Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) circuits have contributed to modernising electrical grids in different segments, such as distributed generation, identification and characterisation of phenomena related to power quality, localisation of faults, among others. This justifies the undergone research aiming at increasing their performance under certain conditions. Taking the example of the single-phase PLLs, researchers have worked out ways to cope with the characteristic doubly-frequency oscillation, which can undermine the performance of the frequency and phase tracking and compromise the extraction of the fundamental component from the input signal. In this sense, the present article aims at analysing a single-phase PLL circuit providing a methodology to adjust the control gains and minimise low-frequency oscillation. As for the analysed PLL, simulations in the time domain were carried out for modified versions of the well-known E-PLL, SOGI-PLL, and APF-PLL, all of them comprising notch filters and to cope with the doubly-frequency oscillation.

This paper presents a linearized Thévenin-equivalent circuit for a grid-forming Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) under double closed-loop control, comprehending an outer voltage control-loop together with an inner current control-loop. Both the AC-side Thévenin model and the equivalent admittance of the DC-side were derived in this work. The proposed MMC model takes into account the influence of passive elements and the control-loop effects on the impedances and gains. With this model it was possible to observe how the control system parameters changes resonant frequencies in both DC-side equivalent admittance and AC-side equivalent model. A comparison between the frequency response of the proposed analytical model and the frequency response obtained from the nonlinear time-domain model is presented to validate the proposed MMC model. The proposed model allows analyzing the dynamic response of the MMC as grid-forming converter in the frequency domain. Finally, as an application example, the stability of an ordinary power-electronic-based system (comprised of a grid-forming MMC supplying a current controlled MMC) was assessed and PSCAD/EMTDC simulations are presented to validate the results predicted by the proposed model.

An experimental evaluation of a digital control system based on a dual Digital Signal Processor (DSP) architecture is proposed for a three phase Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). A classical UQPC is constituted by two power conditioners, connected in series and shunted with the power grid, and sharing a common DC-link. In a smart grid scenario of operation, a UPQC will be fundamental for compensating power quality problems, also contributing to improving the efficiency of the electrical grids from a global perspective. The UPQC operation requires a bidirectional energy transfer between the two power conditioners, however, respecting some constraints, they can be controlled independently. In order to take advantage of this characteristic, the control algorithms can be executed on two independent DSPs, without any communication between them and maintaining the operational characteristics of the UPQC. Comparing with the classical control architecture based on a single DSP, with the proposed dual DSP architecture, the computational effort of each DSP is decreased of about 35%, allowing to increase the sampling rate. Therefore, the main advantages of the proposed approach are the minimization of delays caused by the processing time, which are very common in digital control systems, as well as the increment of the UPQC performance. Along the paper, detailed analysis of the processing speed and memory requirements to implement the UPQC control algorithms in both DSPs is presented. The paper also presents a set of detailed experimental results, obtained with a developed 5 kVA laboratory prototype of UPQC, which was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed dual DSP architecture.

This paper addresses a control algorithm to determine the reference currents indirectly from the grid voltages, taking into account the limited capacity of the power converter for compensating, entirely, the selected harmonic current. In previous works, the reference current was indirectly determined based on an average component correlated with the selected harmonic current. Thus, when the selected harmonic current was entirely compensated, that average value was decreased to zero. Now, this paper introduces a novel control algorithm considering the limited capacity of the power converter for producing the selected harmonic current. In this novel condition, the phase-angle of the reference current is dynamically modified while the minimum point of the cost function is not reached. The remaining parameters of the reference currents correspond to the harmonic frequency and amplitude as well. The harmonic frequency was identified through a PLL (Phase-Locked-Loop) circuit whereas the amplitude corresponds to a specific value of 10A to all of the developed test cases. Other aspects of the simulated power circuit, control algorithms, including the optimization methods, are described throughout the paper. Simulation results involving different test cases were implemented to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm compensating of the fifth-harmonic component under transient -and steady-state conditions.

The growing concern on environmental issues caused by fossil fuels and, indeed, on the availability of such energy resources in a long-run basis have settled the ground for the spreading of the so called green energy sources. Among them, photovoltaic energy stands out due to the possibility of turning practically any household into a micro power plant. One important aspect about this source of energy is that practical photovoltaic generators are equipped with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) systems. Currently, researchers are focused on developing MPPT algorithms for partial shaded panels, among which, particle swarm optimization (PSO) MPPT stands out. PSO is an artificial intelligence method based on the behavior of flock of birds and it works arranging a group of mathematical entities named particles to deal with an optimization problem. Thus, this work focus on analyzing the performance of this algorithm under different design conditions, which means different amount of particles and different set points for the constants. Besides that, the article presents a brief guideline on how to implement PSO-MPPT. Simulations of an array with three photovoltaic panels, boost-converter driven, were carried out in order to back the analyzes.

Fast charging stations are a key element for the wide spreading of Electric Vehicles (EVs) by reducing the charging time to a range between 20 to 40 min. However, the integration of fast charging stations causes some adverse impacts on the Power Grid (PG), namely by the huge increase in the peak demand during short periods of time. This paper addresses the design of the power electronics converters for an EV DC fast charging station with local storage capability and easy interface of renewables. In the proposed topology, the energy storage capability is used to smooth the peak power demand, inherent to fast charging systems, and contributes to the stability of the PG. When integrated in a Smart Grid, the proposed topology may even return some of the stored energy back to the power grid, when necessary. The accomplishment of the aforementioned objectives requires a set of different power electronics converters that are described and discussed in this paper.

This paper presents a low-cost IGBT driver for single-phase full-bridge converter, including a dead time circuit. The IGBT model corresponds to GA75Ts120U from International Rectifier. It is important to highlight that, in essence, the IGBT driver was implemented with discrete components, which considerably decreases its cost in comparison to the similar circuits available in the market. Simulation- and experimental-results of the implemented converter are provided to evaluate the performance of the IGBT driver.

This study presents a technique to locate the source of faults in distribution systems, i.e. to pinpoint where the fault has occurred along the distribution system. More specifically, it localises the origin of short duration voltage variations (SDVVs) in a distribution system. Fault location (its origin) is estimated solely from the voltage waveforms during the fault. More specifically, the energies of the instantaneous symmetrical components corresponding to the voltage waveforms are used to estimate the fault location. The proposed localisation strategy considers that the signal records during a fault are captured at the feeder start node and at other nodes scattered along the distribution systems. Simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed technique to accurately localise the origin of faults in distribution systems.

In this paper, a modulation technique is proposed by combining selective harmonic elimination (SHE-PWM) and an optimized procedure with genetic algorithms (GA). The purpose is to mitigate individual harmonic components (5 th , 7 th , 11 th , 13 th ), reduce total harmonic distortion (THD%), control the amplitude modulation index (m a ) and frequency of the output fundamental component, while complying with the Brazilian grid codes. The GA determines three best fitted switching angles, by means of five evaluation or cost functions: one is proposed and other four ones are existing formulas obtained from the literature. Moreover, this optimized SHE-PWM based GA is applied to a proposed modular seven-level multilevel inverter (7-level MLC 2 ), which is based on the modular five-level MLC 2 (5-level MLC 2 ) topology. In this new circuit arrangement the neutral-point-clamped (NPC) technology based three-level switch leg, very well known in industry, is applied, and reduced number of switch count is achieved, when compared with classical NPC counterpart. Filterless operation and compliance with grid codes are evaluated by simulation results.

Recently, it has been shown that complementarity models are an attracting tool for representing power converters in both open- and closed-loop configuration. A unique dynamical complementarity model captures all the modes of a power converter, without assuming the a priori knowledge of the sequence of modes or of the switching time instants. In this paper, we derive the complementarity model of a single-phase active filter with cascaded multilevel inverter. A combination of the unipolar and the phase-disposition PWM techniques is used with the goal of regulating the dc-link voltage. As benchmark for comparison, the time evolution of inductors currents and capacitors voltages computed with the complementarity procedure is compared with the ones obtained with PSIM software.

This paper addresses a novel control algorithm for a selective active filter compensating specific harmonic currents and the fundamental negative-sequence component of the load current. The proposed control algorithm combines the resonant controller with a PLL circuit to determine the current references in αβ frame. Previous works introduced control algorithms for a selective active filter connected to radial grid, in dq frame, where the load currents were no longer used to determine the current references. However the transient performance of the active filter was compromised, once the current references are indirectly determined and, moreover, due to the presence of low-pass filters. Now, this work proposes an algorithm where the low-pass filters is removed, therefore the overall control algorithm becomes simpler to be implemented with the active filter presenting a faster transient response. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the proposed algorithm with the active filter compensating symmetrical harmonic currents under transient- and steady-state conditions.

This study presents control algorithms for a new unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) without the series transformers that are frequently used to make the insertion of the series converter of the UPQC between the power supply and the load. The behaviour of the proposed UPQC is evaluated in presence of voltage imbalances, as well as under non-sinusoidal voltage-and current conditions. The presented algorithms derive from the concepts involving the active and non-active currents, together with a phase-locked-loop circuit. Based on these real-time algorithms, and considering the proposed hardware topology, the UPQC is able to compensate the harmonic components of the voltages and currents, correct the power factor, and keep the load voltages regulated, all of this in a dynamic way, responding instantaneously to changes in the loads or in the electrical power system. The control algorithms were distributed in a two-DSP digital control architecture, without any communication between them. Consequently, can be increased the sampling frequency of the acquired voltages and currents and improve the UPQC performance. Furthermore, some constraints of the proposed UPQC are evidenced, particularly when the main voltages are imbalanced. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the UPQC performance under transient and steady state conditions.
