Joao L. Afonso completed his Ph.D. in Industrial Electronics from the University of Minho in 2000. He completed his Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from COPPE-UFRJ, respectively in 1986 and 1991. He is a Full Professor at the Department of Industrial Electronics at the University of Minho, where he has worked since 1993, and where he teaches the curricular units of Electrical Machines, Power Electronics Complements, Power Systems, Electrical Power Quality, Active Power Filters and Renewable Energies. His research work is carried out at the Power and Energy Electronics Group (GEPE), of which he is coordinator. His research interests include: Electrical Power Quality, Active Power Filters, Energy Monitoring Systems, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energies, Energy Storage Systems, Electric and Hybrid Vehicles, innovative technologies for Railway Systems, Smart Grids and Smart Cities.
