The coronavirus outbreak started on December 31, 2019, when the City Health Commission of Wuhan (China) reported 27 cases of pneumonia of unknown etiology. This disease, which is caused by a new coronavirus, was named as coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization on February 11, 2020. This situation, which was declared a pandemic after a short time, has deeply affected the entire health system as well as the operating room. Accordingly, nurses have important roles and responsibilities related to education, management, personal protective equipment, surgery planning, patient and employee safety. In this study, nurses’ roles in personal protective equipment use in the operating room during the COVID-19 pandemic was compiled in detail. Currently, while attitudes and indicators are dominated by the idea that the pandemic is close to end, we need to question of whether nurses are still ready for COVID-19 patients.

Background/Objectives: Circulating biomarkers reflecting distinct aspects of tumor and host biology may provide complementary information in gastric cancer. We characterized serum R-Spondin-1, nesfatin-1, and irisin and explored whether their combined assessment improved case–control discrimination beyond individual markers. Methods: In this single-center case–control study, serum concentrations were measured by ELISA in 49 patients with histopathologically confirmed gastric adenocarcinoma and 50 age- and sex-frequency-matched apparently healthy controls; all samples were obtained before any gastric resection. Between-group differences were quantified using effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals. Associations with gastric cancer status were examined using Firth penalized logistic regression; discrimination was explored using ROC analysis with bootstrap internal validation. Results: R-Spondin-1 was higher in gastric cancer than in controls (14.03 ± 2.75 vs. 8.47 ± 2.48 ng/mL; Cohen’s d = 2.12), whereas nesfatin-1 (2.79 ± 0.88 vs. 4.19 ± 0.81 ng/mL; d = −1.65) and irisin (7.48 ± 2.18 vs. 11.52 ± 1.97 ng/mL; d = −1.95) were lower. Associations remained after adjustment. Individual AUCs were 0.926, 0.885, and 0.913; the exploratory three-marker signature yielded an AUC of 0.964 (95% CI 0.932–0.996) and an optimism-corrected AUC of 0.958. Results were materially similar in treatment-naive patients. Conclusions: Gastric cancer was associated with increased R-Spondin-1 and decreased nesfatin-1 and irisin. This pattern likely reflects tumor–host interaction, including mucosal and wasting-related contributions, rather than independent tumor-specific signals. These case–control estimates do not represent diagnostic accuracy, do not support early-detection use, and require prospective validation in clinically representative cohorts.

Background: Postoperative pain is a significant continuous clinical problem for patients in surgical units. This study aimed to examine surgical nurses’ attitudes toward the use of non-pharmacological techniques in postoperative pain management and to identify factors associated with these attitudes. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2025 and February 2026 with 200 nurses working in the surgical clinics of a private hospital in Türkiye. Data were collected through digital forms by using the Socio-Demographic Data Form and the Attitude Scale Toward Non-Pharmacological Techniques in Postoperative Pain Management. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, and one-way ANOVA were used for data analysis (p < 0.05). Results: Approximately 59% of the nurses were aged 20–29 years, and 65.5% were female. 68% of the nurses used both pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques in postoperative pain management, and 80% of them believed that non-pharmacological methods were effective. The mean total score obtained from the scale was 48.42 ± 9.70, indicating that nurses had a positive attitude toward the use of non-pharmacological techniques. Mean scores related to non-pharmacological techniques differed significantly according to gender, marital status, educational level, professional experience, and department (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Surgical nurses demonstrated positive attitudes toward non-pharmacological postoperative pain management. Non-pharmacological techniques should be integrated into clinical practice by nurses in pain management.

Paresis/paraplegia is a serious complication that develops after open repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) and has high morbidity/mortality rates. To deal with paresis/paraplegia Cerebro Spinal Fluid drainage is recommended. Various approaches exist in this regard, such as the “clamp and fix” technique, the use of distal perfusion via partial (left heart) or total cardiopulmonary bypass. These approaches can reduce the complications of paresis/paraplegia by preventing spinal cord ischemic injury. In this study, we aimed to present a monoparesis management case diagnosed after TAAAA surgery.

Objective: Nursing professionals’ main aim is to meet human needs. Therefore, in the nursing profession, it is essential that patients receive reliable care and treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of the transportation of patients and the healthcare professionals' experiences inside the operating theatre. Method: This Cross-sectional descriptive research was conducted at a private hospital between 01/04/2016 and 30/04/2016. During the research period, 152 patients who were operated on at the relevant operating theatre were chosen as the population of the study. The researcher collected the data by observing and documenting the transportation processes and conducted a survey towards healthcare professionals. There were 12 open-ended questions in the interview form developed by the researcher to determine the experiences of healthcare professionals working in patient transport processes. Statistical analysis was performed with the IBM SPSS 20.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) package program. Results: According to the research, almost all safety standards were properly performed, excluding the standards of; leaving the patients unattended (17.2-35.5 %), introducing oneself to the patient (0-4.6 %) and patient handover (5.9-34.9 %). Healthcare professionals mostly complain of personnel shortage (24.0 %) and feel worried during the transportation of patients (60.0 %). Conclusion: In this study, it was observed that almost all safety standards were properly performed, and that very few complications occurred so that the transportation processes of the patients were found safe. Nurses were found to be inactive during these transportation processes. We suggest that all healthcare professionals be trained in and perform studies about the transportation of patients.

Mizahın hasta ve hastalık üzerine etkili olabileceğine dair ilk belgelenmiş veriler, Norman Cousins’in Bir Hastalığın Anatomisi (Anatomy of an Illness) adlı eserinde yer almaktadır. The first documented evidence that humor can influence patients and illnesses is found in Norman Cousins’s book, Anatomy of an Illness. This best-selling book, published in 1964 describes how humor can help healing ankylosing spondylitis (a painful disease that causes the spinal cord to deteriorate). Great thinkers such as Plato, Descartes, Aristotle, Kant, Darwin, Freud, Twain, and Hobbes have long tried to define humor. Consequently, the typology and function of humor can be traced back to Ancient Greece in the 4th and 5th centuries BC. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) defines Traditional and Complementary Medicine as: “A branch of medicine that includes a variety of medical and health systems, practices, and products that are not considered part of modern medicine”.
