This research work evaluates the use of artificial intelligence and its impact on student’s academic performance at the University of Guayaquil (UG). The objective was to design and implement a predictive model to predict academic performance to anticipate student performance. This research presents a quantitative, non-experimental, projective, and predictive approach. A questionnaire was developed with the factors involved in academic performance, and the criterion of expert judgment was used to validate the questionnaire. The questionnaire and the Google Forms platform were used for data collection. In total, 1100 copies of the questionnaire were distributed, and 1012 responses were received, representing a response rate of 92%. The prediction model was designed in Gretl software, and the model fit was performed considering the mean square error (0.26), the mean absolute error (0.16), and a coefficient of determination of 0.9075. The results show the statistical significance of age, hours, days, and AI-based tools or applications, presenting p-values < 0.001 and positive coefficients close to zero, demonstrating a significant and direct effect on students’ academic performance. It was concluded that it is possible to implement a predictive model with theoretical support to adapt the variables based on artificial intelligence, thus generating an artificial intelligence-based mode.
This article addresses the integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in higher education institutions, exploring its effects on academic performance and students’ ability to address sustainability challenges. Using the PRISMA 2020 methodology for a systematic literature review, 50 relevant articles were selected from 543 records, providing data on the academic impacts of ESD through bibliometric approaches and surveys. The results revealed that ESD improves academic performance, motivation and engagement, as well as enhances students’ ability to solve complex problems sustainably. However, significant barriers, such as a lack of resources and adequate teacher training, hinder effective implementation. Approximately 60% of students in ESD programs show greater motivation and analytical abilities compared to 50% in traditional programs. ESD enriches academic training and equips students with essential practical skills, preparing them to be agents of positive change. Incorporating emerging technologies and participatory learning methods is crucial to enhancing ESD effectiveness. Greater investment in teacher training and standardized educational materials, along with the promotion of international collaboration to share resources and best practices, is required.
Melanoma is the most aggressive and prevalent form of skin cancer globally, with a higher incidence in men and individuals with fair skin. Early detection of melanoma is essential for the successful treatment and prevention of metastasis. In this context, deep learning methods, distinguished by their ability to perform automated and detailed analysis, extracting melanoma-specific features, have emerged. These approaches excel in performing large-scale analysis, optimizing time, and providing accurate diagnoses, contributing to timely treatments compared to conventional diagnostic methods. The present study offers a methodology to assess the effectiveness of an AlexNet-based convolutional neural network (CNN) in identifying early-stage melanomas. The model is trained on a balanced dataset of 10,605 dermoscopic images, and on modified datasets where hair, a potential obstructive factor, was detected and removed allowing for an assessment of how hair removal affects the model’s overall performance. To perform hair removal, we propose a morphological algorithm combined with different filtering techniques for comparison: Fourier, Wavelet, average blur, and low-pass filters. The model is evaluated through 10-fold cross-validation and the metrics of accuracy, recall, precision, and the F1 score. The results demonstrate that the proposed model performs the best for the dataset where we implemented both a Wavelet filter and hair removal algorithm. It has an accuracy of 91.30%, a recall of 87%, a precision of 95.19%, and an F1 score of 90.91%.
Low back pain (LBP) is a highly common musculoskeletal condition and the leading cause of work absenteeism. This project aims to develop a medical test to help healthcare professionals decide on and assign physical treatment for patients with nonspecific LBP. The design uses machine learning (ML) models based on the classification of motion capture (MoCap) data obtained from the range of motion (ROM) exercises among healthy and clinically diagnosed patients with LBP from Imbabura–Ecuador. The following seven ML algorithms were tested for evaluation and comparison: logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), multilayer perceptron (MLP), and gradient boosting algorithms. All ML techniques obtained an accuracy above 80%, and three models (SVM, random forest, and MLP) obtained an accuracy of >90%. SVM was found to be the best-performing algorithm. This article aims to improve the applicability of inertial MoCap in healthcare by making use of precise spatiotemporal measurements with a data-driven treatment approach to improve the quality of life of people with chronic LBP.
This study presents a hybrid method for state-of-charge (SOC) estimation of lithium-ion batteries using LSTM neural networks optimized with genetic algorithms (GA), combined with Coulomb Counting (CC) as an initial estimator. Experimental tests were conducted using medium-voltage (48–72 V) lithium-ion battery packs under standardized driving cycles (NEDC and WLTP). The proposed method enhances prediction accuracy under dynamic conditions by recalibrating the LSTM output with CC estimates through a dynamic fusion parameter . The novelty of this approach lies in the integration of machine learning and physical modeling, optimized via evolutionary algorithms, to address limitations of standalone methods in real-time applications. The hybrid model achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.181%, outperforming conventional estimation strategies. These findings contribute to more reliable battery management systems (BMS) for electric vehicles and second-life applications.
The goal of a telerehabilitation platform is to safely and securely facilitate the rehabilitation of patients through the use of telecommunication technologies complemented with the use of biomedical smart sensors. The purpose of this study was to perform a usability evaluation of a telerehabilitation platform. To improve the level of usability, the researchers developed and proposed an iterative process. The platform uses a digital representation of the patient which duplicates the therapeutic exercise being executed by the patient; this is detected by a Kinect camera and sensors in real time. This study used inspection methods to perform a usability evaluation of an exploratory prototype of a telerehabilitation platform. In addition, a cognitive workload assessment was performed to complement the usability evaluation. Users were involved through all the stages of the iterative refinement process. Usability issues were progressively reduced from the first iteration to the fourth iteration according to improvements which were developed and applied by the experts. Usability issues originally cataloged as catastrophic were reduced to zero, major usability problems were reduced to ten (2.75%) and minor usability problems were decreased to 141 (38.74%). This study also intends to serve as a guide to improve the usability of e-Health systems in alignment with the software development cycle.
