Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the prodromal stage of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Identifying MCI subjects who are at high risk of converting to AD is crucial for effective treatments. In this study, a deep learning approach based on convolutional neural networks (CNN), is designed to accurately predict MCI-to-AD conversion with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. First, MRI images are prepared with age-correction and other processing. Second, local patches, which are assembled into 2.5 dimensions, are extracted from these images. Then, the patches from AD and normal controls (NC) are used to train a CNN to identify deep learning features of MCI subjects. After that, structural brain image features are mined with FreeSurfer to assist CNN. Finally, both types of features are fed into an extreme learning machine classifier to predict the AD conversion. The proposed approach is validated on the standardized MRI datasets from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) project. This approach achieves an accuracy of 79.9% and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 86.1% in leave-one-out cross validations. Compared with other state-of-the-art methods, the proposed one outperforms others with higher accuracy and AUC, while keeping a good balance between the sensitivity and specificity. Results demonstrate great potentials of the proposed CNN-based approach for the prediction of MCI-to-AD conversion with solely MRI data. Age correction and assisted structural brain image features can boost the prediction performance of CNN.

Combining multi-modality data for brain disease diagnosis such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) commonly leads to improved performance than those using a single modality. However, it is still challenging to train a multi-modality model since it is difficult in clinical practice to obtain complete data that includes all modality data. Generally speaking, it is difficult to obtain both magnetic resonance images (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) images of a single patient. PET is expensive and requires the injection of radioactive substances into the patient’s body, while MR images are cheaper, safer, and more widely used in practice. Discarding samples without PET data is a common method in previous studies, but the reduction in the number of samples will result in a decrease in model performance. To take advantage of multi-modal complementary information, we first adopt the Reversible Generative Adversarial Network (RevGAN) model to reconstruct the missing data. After that, a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) classification model with multi-modality input was proposed to perform AD diagnosis. We have evaluated our method on the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, and compared the performance of the proposed method with those using state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results show that the structural and functional information of brain tissue can be mapped well and that the image synthesized by our method is close to the real image. In addition, the use of synthetic data is beneficial for the diagnosis and prediction of Alzheimer’s disease, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) provides an effective way for foot drop (FD) correction. To overcome the redundant and blind stimulation problems in the state-of-the-art methods, this study proposes a closed-loop scheme for an adaptive electromyography (EMG)-modulated stimulation profile. The developed method detects real-time angular velocity during walking. It provides feedbacks to a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network for predicting synchronous tibialis anterior (TA) EMG. Based on the prediction, it modulates the stimulation intensity, taking into account of the subject-specific dead zone and saturation of the electrically evoked activation. The proposed method is tested on ten able-bodied participants and six FD subjects as a proof of concept. The experimental results show that proposed method can successfully induce the dorsiflexion of the ankle joint, and generate an activation pattern similar to a natural gait, with the mean Correlation Coefficient of 0.9021. Thus, the proposed method has a potential to help patients to retrieve normal gait.

Muscle fatigue, as a common physiological phenomenon, has attracted much attention in the fields of rehabilitation and athletic training. A wearable technology for monitoring the muscle fatigue anytime and anywhere is urgently needed. In this paper we apply Electrical impedance myography (EIM) technique, usually used for non-invasive detection of neuromuscular diseases with the four-electrode array, for evaluation of the local muscle fatigue status via the variation of electrical impedance. An equivalent multilayer inhomogeneous 3D finite element model of human arm was built in order to optimize the four-electrode configuration to improve EIM detection sensitivity. Current density in muscle layer and differential potential of induction electrodes were selected as the evaluation indexes for optimization. Then the in vivo experiments of dynamic contraction with different maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) were performed on the biceps brachii muscle of eight healthy volunteers. The results showed that muscle resistance (R) decreased almost 8 Ω from the completely relaxed muscle to exhaustion, which is the same trend as for the median frequency (MF) of measured surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. The model and experiments in this paper indicate the feasibility and efficiency of EIM for detection of muscle fatigue using wearable devices.

Intra-Body Communication (IBC), which modulates ionic currents over the human body as the communication medium, offers a low power and reliable signal transmission method for information exchange across the body. This paper first briefly reviews the quasi-static electromagnetic (EM) field modeling for a galvanic-type IBC human limb operating below 1 MHz and obtains the corresponding transfer function with correction factor using minimum mean square error (MMSE) technique. Then, the IBC channel characteristics are studied through the comparison between theoretical calculations via this transfer function and experimental measurements in both frequency domain and time domain. High pass characteristics are obtained in the channel gain analysis versus different transmission distances. In addition, harmonic distortions are analyzed in both baseband and passband transmissions for square input waves. The experimental results are consistent with the calculation results from the transfer function with correction factor. Furthermore, we also explore both theoretical and simulation results for the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of several common modulation schemes in the IBC system with a carrier frequency of 500 kHz. It is found that the theoretical results are in good agreement with the simulation results.

Existing research on human channel modeling of galvanic coupling intra-body communication (IBC) is primarily focused on the human body itself. Although galvanic coupling IBC is less disturbed by external influences during signal transmission, there are inevitable factors in real measurement scenarios such as the parasitic impedance of electrodes, impedance matching of the transceiver, etc. which might lead to deviations between the human model and the in vivo measurements. This paper proposes a field-circuit finite element method (FEM) model of galvanic coupling IBC in a real measurement environment to estimate the human channel gain. First an anisotropic concentric cylinder model of the electric field intra-body communication for human limbs was developed based on the galvanic method. Then the electric field model was combined with several impedance elements, which were equivalent in terms of parasitic impedance of the electrodes, input and output impedance of the transceiver, establishing a field-circuit FEM model. The results indicated that a circuit module equivalent to external factors can be added to the field-circuit model, which makes this model more complete, and the estimations based on the proposed field-circuit are in better agreement with the corresponding measurement results.
