To improve the accuracy of atmospheric visibility (V) prediction based on machine learning in different pollution scenarios, a new atmospheric visibility prediction method based on the stacking fusion model (VSFM) is established in this paper. The new method uses the stacking strategy to fuse two base learners—eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM)—to optimize prediction accuracy. Furthermore, seasonal feature importance evaluations and feature selection were utilized to optimize prediction accuracy in different seasons with different pollution sources. The new VSFM was applied to 1-year environmental and meteorological data measured in Qingdao, China. Compared to other traditional non-stacking models, the new VSFM improved precision during different seasons, especially in extremely low-visibility scenarios (V< 2 km). The TS score of the VSFM was significantly better than that of other models. For extremely low-visibility scenarios, the VSFM had a threat score (TS) of 0.5, while the best performance of other models was less than 0.27. The new method is promising for atmospheric visibility prediction under complex urban pollution conditions. The research results can also improve our understanding of the factors that influence urban visibility.

The aerosol hygroscopic growth (HG) characteristics in coastal areas are very complex, which is one of the main influences on the simulation accuracy of radiation transfer modeling for coastal environments. Previous studies have shown that aerosol HG characteristics are very different in open oceans and inland regions. However, the aerosol HG features in coastal areas are strongly affected by its type. In this work, an aerosol backward trajectory tracing model was used to classify the local aerosol type. Using long-term field campaign data in Qingdao (25 September 2019 to 25 October 2020), the HG characteristics of different types of aerosols (i.e., land source, sea source, and mixed aerosol) under different seasons and different atmospheric environments (i.e., pollution background and clean background) were studied. Quantitative models of aerosol HG factor were established for aerosols from different sources in different seasons and under different pollution background conditions. The major type of local aerosol is terrestrial aerosol, as the marine source only accounts for 10–20%. Seasonal HG characteristics (deliquescence point, DP) of mixed and land source aerosol vary significantly, from around RH = 60% to RH = 85%, while that of the marine aerosol is rather consistent (RH = 80%). When the atmospheric background is relatively clean, the DPs of aerosols from different sources are almost the same (about RH = 80%), but when the pollution is heavy, the DPs of terrestrial aerosols are almost 20% lower than those of marine sources. These models can be directly used to characterize the hygroscopic characteristics of atmospheric aerosols in Qingdao at specific seasons or pollution levels for radiative transfer modeling, remote sensing, and so forth.

In this study, we devised a constraint method, called multi-model ensemble pattern (MEP), to estimate the refractive index structure parameter (Cn2) profiles based on observational data and multiple existing models. We verified this approach against radiosonde data from field campaigns in China’s eastern and northern coastal areas. Multi-dimensional statistical evaluations for the Cn2 profiles and integrated astronomical parameters have proved MEP’s relatively reliable performance in estimating optical turbulence in the atmosphere. The correlation coefficients of MEP and measurement overall Cn2 in two areas are up to 0.65 and 0.76. A much higher correlation can be found for a single radiosonde profile. Meanwhile, the difference evaluation of integrated astronomical parameters also shows its relatively robust performance compared to a single model. The prowess of this reliable approach allows us to carry out regional investigation on optical turbulence features with routine meteorological data soon.

In order to investigate the equivalent complex refractive index of atmospheric aerosols near the Earth’s surface, we conducted measurements in the Hefei region from March to April 2022. These measurements utilized a micro-pulse lidar, an Aethalometer, and a Portable Optical Particle Profiler. These measurements encompassed aerosol particle size distribution as well as standard meteorological parameters including temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed. Subsequently, this dataset was employed to develop an optimization algorithm for retrieving the equivalent complex refractive indices of near-surface aerosols. The methodology relies on lookup tables containing data for extinction efficiency and absorption efficiency factors. It operates on the premise of aerosol property stability within a defined time frame, utilizing measured extinction and absorption coefficients as simultaneous constraints during this period to inversely derive both the real and imaginary parts of the aerosol complex refractive index. Results from the simulation analysis reveal that the newly optimized retrieval algorithm, which relies on lookup tables, exhibits reduced sensitivity to instrument errors when compared to single-point constraint algorithms. This enhancement results in a more efficient and dependable approach for retrieving the aerosol complex refractive index. Empirical inversion and simulation studies were carried out to determine the aerosol equivalent complex refractive index in the Hefei region, utilizing measured data. This inversion process yielded an average complex refractive index of 1.48-i0.017 for aerosols in the Hefei region throughout the experimental period. Correlation analysis unveiled a positive association between the real part of the aerosol complex refractive index and the single-scattering albedo (SSA), whereas the imaginary part displayed a linear negative correlation with the SSA. The mathematical relationship between the real part and the SSA is y=0.19x+0.62, and the corresponding relationship between the imaginary part and the SSA is y=−5.3x+0.99. This research offers a novel method for the retrieval of the aerosol equivalent complex refractive index.

Analysis of turbulent heat fluxes in urban forests is crucial for understanding structural variations in the urban sub-surface boundary layer. This study used data captured by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and an improved semi-empirical triangle method to estimate small-scale turbulent heat fluxes in the sub-surface of an urban forest. To improve the estimation accuracy, the surface temperature (TS) of the UAV-based remote sensing inversion was corrected using the hot and cold spot correction method, and the process of calculating ϕmax using the traditional semi-empirical triangle method was improved to simplify the calculation process and reduce the number of parameters in the model. Based on this method, latent heat fluxes (LE) and sensible heat fluxes (H) were obtained with a horizontal resolution of 0.13 m at different time points in the study area. A comparison and validation with the measured values of the eddy covariance (EC) system showed that the absolute error of the LE estimates ranged from 4.43 to 23.11 W/m2, the relative error ranged from 4.57% to 25.33%, the correlation coefficient (r) with the measured values was 0.95, and the root mean square error (RMSE) was 35.96 W/m2, while the absolute error of the H estimates ranged from 3.42 to 15.45 W/m2, the relative error ranged from 7.51% to 28.65%, r was 0.91, and RMSE was 9.77 W/m2. Compared to the traditional triangle method, the r of LE was improved by 0.04, while that of H was improved by 0.06, and the improved triangle method was more accurate in estimating the heat fluxes of urban mixed forest ecosystems in the region. Using this method, it was possible to accurately track the LE and H of individual trees at the leaf level.

This study addresses the challenges of low daytime signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and insufficient aerosol layer detection in CALIPSO satellite Lidar data by proposing an improved multi-channel aerosol identification algorithm. The algorithm features an automatic optimal smoothing scale selection, substantially enhancing SNR for both daytime and nighttime observations, with the SNR increased by more than threefold for both day and night. By exploiting the 532 nm polarization channel’s sensitivity to thin dust layer and the 1064 nm channel’s responsiveness to thick absorbing aerosol layer, a multi-channel aerosol mask identification approach is developed. Compared with CALIPSO Level-2 products, the new algorithm identifies more comprehensive aerosol masks, with identification consistency exceeding 95% between day and night. Monthly-mean comparisons show the new algorithm’s aerosol optical depth (AOD) closely matches MODIS Level-2 products (correlation coefficient R = 0.927, RMSE = 0.013), and significantly outperforms CALIPSO Level-2 data. Validation against AERONET observations at the Dongsha and Taiping sites further supports this result, showing correlation coefficients close to 0.9 and RMSE values below 0.05. Together, these findings strongly confirm the reliability of the improved retrieval algorithm. Furthermore, our results quantitatively confirm that the persistent underestimation in CALIPSO Level-2 is primarily attributable to its insufficient detection of dust and, especially, smoke aerosols. Analysis of the 2019-2023 three-dimensional distributions and transport of smoke and dust aerosols over South China Sea (SCS) and surrounding coastal–oceanic region, based on high-quality CALIPSO multi-channel remote sensing, reveals not only the expected seasonal cycles but also several novel features: highly variable winter-spring transport corridors, abrupt spatial and vertical discontinuities in anomalous years, and pronounced modulation of aerosol pathways by extreme events such as ENSO. These high-resolution spatiotemporal insights uncover complex aspects of aerosol transport, providing an advanced scientific basis for regional climate modeling, transboundary air quality management, and global environmental monitoring.
