdM architectures, ranging from basic machine learning models to advanced deep learning techniques aim to address them. Additionally, the concepts of centralized machine learning, federated, and transfer learning are also discussed, demonstrating their potential to enhance PdM systems as well as their limitations. Finally, the current challenges hindering adoption are discussed, together with the future directions to advance implementation in the field.

Humans make eye-contact to extract information about other people’s mental states, recruiting dedicated brain networks that process information about the self and others. Recent studies show that eye-contact increases the synchronization between two brains but do not consider its effects on activity within single brains. Here we investigate how eye-contact affects the frequency and direction of the synchronization within and between two brains and the corresponding network characteristics. We also evaluate the functional relevance of eye-contact networks by comparing inter- and intra-brain networks of friends vs. strangers and the direction of synchronization between leaders and followers. We show that eye-contact increases higher inter- and intra-brain synchronization in the gamma frequency band. Network analysis reveals that some brain areas serve as hubs linking within- and between-brain networks. During eye-contact, friends show higher inter-brain synchronization than strangers. Dyads with clear leader/follower roles demonstrate higher synchronization from leader to follower in the alpha frequency band. Importantly, eye-contact affects synchronization between brains more than within brains, demonstrating that eye-contact is an inherently social signal. Future work should elucidate the causal mechanisms behind eye-contact induced synchronization.

The provision of high data rate services to mobile users combined with improved quality of experience (i.e., zero latency multimedia content) drives technological evolution towards the design and implementation of fifth generation (5G) broadband wireless networks. To this end, a dynamic network design approach is adopted whereby network topology is configured according to service demands. In parallel, many private companies are interested in developing their own 5G networks, also referred to as non-public networks (NPNs), since this deployment is expected to leverage holistic production monitoring and support critical applications. In this context, this paper introduces a 5G NPN architectural approach, supporting among others various key enabling technologies, such as cell densification, disaggregated RAN with open interfaces, edge computing, and AI/ML-based network optimization. In the same framework, potential applications of our proposed approach in real world scenarios (e.g., support of mission critical services and computer vision analytics for emergencies) are described. Finally, scalability issues are also highlighted since a deployment framework of our architectural design in an additional real-world scenario related to Industry 4.0 (smart manufacturing) is also analyzed.
