In this paper we present results from the study of optical signal amplification using Raman assisted fiber optical parametric amplifier with considerable benefits for S-band telecommunication systems where the use of widely used erbium-doped fiber amplifier is limited. We have created detailed models and performed computer simulations of combined Raman and fiber optical parametric amplification in a 16-channel 40 Gbps/channel wavelength division multiplexed transmission system. Achieved gain bandwidth, as well as transmission system parameters—signal-to-noise ratio and bit-error-ratio—were analyzed by comparing the Raman assisted fiber optical parametric amplifier to the single pump fiber optical parametric amplifier. Results show that the 3 dB gain bandwidth in the case of combined amplification is up to 0.2 THz wider with 1.9 dB difference between the lowest and highest gain.

In present research, Aeff parameter measurements for ytterbium (Yb3+) and erbium (Er3+) doped optical fibers were performed experimentally by the usage of transverse shift measurement method. All the measurements were done at two different wavelengths (1310nm and 1550nm accordingly) at various power levels with an aim to evaluate how effective area depends on those parameters. With the increase of a step size the higher peak of power values for Erbium fiber are distributed in range of −30dBm while for Ytterbium doped fibers around −20 dBm. Obtained results have been analyzed and compared with an aim to estimate the characteristics for both doped fiber types.

The present paper proposes high speed dense 8-channel bidirectional WDM-PON access system where spectrally-uniform ASE source is shared among multiple users for realization of downstream transmission. Upstream transmission is realized by using conventional laser based solution. Proposed system is based on ITU-T DWDM grid and operating at 10 Gbit/s per channel symmetrically on both directions. It is demonstrated that implemented spectrum slicing technology is capable to provide downstream data transmission over 20 km SMF fiber span with BER<;10-12 by using additional fiber Bragg grating chromatic dispersion compensation module and excess intensity noise reduction by additional semiconductor optical amplifier.

The main goal of this paper is to investigate the ability of a single-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier with linearly polarized pumping radiation to provide binary polarization shift keying to intensity on-off keying modulation format conversion in a single channel optical transmission system. The amplifier produced up to 14.8 dB of on-off gain, and it was demonstrated that such level of amplification is sufficient to provide modulation format conversion, while maintaining acceptable quality of the converted signal. It was found that due to fiber birefringence the original state of polarization needs to be recovered at the input of the amplifier, otherwise, drop in amplification and converted signal discrepancies will occur.

The interest of implementation of advanced modulation formats in metro and access networks has experienced a steady increase under the influence of exponentially increasing data amount from multimedia services like videoconferencing, high definition television, video on demand, interactive games and others. The transition period to advanced modulation formats requires a solution for efficient all-optical modulation format conversion to avoid replacement of the existing end-user hardware with the more expensive and complex devices capable of processing of advanced modulation formats. In this paper the authors have investigated the opportunity of all-optical modulation format conversion from binary polarization shift keying to intensity on-off keying in optical metro and access network using a single-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier. This preamplifier ensures up to 30 dB of gain and provides efficient modulation format conversion in the access network. Such additional functionality of single-pump parametric amplifiers in optical access networks has not been demonstrated so far.

The authors have investigated the impact of self-phase modulation (SPM) induced distortions to optical signal transmission over proposed configuration of spectrally efficient wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) fiber-optic transmission system (FOTS). In chosen model of ultra-dense mixed-WDM system optical signals are transmitted with two different per channel bitrates (i.e., 10 and 40 Gbit/s) and three different optical signal modulation formats are used for the encoding of transmitted data (i.e., non-return to zero encoded on-off keying or NRZ-OOK, orthogonal polarization shift keying or 2-POLSK and NRZ encoded differential phase shift keying or NRZ-DPSK). In addition, “non ITU-T” defined minimum and equal frequency intervals are used for the channels separation. This research revealed that 2-POLSK modulated signals are more susceptible to the impact of SPM in such ultra-dense mixed transmission mode than e.g., NRZ-DPSK signals.

Increasing data rates in the fiber optics transmission systems leads to more new limiting factors which complicates the signal transmission. One of such factors is the optical fiber birefringence induced polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Although PMD value in typical standard single mode fiber is quite low (less than 0.2 ps/âkm for ITU-T G.652D standard fiber) higher data rates sets higher requirements for signal quality. In this research comparison between three different modulation formats (traditional on-off keying, differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and polarization shift keying (PolSK)) is given at different optical fiber PMD levels and data transmission rates. It is found that most significant impact of PMD is to traditional on-off keying modulation format, but the best performance showed DPSK modulated signals.

In this paper the authors have investigated the performance improvement in long reach optical access system with hybrid optical amplifiers. The apparent options of optical amplification in wavelength division multiplexing systems include the distributed Raman amplifiers, erbium doped fiber amplifiers, and semiconductor optical amplifiers. In our case distributed Raman amplifier is located at the mid-span reach extender which allows for remote amplification in passive network nodes by distributing a Raman pump together with the data signals. In the case of only distributed Raman amplifier in long reach optical access system wavelength division multiplexing exploitation is inefficient. Combining the advantages of different amplifiers allows fast gain dynamics, simultaneous large bandwidth amplification, and the ability to provide gain at any wavelength. Degradation of optical signal quality is evaluated in 10 Gbit/s long reach wavelength division multiplexing optical access system with hybrid distributed Raman-erbium doped fiber amplifier and distributed Raman-semiconductor optical amplifier.

Optical amplifier usage in the fiber optics transamission systems significantly improves the transmission distance. But it also influence the signal quality. This article describes a study on optical intensity characteristics and its impact to optical signal propagation in the erbium doped fiber (EDF) used in the doped fiber amplifiers. First of all the far field optical power distribution measurements are performed at the output of Er 3+ doped fiber using transverse shift measurement method. Based on the experimental results, the fiber effective area Aeff has been calculated. Following from the effective area results comparative analysis and estimation of the optical intensity results is given for EDF at different wavelengths. It was found that in the wavelength range of 1465-1575nm optical intensity changes from 66.94kW/cm 2 at λ=1575nm to 70.18kW/cm 2 at λ=1470nm. But the nonlinear refractive index change in the erbium doped amplifier amplification range is found to be 1.04 times.

This paper gives results of research about interaction between external electromagnetic field and optical signal transmission in fiber optics transmission systems (FOTS). At first short explanation is given about physical reasons of electric and magnetic field interaction with optical media. This include electro-optic Kerr effect and Faraday effect explanation. Afterwards follows description about research method and achieved results. This research is based on calculations performed by RSoft simulation software OptSim 5.2 to evaluate FOTS performance at external EM field. Results show that in the case of electric field influence BER decreases from 2.13∙10-14 to 6.66∙10-12 for amplitude modulation using NRZ code and from 7.58∙10-28 to 1.64∙10-24 for POLSK modulation. Magnetic field influence simulation showed BER decrease from 1.81∙10-16 to 1.16∙10-14 for amplitude modulation using NRZ code and from 3.70∙10-27 to 7.46∙10-24 for POLSK modulation. Methods for Estimation of Optical Fiber Non-Linearity Using Self-Phase Modulation Effect Due to ever increasing channel density in WDM systems the nonlinear optical effects in fibers become a limiting factor for the high-speed data transmission, which necessitates determination of such important characteristic as the coefficient of optical nonlinearity. To measure it, two methods are proposed: continuous wave self-phase modulation (CW-SPM) and pulse phase self-modulation (P-SPM). The research work has been carried out both in the form of calculations and experimentally, taking as wavelength the central one from the third optical transparency window, λ = 1550 nm. Based on the OptSim 5.2 simulations and experimental results, the sought-for nonlinear coefficients have been calculated. In the paper, comparative analysis and estimation of the results are performed for two different optical fibers.

The minimum average optical signal power, Pmin., in optical communications is limited by the photodetector quantum efficiency and by noise. In this paper, the effect of thermal photons irradiated by all materials at absolute temperatures T>0 on optical information detection in communication lines is quantitatively considered. Usually, only the thermal current fluctuations in the photodetector are taken into account. Basing on the negentropy principle of information, assuming the Planck's blackbody radiation spectral distribution of photons, and describing the optical communication channel as non-symmetric noisy binary channel we have calculated the minimum energy required for the detection of one bit of information, ε= 6.5kT/bit, k =1.38×10-23 J/K being the Boltzmann constant. This ε value corresponds to the large error probability q = 0.20. At T = 20°C ε=4.05×10-21 J/bit and for the bit rate of R = 1010 bits/s one finds Pmin = Rε2.63×10-7 mW. In the case of more realistic value of q =10-9 ε=26kT/bit=1.05×10-19 J/bit, Pmin = 1.05×10-6 mW. This is only about 10 times lower than the quantum photodetection limit of conventional photodetectors. For more sensitive photodetectors the thermal photon noise can become important. It is shown that the minimum signal energy estimate ε≈10-19 J/bit is applicable also in a wider error probability range of q =10-3-10-15.

The transmission light intensity dependences of different silica glass fibres have been experimentally studied when nanosecond pulse trains were incident. A pronounced 13-42% transmission increase was found in contrast to the picosecond pulse irradiation when a monotonic transmission decrease took place. The photoinduced transmission increase is explained in terms of photothermally increased numerical aperture, the photothermal lens effect, and the photoinduced saturation of a weak impurity absorption. The obtained results can be applied in high power applications of fibres such as WDM fibre communication systems.
