A workshop on power system harmonics was organized in Stockholm in January 2014. On the agenda was among others a discussion on what are the main issues on harmonics at the moment and in the near future. Some of the issues discussed at that workshop are presented in this paper and its companion paper. In this paper the following issues will be addressed: the appearance of emission at higher frequencies (supraharmonics); the need for new and improved standards; measurement issues and data analysis.

This paper focuses on the integration of Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) devices in wireless sensor networks. Since different manufacturers usually deal with one aspect of building automation - e.g. heating ventilation and air conditioning, lighting control, different kinds of alarms, etc. - final building automation system has different subsystems which are finally taken to an integrated building management system. The cost of this process is consequently increased due to additional hardware investment. Our main purpose is to provide the end consumer with an economical fully centralized system in which home appliances are managed by an IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless sensor network. Not only is it necessary to focus on the initial investment, but maintenance and energy consumption costs must also be considered. This paper explains the developed system along with a brief introduction to usual building automation protocols. Finally it presents future work in this field.

High-pressure sodium lamps are currently the main lamps used in public lighting. However, the possibility of using high-power light emitting diode (LEDs) for street lighting is growing continuously due to their greater energy efficiency, robustness, long life and light control. The aim of this paper is to study the power quality of high-power lighting networks based on LED and high-pressure sodium lamps. Both electromagnetic and dimmable electronic ballasts, which can dim the lamp output smoothly and uniformly, have been used connected to high-pressure sodium lamps. High-pressure sodium lamps connected to electronic equipment have been tested with different arc power levels using dimming on a 230 V power supply. The study presented in this paper is completely based on measurements, including harmonic currents in the frequency range up to 150 kHz for all the technologies. The main results show a broadband spectrum in LED lamps which confirms other research in fluorescent lamps powered by high-frequency ballasts. Results also indicate a decrease in the harmonic value with increasing harmonic order, and a decrease in the harmonic value at half load (60%) compared with full load (100%). Although total harmonic distortion of the current is lower with high-pressure sodium lamps connected to electronic rather than electromagnetic ballasts, LED lamps achieved the lowest total harmonic distortion of current.

This paper summarizes the state of part of the discussions in CIGRE/CIRED/IEEE joined working group C4.24, especially where it concerns supraharmonics. There is an increasing interest from the international smart grid standard-setting community in knowledge about harmonics distortion in the frequency range 2 to 150 kHz, referred to as supraharmonics. The paper presents measurements of waveform distortion from several illustrative installations and loads. The reduction of emission in the lower-frequency ranges appears to result in an increase in supraharmonic emission by equipment. Power electronics has emerged as a ubiquitous technology, which plays a critical role in almost any areas. Power electronics converter is an important source of waveform distortion, but, as stated in this paper, power electronics can also be the key to mitigate distortion, when the proper technology is employed.

Augmented reality (AR) improves how we acquire, understand, and display information without distracting us from the real world. These technologies can be used in different applications and industries as they can incorporate domain-specific visualizations on a real-world screen. Mobile augmented reality (MAR) essentially consists of superimposing virtual elements over real objects on the screen, to give added value and enrich the interaction with reality. In numerous plants, it is being used for maintenance and repair tasks, as well as training. The Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly pervading every aspect of our lives, including the power infrastructure of our buildings. IoT-enabled devices offer many connectivity options for helping supervise all-important energy assets. Aggregating data to cloud-based platforms enables operations teams to have on-time information access to make fast decisions and have a fast response regarding energy use, while maintenance teams keep on top of the appliance power quality and reliability needed by using MAR. This paper presents a novel approximation for visualizing appliance-related power quality to enhance awareness about the consumed electricity. A combined solution of MAR with IoT technologies is employed. Engineered solutions’ hands-free way to get data about surrounding appliances reduces the complexity, saves energy, and speeds up the operations. An innovative way to measure things at the right time leads to a competitive advantage.
