Purpose. The research purpose is to study the effectiveness of artificial maintenance of the mined-out space based on the use of cable bolts to reduce the dilution coefficient when mining low-thickness ore bodies. Methods. Geotechnical mapping of the rock mass according to the Q, RMR, RQD and GSI rating classifications is conducted, as well as a linear survey of the fracture system in the hanging wall and footwall rocks is performed using a rock compass and the GEO ID application. Numerical analysis by the limit equilibrium method in the Unwedge software package is applied to determine the safety factor of a mass divided by fractures into wedges. Using a Schmidt test hammer, the uniaxial compressive strength of the mass rocks has been determined. The full-scale studies have been conducted using cable support in the conditions of the Akbakai deposit. Findings. It has been revealed that the footwall rocks are in a stable state, while the safety factor of the hanging wall rocks is 0.98, which requires artificial maintenance using cable bolts. The cable support parameters are calculated taking into account nonuniform distribution of horizontal and vertical stresses in the rock mass. It has been determined that when strengthening the hanging wall with cable bolts in inclined veins with a dip angle of up to 40º, the average ore dilution is 66.1%, and that of previously mined without fastening is 68.7%. In similar experiments in steep-dipping veins with a dip angle of more than 60º, dilution decreases from 62.8 to 48.7%. Originality. It has been revealed that in the conditions of the Akbakai deposit, cable fastening of the hanging wall rocks is effective at an ore deposit dip angle of more than 60º, at which the mined ore dilution coefficient decreases. Practical implications. The research results can be used to increase the stability of hanging wall rocks when mining low-thickness ore bodies with a sublevel caving system.

In recent years, the development of the mining industry in the Republic of Kazakhstan has been accompanied by the commissioning of new underground levels for many existing mineral deposits, which were initially developed through open-pit mining. As the depth of open-pit mining increases, the volume of overburden rises sharply, making open-pit mining unprofitable due to the significant amount of additional mining work required. For this reason, most open-pit mines in Kazakhstan are transitioning to underground mining, or combined mining. Many researchers have examined the timing of this transition and have worked on optimizing it to determine the best economic efficiency and manage risks. However, there is limited information available on how to determine the optimal location for a vertical mine shaft when transitioning from open-pit to underground mining. The purpose of this study is to identify a safe location for a vertical shaft in combined mining operations. Specifically, the study assesses the impact of the open-pit mine on the selection of the mine shaft’s location, considering the stress-strain state of the rock mass during combined mining methods. To address these objectives, numerical modeling of the stress-strain state around vertical excavations during combined mining was performed. The results provide a solution to the critical issue of determining the location of the mine shaft in combined geotechnology and lay the groundwork for further research on shaft placement in Kazakhstan. The novelty of this study lies in identifying the shaft location by considering the geometric shape of the open-pit mine and the depth of development. Purpose. The research purpose is to assess the stability of mine workings driven in a stratified rock mass by studying the influence of the stratified rock bedding angle on the rock mass stress-strain state (SSS). Methods. The research uses both experimental and numerical methods. Experimental studies are carried out using rock samples with different angles of rock layer occurrence, while numerical modeling is performed using the RS2 (Geotechnical Finite Element Analysis) software based on the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The studies are carried out on models covering the border area of the mine workings driven in the mass with the angles of rock occurrence from 0 to 75°. Findings. Experimental and numerical studies have shown that when the rock layer inclination angle changes, significant changes occur in the stress concentration zones around the mine workings. An increased rock layer inclination angle is accompanied by a change in stress distribution, which is important for assessing the stability of mine workings. A particularly strong influence is observed at the angles of rock occurrence 30° and above. Originality. The research novelty is in revealing the patterns in the stress distribution in the stratified rock masses depen-ding on the rock layer inclination angle. Research results provide new data on the rock interaction mechanisms in difficult geological conditions. Practical implications. The results obtained can be used in the planning and operation of mine workings in difficult geological conditions. By taking into account the changes in stress zones caused by the rock layer inclination angle, it is possible to improve the safety and efficiency of mining operations.

When excavating tunnels and underground openings with the drill-and-blast method, minimizing excavation overbreak is vital, as it reduces the costs associated with excavation stability, mucking, and rock support. Overbreak in excavations not only causes safety concerns but also increases the cost of construction and completion time. This paper proposes a contour blasting design in which the parameters are optimized based on the rock’s structural properties. Numerical modeling was used to identify the possible damage zones of rock with a change of the seismic load due to blasting. The results were used as input for the design of the proposed contour blasting with a low-brisance explosive. Experimental blasting tests were conducted at the Akbakai mine, located in Kazakhstan, and the performance of the design was examined. The proposed contour blasting was compared with the standard blasting method. The results indicated that the cross-section of excavation with the conventional blasting method varied between 10.5 and 12.1 m2, indicating an overbreak between 17 and 34%. However, with the suggested contour blasting, the overbreak was less than 13%. It was concluded that charging contour boreholes with low-brisance explosives is an effective method of reducing overbreak due to excessive explosive loads on the contour massif, which can improve the safety and profitability of mining operations.

Purpose. Studying the stress-strain state of the rock mass under the open pit, taking into account the change in the open-pit bottom width in order to reveal the geomechanical state and determine the safe parameters of the rock bridge. Methods. The peculiarities of the stress-strain state formation in the transition zone have been studied according to the methodology using numerical research methods and taking into account the geological strength index (GSI). Using this index, it is possible to take into account rock fracturing, water cut, lithology and other strength indicators, due to which there is a correct transition from the rock sample strength to the mass strength. Findings. Based on the numerical modeling results, it has been determined that an increase in the open-pit bottom width leads to a decrease in the zone of tensile stresses concentration in the arch pillar of the stope block. This, in turn, has a positive effect on the rock bridge stability, that is, the probability of the rock bridge collapse does not increase with an increase in the width of the open-pit bottom. Originality. For the first time, the dependence has been obtained of the horizontal stresses σ3 distribution at the stages of the open-pit bottom expansion at the Akzhal Zinc-Lead Mine. This makes it possible to realistically predict changes in the geomechanical state of the rock bridge depending on the width of the open-pit bottom. Practical implications. When predicting the change in the stress-strain state in the transition zone and determining the rock bridge safe parameters, it is possible to reduce the probability of their destruction and make timely management decisions on safe conditions for mining the reserves.
