This review paper is focused on the design of anthracene and furan-containing Schiff bases and their advanced properties as ligands in complex transition metal ions The paper also provides a brief overview on a variety of biological applications, namely, potent candidates with antibacterial and antifungal activity, antioxidant and chemosensing properties. These advantageous properties are enhanced upon metal complexing. The subject of the review has been extended with a brief discussion on reactivity of Schiff bases with hydrogen phosphonates and the preparation of low and high molecular phosphonates, as well as their application as pharmacological agents. This work will be of interest for scientists seeking new challenges in discovering advanced pharmacological active molecules gaining inspiration from the versatile families of imines and aminophosphonates.

Well-defined linear and multi-arm star polymer structures were used as the templates for in situ synthesis and stabilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). This approach led to hybrid nanomaterials with high stability and antibacterial activity to both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The ecologically friendly so called “green” synthesis of nanomaterials was performed through AgNPs preparation in the aqueous solutions of star and linear poly(N,N′-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)s (PDMAEMAs); the process was followed with time. The size, shape, and zeta potential of the obtained hybrids were determined. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the antibacterial activity of PDMAEMA hybrid nanomaterial against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated and assessed by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum biocidal concentration (MBC). Completely quaternized with ethyl bromide, star and linear PDMAEMAs were used in comparative biological tests. The modification of the polymers with in situ-formed AgNPs increased the antibacterial properties against all studied strains of bacteria by several times in comparison to non-modified polymers and quaternized polymers. These results yield novel nanohybrid materials that can be useful for applications in medicine and biology.
Adsorption methods for CO2 capture are characterized by high selectivity and low energy consumption. Therefore, the engineering of solid supports for efficient CO2 adsorption attracts research attention. Modification of mesoporous silica materials with tailor-made organic molecules can greatly improve silica’s performance in CO2 capture and separation. In that context, a new derivative of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide, possessing an electron-rich condensed aromatic structure and also known for its anti-oxidative properties, was synthesized and applied as a modifying agent of 2D SBA-15, 3D SBA-16, and KIT-6 silicates. The physicochemical properties of the initial and modified materials were studied using nitrogen physisorption and temperature-gravimetric analysis. The adsorption capacity of CO2 was measured in a dynamic CO2 adsorption regime. The three modified materials displayed a higher capacity for CO2 adsorption than the initial ones. Among the studied sorbents, the modified mesoporous SBA-15 silica showed the highest adsorption capacity for CO2 (3.9 mmol/g). In the presence of 1 vol.% water vapor, the adsorption capacities of the modified materials were enhanced. Total CO2 desorption from the modified materials was achieved at 80 °C. The obtained silica materials displayed stable performance in five CO2 adsorption/desorption cycles. The experimental data can be appropriately described by the Yoon–Nelson kinetic model.

This paper reports the experimental study carried out to establish the dependence of the thermal conductivity of polypropylene-based nanocomposites filled with carbon nanotubes on the main parameter of the temperature regime of their manufacturing ‒ the level of overheating a polymer melt relative to its melting point. The study has been conducted for nanocomposites that were manufactured by applying a method based on the mixing of components in the polymer melt applying a special disk extruder. During the composite manufacturing process, the level of melt overheating varied from 10 to 75 K, with the mass share of filler ranging from 0.3 to 10.0 %. It is shown that increasing the overheating of a polymer melt causes an increase in the thermal conductivity of the composites. However, when the overheating has reached a certain value, its further growth does not increase the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites. Based on the established pattern, the rational level of this overheating has been determined. That resolves the tasks of manufacturing highly heat-conducting nanocomposites and implementing appropriate energy-saving technology. Data have been acquired on the effects of the impact of the amount of polymer melt overheating on the values of the first and second percolation thresholds for the examined nanocomposites. It is established that the value of the first percolation threshold is more sensitive to the specified amount of overheating. The dependences of the density of the examined composites on the level of polymer melt overheating have been derived. The correlation between a given dependence and the nature of a corresponding change in the thermal conductivity of the composites has been established. Applying the proposed highly heat-conducting nanocomposites is promising for micro and nanoelectronics, energy, etc.
The use of biodegradable polyesters derived from green sources and their combination with natural abundantly layered aluminosilicate clay, e.g., natural montmorillonite, meets the requirements for the development of new sustainable, disposable, and biodegradable organic dye sorbent materials. In this regard, novel electrospun composite fibers, based on poly β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and in situ synthesized poly(vinyl formate) (PVF), loaded with protonated montmorillonite (MMT-H) were prepared via electrospinning in the presence of formic acid, a volatile solvent for polymers and a protonating agent for the pristine MMT-Na. The morphology and structure of electrospun composite fibers were investigated through SEM, TEM, AFM, FT-IR, and XRD analyses. The contact angle (CA) measurements showed increased hydrophilicity of the composite fibers incorporated with MMT-H. The electrospun fibrous mats were evaluated as membranes for removing cationic (methylene blue) and anionic (Congo red) dyes. PHB/MMT 20% and PVF/MMT 30% showed significant performance in dye removal compared with the other matrices. PHB/MMT 20% was the best electrospun mat for adsorbing Congo red. The PVF/MMT 30% fibrous membrane exhibited the optimum activity for the adsorption of methylene blue and Congo red dyes.
