The need for energy has significantly increased in the world in recent years. Various research works were presented to develop Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) as green energy Distributed Generations (DGs) to satisfy this demand. In addition, alleviating environmental problems caused by utilizing conventional power plants is diminished by these renewable sources. The optimal location and size of the DG-RESs significantly affect the performance of Radial Distribution Systems (RDSs) through the fine bus voltage profile, senior power quality, low power losses, and high efficiency. This paper investigates the use of PV (photovoltaic) and (Wind Turbine) WT systems as a DG source in RDSs. This investigation is presented via the optimal location and size of the PV and WT systems, which are the most used DG sources. This optimization problem aims to maximize system efficiency by minimizing power losses and improving both voltage profile and power quality using White Shark Optimization (WSO). This algorithm emulates the attitude of great white sharks when foraging using their senses of hearing and smell. It confirms the balance between exploration and exploitation to discover optimization that is considered as the main advantage of this approach in attaining the global minimum. To assess the suggested approach, three common RDSs are utilized, namely, IEEE 33, 69, and 85 node systems. The results prove that the applied WSO approach can find the best location and size of the RESs to reduce power loss, ameliorate the voltage profile, and outlast other recent strategies. Adding more units provides a high percentage of reducing losses by at least 93.52% in case of WTs, rather than 52.267% in the case of PVs. Additionally, the annual saving increased to USD 74,371.97, USD 82,127.257, and USD 86,731.16 with PV penetration, while it reached USD 104,872.96, USD 116,136.57, and USD 155,184.893 with WT penetration for the 33, 69, and 85 nodes, respectively. In addition, a considerable enhancement in the voltage profiles with the growth of PV and WT units was confirmed. The ability of the suggested WSO for feasible implementation was validated and inspected by preserving the restrictions and working constraints.

Combined Heat and Power Units Economic Dispatch (CHPUED) is a challenging non-convex optimization challenge in the power system that aims at decreasing the production cost by scheduling the heat and power generation outputs to dedicated units. In this article, a Kepler optimization algorithm (KOA) is designed and employed to handle the CHPUED issue under valve points impacts in large-scale systems. The proposed KOA is used to forecast the position and motion of planets at any given time based on Kepler’s principles of planetary motion. The large 48-unit, 96-unit, and 192-unit systems are considered in this study to manifest the superiority of the developed KOA, which reduces the fuel costs to 116,650.0870 USD/h, 234,285.2584 USD/h, and 487,145.2000 USD/h, respectively. Moreover, the dwarf mongoose optimization algorithm (DMOA), the energy valley optimizer (EVO), gray wolf optimization (GWO), and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are studied in this article in a comparative manner with the KOA when considering the 192-unit test system. For this large-scale system, the presented KOA successfully achieves improvements of 19.43%, 17.49%, 39.19%, and 62.83% compared to the DMOA, the EVO, GWO, and PSO, respectively. Furthermore, a feasibility study is conducted for the 192-unit test system, which demonstrates the superiority and robustness of the proposed KOA in obtaining all operating points between the boundaries without any violations.

Correct modelling and estimation of solar cell characteristics are crucial for effective performance simulations of PV panels, necessitating the development of creative approaches to improve solar energy conversion. When handling this complex problem, traditional optimisation algorithms have significant disadvantages, including a predisposition to get trapped in certain local optima. This paper develops the Mantis Search Algorithm (MSA), which draws inspiration from the unique foraging behaviours and sexual cannibalism of praying mantises. The suggested MSA includes three stages of optimisation: prey pursuit, prey assault, and sexual cannibalism. It is created for the R.TC France PV cell and the Ultra 85-P PV panel related to Shell PowerMax for calculating PV parameters and examining six case studies utilising the one-diode model (1DM), two-diode model (1DM), and three-diode model (3DM). Its performance is assessed in contrast to recently developed optimisers of the neural network optimisation algorithm (NNA), dwarf mongoose optimisation (DMO), and zebra optimisation algorithm (ZOA). In light of the adopted MSA approach, simulation findings improve the electrical characteristics of solar power systems. The developed MSA methodology improves the 1DM, 2DM, and 3DM by 12.4%, 44.05%, and 48.88%, 28.96%, 43.19%, and 55.81%, 37.71%, 32.71%, and 60.13% relative to the DMO, NNA, and ZOA approaches, respectively. For the Ultra 85-P PV panel, the designed MSA technique achieves improvements for the 1DM, 2DM, and 3DM of 62.05%, 67.14%, and 84.25%, 49.05%, 53.57%, and 74.95%, 37.03%, 37.4%, and 59.57% compared to the DMO, NNA, and ZOA techniques, respectively.

A recent optimization algorithm, the Rime Optimization Algorithm (RIME), was developed to efficiently utilize the physical phenomenon of rime-ice growth. It simulates the hard-rime and soft-rime processes, constructing the mechanisms of hard-rime puncture and soft-rime search. In this study, an enhanced version, termed Modified RIME (MRIME), is introduced, integrating a Polynomial Differential Learning Operator (PDLO). The incorporation of PDLO introduces non-linearities to the RIME algorithm, enhancing its adaptability, convergence speed, and global search capability compared to the conventional RIME approach. The proposed MRIME algorithm is designed to identify photovoltaic (PV) module characteristics by considering diverse equivalent circuits, including the One-Diode Model (ONE-DM) and Two-Diode Model TWO-DM, to determine the unspecified parameters of the PV. The MRIME approach is compared to the conventional RIME method using two commercial PV modules, namely the STM6-40/36 module and R.T.C. France cell. The simulation results are juxtaposed with those from contemporary algorithms based on published research. The outcomes related to recent algorithms are also compared with those of the MRIME algorithm in relation to various existing studies. The simulation results indicate that the MRIME algorithm demonstrates substantial improvement rates for the STM6-40/36 module and R.T.C. France cell, achieving 1.16% and 18.45% improvement for the ONE-DM, respectively. For the TWO-DM, it shows significant improvement rates for the two modules, reaching 1.14% and 50.42%, respectively. The MRIME algorithm, in comparison to previously published results, establishes substantial superiority and robustness.

Due to the unpredictability of the majority of green energy sources (GESs), particularly in microgrids (μGs), frequency deviations are unavoidable. These factors include solar irradiance, wind disturbances, and parametric uncertainty, all of which have a substantial impact on the system’s frequency. An adaptive load frequency control (LFC) method for power systems is suggested in this paper to mitigate the aforementioned issues. For engineering challenges, soft computing methods like the bat algorithm (BA), where it proves its effectiveness in different applications, consistently produce positive outcomes, so it is used to address the LFC issue. For online gain tuning, an integral controller using an artificial BA is utilized, and this control method is supported by a modification known as the balloon effect (BE) identifier. Stability and robustness of analysis of the suggested BA+BE scheme is investigated. The system with the proposed adaptive frequency controller is evaluated in the case of step/random load demand. In addition, high penetrations of photovoltaic (PV) sources are considered. The standard integral controller and Jaya+BE, two more optimization techniques, have been compared with the suggested BA+BE strategy. According to the results of the MATLAB simulation, the suggested technique (BA+BE) has a significant advantage over other techniques in terms of maintaining frequency stability in the presence of step/random disturbances and PV source. The suggested method successfully keeps the frequency steady over I and Jaya+BE by 61.5% and 31.25%, respectively. In order to validate the MATLAB simulation results, real-time simulation tests are given utilizing a PC and a QUARC pid_e data acquisition card.

This study presents an enhanced, adaptive, and dynamic surface sliding mode control (SMC), a cutting-edge method for improving grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system performance. The suggested control approach uses dynamic SMC and adaptive approaches to enhance the robustness and efficiency of a system. Proportional–integral (PI) and SMC, two control systems for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in PV systems, are compared in this paper. This study finds that the SMC system is a more effective and efficient MPPT approach for PV systems compared to the conventional PI control system. The SMC system’s unique feature is the capacity to stabilize grid voltage and attain a modulation index of less than one. An important component of power electronic system control is the index, which acts as a parameter representing the relationship between the output signal’s amplitude and the reference signal’s amplitude. The SMC method demonstrates improved robustness, efficiency, and stability, especially in dynamic operating settings with load and solar radiation changes. Compared to the PI control, the SMC exhibits a noteworthy 75% reduction in voltage fluctuations and an improvement in the power output of 5% to 10%. Regarding output power optimization, voltage stability, and accurate current tracking, the SMC system performs better than the PI control system. Furthermore, the SMC technique maintains a modulation index below one and guarantees grid voltage stability, both of which are essential for the efficiency and stability of power electrical systems.
