Due to the depletion of hydrocarbon resources worldwide, intensive research is being conducted to identify alternative energy carriers. Hydrogen has emerged as a promising candidate due to its high energy density and environmentally friendly nature. However, large-scale implementation of hydrogen energy is hindered by the lack of safe, efficient, and cost-effective storage methods. Among the various materials studied for solid-state hydrogen storage, boron nitride (BN)-based compounds have attracted significant attention owing to their high thermal stability, tunable morphology, and potential for physisorption-based storage. This review focuses on recent advances in the synthesis, functionalization, and structural optimization of BN-based materials, including nanotubes, nanosheets, porous frameworks, and chemically modified BN. Although other boron-containing hydrides such as LiBH4, Mg(BH4)2, and closo-borates are briefly mentioned for comparison, the primary emphasis is placed on BN-related systems. This paper discusses various modification strategies aimed at enhancing hydrogen uptake and reversibility, offering insights into the future potential of BN-based materials in hydrogen storage technologies.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is often used to improve the physical and mechanical properties of valve metals. This method allows for the formation of thicker and denser metal oxide coatings, which helps to improve physical and mechanical properties, especially the wear and corrosion resistance of the surface. The PEO process is widely used in areas such as mechanical engineering, aerospace, biomedical, and others. This review aims to summarize and explain the fundamental principles of the PEO process, with a focus on the influence of waveform types and their parameters on the properties of PEO coatings. This study found that a sinusoidal waveform promotes the generation of more stable discharges compared to a rectangular waveform, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance of the coatings. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that using a rectangular waveform with adjustable parameters enables the production of thicker and more wear-resistant coatings. Meanwhile, the application of sawtooth and trapezoidal waveforms reduces sharp current spikes during the onset of discharges, minimizing defect formation and positively influencing the coating formation process. In addition, bipolar and unipolar modes are analyzed, and the promising future directions are discussed.

This study investigates the microplasma deposition of molten tantalum (Ta) onto a rotating Grade 5 Ti Extra-Low Interstitial (ELI) alloy, producing multilayer film coatings with a porous microstructure. Optimal parameters for microplasma spraying Ta were experimentally determined to improve the surface properties of elbow joint implants. The physical and mechanical properties of the Grade 5 Ti ELI substrate and the Ta-based coating were analyzed. Moreover, mathematical modeling was utilized to determine the optimal parameters for the plasma coating process, including key factors such as spray distance, current, and rotational speed, which were systematically applied across three experimental series. A Ta coating thickness of 250 μm was achieved at 35 A current, 410 mm spray distance, and 7 rpm rotation speed under optimized deposition conditions. The results showed a microhardness increase on the Ta-coated surface, peaking above HV1000 with an average of HV742, while the Ti substrate averaged HV325. Additionally, the XRD patterns revealed the presence of metallic Ta alongside Ta oxides, such as Ta2O and Ta2O5, in the Ta coatings.

This research aims to optimizing the synthesis of Ni–Ti–Cu alloys with shape memory effect (SME) through a combination of mechanosynthesis and spark plasma sintering (SPS). It has been established that the rotation speed (650/750 rpm) and the duration of mechanosynthesis (1–8 h) critically affect the phase composition and morphology of the powders. The speed of the formation of the intermetallic phase NiTi is limited at 650 rpm, whereas it intensifies defect accumulation and amorphization at 750 rpm. X-ray phase analysis and scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the optimal mechanosynthesis regime (8 h, 750 rpm) ensures: synthesis of target phases B2-NiTi and B19 ′ -NiTi; minimal crystallite size ( ∼ 109 Å); high chemical homogeneity ( ∼ 46 at% Ni, ∼ 42 at% Ti, ∼ 10 at% Cu). Subsequent SPS at 850–900 ° C and 49.2 MPa allowed for the production of dense samples. Sintering at 90 0 ° C after mechanosynthesis at 750 rpm ensured the predominance of the stable B2 austenitic phase, high microstructural homogeneity, and minimal porosity, which is critical for the reversibility of martensitic transformations. EDS analysis confirmed the chemical homogeneity ( ∼ 46 at% Ni, ∼ 42 at% Ti, ∼ 10 at% Cu) and the uniform distribution of elements. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of combining mechanosynthesis at an increased rotation speed and reduced duration with SPS for the formation of microstructures optimized for the requirements of shape memory alloy (SMA) materials.

Kazakhstan holds the global leadership position in natural uranium mining. Nonetheless, the extraction and processing of radioactive ores has the potential to induce instances of radiological contamination. This study aimed to evaluate the radiological soil contamination at a former monazite, tin, and radioactive ore processing facility located in Ust-Kamenogorsk city. Pedestrian gamma–ray measurements revealed dose rates up to 1.00 µSv/h, significantly exceeding the natural background (0.16–0.18 µSv/h). The analysis of the 28 soil profiles demonstrated that deeper soil layers (below 60 cm) were significantly contaminated with radionuclides constituting production waste. Furthermore, the total activity in the superficial soil layer is in the range of 583–5275 Bq/kg (alpha emitters) and 641–1749 Bq/kg (beta radionuclides). The maximum of total radioactivity in the samples collected at the 80–100 cm layer was at the level of 22,482 Bq/kg (α-emitters) and 6845 Bq/kg for gross beta radiation. In consideration of the site’s proximity to public buildings, the calculated radiological hazard indices were calculated, revealing the potential danger for human health. The elevated excess lifetime cancer risk and annual gonadal dose equivalent obtained for the topsoil layer indicate a high level of radiological risk to the local population. The obtained results emphasise the necessity of developing rehabilitation strategies and long-term monitoring of the contaminated site, which is consistent with the global objectives of sustainable development in the field of environmental protection and public health.

This paper presents a combined approach to the synthesis of WC-(Fe, Ni) hard alloys obtained by mechanical activation and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The main attention at this stage of the work is paid to studying the evolution of the morphology and phase composition of WC-(Fe, Ni) powder mixtures during high-energy milling and their subsequent sintering by the SPS method. The study analyzed the effect of the mechanosynthesis time and the binder phase content on the change in the average particle size, the degree of defect formation, and the phase composition of the powders. It was found that an increase in the milling time to 240 min promotes the formation of the WC nanocrystalline structure and the accumulation of microdefects, which is accompanied by a decrease in the average particle size and an increase in the dislocation density. The X-ray phase analysis of the samples after SPS confirmed the preservation of the WC phase and the formation of the γ-(Fe, Ni) matrix without the formation of secondary carbide phases. The analysis of sample shrinkage showed three main stages: initial compaction, intense shrinkage, and structure stabilization. The obtained data demonstrate that optimization of the parameters of mechanical activation and SPS allow for effective control of the phase composition and morphology of WC-(Fe, Ni) powders, which opens up opportunities for their subsequent study in conditions of aggressive environments and radiation exposure.
