This paper proposes a novel pulse width modulation (PWM) for a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source inverter (VSI). When the conventional PWM method is used in three-level NPC VSI, dead time is required to prevent a short circuit caused by the operation of complementary devices on the upper and lower arms. However, current distortion is increased because of the dead time and it can also cause a voltage unbalance in the dc-link. To solve this problem, we propose a zero dead-time width modulation (ZDPWM) which does not require dead time used in complementary operation. The proposed technique applies the offset voltage to the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) reference voltage for the same modulation index (MI) as the conventional SVPWM, but any complementary switching operation needs dead time. In addition, the proposed method is divided into four operation sections using the reference voltage and phase current to operate switching devices which flow the current depending on the section. This ZDPWM method is simply implemented by carrier and reference voltage that reduce the current distortion, because complementary operation that needs dead time is not implemented. However, the operation section is delayed due to the sampling delay that occurs during the experiment. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct a modeling of sampling delay to improve the delay of operation section. To verify the principle and feasibility of the proposed ZDPWM method, a simulation and experiment are implemented.

This paper proposes a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) table-based torque control method considering a variable DC-link voltage that can be used in a low cost DSP. The current reference generation based on two-dimensional look-up table (2D-LUT) is widely used for PMSM drives used in industrial applications because of its torque control performance and operation stability. In general, a 2D-LUT is established based on the flux and torque to overcome the variation in DC-link voltage. However, this method requires a flux estimator for estimating the instantaneous flux, which is defined as a division of the operating speed used to obtain the flux data. Therefore, to obtain the operating flux, a variable division calculation or complex controller is used, which can be difficult to process through a low cost digital signal processor. In this paper, a novel look-up table-based control method that uses the newly established speed-torque 2D-LUT is proposed. This 2D-LUT inherently implements data on the d-/q-axis currents throughout the operating regions, not only the speed and torque, but also the DC-link voltage variation. The proposed method was verified through an experiment on the torque control a variation in the DC-link voltage.

This paper illustrates regenerative battery charging control method of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive without DC/DC converter. Conventional control methods for battery current and voltage control methods generally use a bidirectional DC/DC converter for regenerative control. The reason to use this DC/DC converter is the DC-Link current ripple of the inverter of is affected by switching of the inverter and the motor speed. This problem causes to use a low pass filter (LPF) for sensing the DC-link current, however, it occurs deteriorating the control performance. In this paper, battery current and voltage control methods using only the motor drive are illustrated. To control the DC-link current, power control is performed using the look-up table (LUT) data that are extracted from the experiment. In addition, an applicable method for the variable DC-link voltage of the proposed regenerative control method is illustrated.

This study proposes a field weakening control method with interpolation error compensation of the look-up table based permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) method. The look-up table (LUT) based control method has robust control characteristics compared to other control methods that use linear controllers for current reference generation. However, it is impossible to store all current references under all circumstances for torque commands. General LUT based control methods use two input parameters. In order to mitigate the effect of discretely stored data, two-dimensional interpolation is used to linearly interpolate values between discontinuous data. However, because the current trajectories of PMSMs are generally ellipsoidal, an error occurs between the linearly interpolated and controllable current references. This study proposes a method to compensate for this interpolation error using a feedforward controller for rapid compensation. The improvement using the proposed method is verified by experiment and simulation.

In this paper, a voltage drop compensation method for hybrid hydrogen fuel cell battery system, with a hydrogen recirculation powering a forklift, is studied. During recirculating hydrogen fuel to recycle hydrogen that has not reacted enough at the system, impurities can be mixed with the hydrogen fuel. This leads to low hydrogen concentration and a drop in the output voltage of the fuel cell system. In excessive voltage drop, the fuel cell system can be shutdown. This paper proposes a voltage drop compensation method using an electrical control algorithm to prevent system shutdown by reducing voltage drop. Technically, voltage drop is typically caused by three kinds of factors: (1) The amount of pure hydrogen supply; (2) the temperature of fuel cell stacks; and (3) the current density to catalysts of the fuel cell. The proposed compensation method detects voltage drop caused by those factors, and generates compensation signals for a controller of a DC–DC converter connecting to the output of the fuel cell stack; thus, the voltage drop is reduced by decreasing output current. At the time, insufficient output current to a load is supplied from the batteries. In this paper, voltage drop caused by the abovementioned three factors is analyzed, and the operating principle of the proposed compensation method is specified. To verify this operation and the feasibility of the proposed method, experiments are conducted by applying it to a 10 kW hybrid fuel cell battery system for a forklift.

This paper proposes a position control method for a low-cost exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve system for automotive applications. Generally, position control systems used in automotive applications have many restrictions, such as cost and space. The mechanical structure of the actuator causes high friction and large differences between static friction and coulomb friction. When this large friction difference occurs, the position control vibrates when the controller uses a conventional linear controller such as the P or PI controller. In this paper, we introduce an inexpensive position control method that can be applied under the high-difference-friction mechanical systems. The proposed method is verified through the use of experiments by comparing it with the results obtained when using a conventional control system.

In a DC distribution system configured by AC/DC power conversion system (PCS), the voltage control performance of the AC/DC PCS determines the stability and reliability of the DC distribution grid. The DC voltage of grid is maintained by capacitor, thus transient voltage is an inevitable problem when a grid is connected with a high amount of load or renewable energy. Space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is well known as a stable modulation method and is used in AC/DC PCS and many types of topologies, but a solution for the transient states issue of DC link has not clearly been studied. In this paper, a feedforward compensation method based on the mathematical model of SVPWM is proposed to solve the transient state problem in a DC distribution system. The proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment. AC/DC PCS with the proposed feedforward compensation method has more robust DC voltage control characteristics.

This paper proposes paralleled structure of LDC for an electrical vehicle, unlike conventional integral structure, paralleled structure of LDC controls each module of battery independently to solve the temperature unbalance problem among each module during discharging period. Temperature balance control between modules was performed by controlling the amount of discharging current for its corresponding temperature of each module of HVBAT, and temperature fluctuation was confirmed through a thermal camera. Data was collected by experiment about characteristic fluctuation of a battery according to temperature and validity of proposed control method is also proved by experiment.

A Method to Compensate the Distorted Space Vectors in the Unbalanced Neutral Point Voltage of 3-level NPC PWM Inverters Neutral point voltage;NPC inverter;Space vector;Unbalance; This paper proposes a compensation method to improve the distorted space vectors when a 3-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter has an unbalanced neutral point voltage. Since both the neutral point voltage of the DC link and the space vector of a 3-level NPC inverter are closely related depending on the output load connecting state, a distorted space vector can occur when the neutral point voltage of a 3-level NPC inverter is unbalanced. The proposed method can improve the distorted space vectors by adjusting the injection time of the small and medium vectors and by modulating the amplitude of the carrier waveforms. In this paper, the proposed method is verified by both simulation and experimental results based on a 3-level NPC inverter.
