The energy storage system (ESS) is the main issue in traction applications, such as battery electric vehicles (BEVs). To alleviate the shortage of power density in BEVs, a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) can be used as an alternative ESS. HESS has the dynamic features of the battery and a supercapacitor (SC), and it requires an intelligent energy management system (EMS) to operate it effectively. In this study, a real-time EMS is proposed, which is comprised of a fuzzy logic controller-based low-pass filter and an adaptive proportional integrator-based charge controller. The proposed EMS intelligently distributes the required power from the battery and SC during acceleration. It allocates the braking energy to the SC on the basis of the state of charge. A simulation study was conducted for three standard drive cycles (New York City cycle, Artemis urban cycle, and New York composite cycle) using MATLAB Simulink. Comparative analysis of conventional and proposed EMSs was carried out. The results reveal that the proposed EMS reduced the stress, temperature, and power losses of the battery. The steady-state charging performance of the SC was 98%, 95%, and 96% for the mentioned drive cycles.
Previously, we showed that exposure of human normal and cancer cells to a 6 mT, 60 Hz gradient electromagnetic field (EMF) induced genotoxicity. Here, we investigated the cellular effects of a uniform EMF. Single or repetitive exposure to a 6 mT, 60 Hz uniform EMF neither induced DNA damage nor affected cell viability in HeLa and primary IMR-90 fibroblasts. However, continuous exposure of these cells to an EMF promoted cell proliferation. Cell viability increased 24.4% for HeLa and 15.2% for IMR-90 cells after a total 168 h exposure by subculture. This increase in cell proliferation was directly correlated with EMF strength and exposure time. When further incubated without EMF, cell proliferation slowed down to that of unexposed cells, suggesting that the proliferative effect is reversible. The expression of cell cycle markers increased in cells continuously exposed to an EMF as expected, but the distribution of cells in each stage of the cell cycle did not change. Notably, intracellular reactive oxygen species levels decreased and phosphorylation of Akt and Erk1/2 increased in cells exposed to an EMF, suggesting that reduced levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species play a role in increased proliferation. These results demonstrate that EMF uniformity at an extremely low frequency (ELF) is an important factor in the cellular effects of ELF-EMF.
There were many attempts to design the rotor bar shape to increase the starting torque in squirrel cage induction motor, and it is well known that deep slot of rotor bar increases the starting torque. However, this deep slot increases the leakage flux so that it hurts the running efficiencies. To increase the running efficiency, it is necessary to keep shallow slot of rotor bar. This paper presents a new design of rotor bar to improve the starting torque without decreasing motor efficiency. The influence of current density of rotor bar on starting torque and rotor copper loss is analyzed so as to design the shapes of rotor bar. In the design, the starting torque was improved by increasing the rotor resistance at startup, and the rotor reactance was maintained during operation. The result showed the improvement of the starting torque without reducing the running efficiency.
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been prominently used in medium- and high-power applications. This paper presents the control of output and circulating current of MMC using sliding mode control (SMC). The design of the proposed controller and the relation between control parameters and validity condition are based on the system dynamics. The proposed designed controller enables the system to track its reference values. The controller is designed to control both output current and circulating current along with suppression of second harmonics contents in circulating current. Furthermore, the capacitor voltage and energy of the converter are also regulated. The control of output current is carried out in -axis as well as in with first-order switching law. However, a second-order switching law-based super twisting algorithm is used for controlling circulating current and suppression of its second harmonics contents. The stability of the controlled system is numerically calculated and verified by Lyapunov stability conditions. Moreover, the simulation results of the proposed controller are critically compared with the conventional proportional resonant (PR) controller to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. The proposed controller attains faster dynamic response and minimizes steady-state error comparatively. The simulation of the MMC model is carried out in MATLAB/Simulink.

Unlike three-phase induction motors, circular rotating fields cannot be inherently formed in single-phase induction motors (SPIMs). Backward rotating fields inevitably result in elliptical rotating fields and degradations of the performance (efficiency, torque). Therefore, the necessity for making rotating fields circular should be emphasized to maximize the effectiveness of design at an arbitrary operating point. In this article, the determination scheme of stator parameters based on circular rotating fields is introduced from equivalent circuits. The derived parameters of stator winding consider circular rotating fields and minimizing copper loss of stator windings, respectively. Then, examples of the design demonstrate the validation of the algorithm. Finally, the comparisons between reference and designed model illustrate that the proposed algorithm can provide insight into the design of high-performance capacitor-run SPIMs.
In general, a magnetic flux leakage (MFL) pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) has been applied to nondestructive testing for investigating ferromagnetic materials, such as underground gas pipelines. Although MFL PIG is efficient to the inter-city large-scale pipelines, it is hard to apply to small-size pipelines that are usually installed in the city, because the permanent magnet for MFL PIG is too big and heavy to operate inside the small pipe. The strong adhesive magnetic force of permanent magnet to the pipe wall also prevents the usage of MFL PIG in small pipelines. In this paper, we propose a new technology of nondestructive inspection by using a differential coil, which is easy to be manufactured with lightweight, low cost, and simple structure for operating inside the underground pipelines. Comparing with the conventional permanent-magnet MFL PIG, the results of the proposed system could also maximize the detection sensitivity of defect signals and minimize the magnetic adhesive force on the pipe wall simultaneously.
