A new class of two-dimensional nanomaterials, MXenes, which are carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides of transition and refractory metals, has been critically analyzed. Since the synthesis of the first family member in 2011 by Yury Gogotsi and colleagues, MXenes have quickly become attractive for a variety of research fields due to their exceptional properties. Despite the fact that this new family of 2D materials was discovered only about ten years ago, the number of scientific publications related to MXene almost doubles every year. Thus, in 2021 alone, more than 2000 papers are expected to be published, which indicates the relevance and prospects of MXenes. The current paper critically analyzes the structural features, properties, and methods of synthesis of MXenes based on recent available research data. We demonstrate the recent trends of MXene applications in various fields, such as environmental pollution removal and water desalination, energy storage and harvesting, quantum dots, sensors, electrodes, and optical devices. We focus on the most important medical applications: photo-thermal cancer therapy, diagnostics, and antibacterial treatment. The first results on obtaining and studying the structure of high-entropy MXenes are also presented.

MXene exhibits impressive characteristics, including flexibility, mechanical robustness, the capacity to cleanse liquids like water through MXene membranes, water-attracting nature, and effectiveness against bacteria. Additionally, bacterial cellulose (BC) exhibits remarkable qualities, including mechanical strength, water absorption, porosity, and biodegradability. The central hypothesis posits that the incorporation of both MXene and bacterial cellulose into the material will result in a remarkable synthesis of the attributes inherent to MXene and BC. In layered MXene/BC coatings, the presence of BC serves to separate the MXene layers and enhance the material’s integrity through hydrogen bond interactions. This interaction contributes to achieving a high mechanical strength of this film. Introducing cellulose into one layer of multilayer MXene can increase the interlayer space and more efficient use of MXene. Composite materials utilizing MXene and BC have gained significant traction in sensor electronics due to the heightened sensitivity exhibited by these sensors compared to usual ones. Hydrogel wound healing bandages are also fabricated using composite materials based on MXene/BC. It is worth mentioning that MXene/BC composites are used to store energy in supercapacitors. And finally, MXene/BC-based composites have demonstrated high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding efficiency.

High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs) represent a transformative class of materials characterized by multiple principal elements and high configurational entropy. This review article provides an in-depth examination of their structural particularities, prediction methodologies, and synthesis techniques. HEAs exhibit unique structural stability due to high-entropy effects, severe lattice distortions, and slow diffusion processes. Predictive models, including thermodynamic and kinetic approaches, are essential for understanding phase stability. Various synthesis methods impact HEA properties, and advanced characterization techniques are crucial for their study. The article highlights current applications and future research directions, emphasizing the potential of HEAs in diverse technological fields.

Protection against microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is critical for materials used in aquatic environments, as MIC accelerates material degradation and leads to faster structural failure. Copper (Cu) has the potential to substantially improve the MIC resistance in alloys. In this study, high-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings containing Cu were deposited using DC (Direct Current) magnetron sputtering to enhance the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of various substrates. Two CuCrFeMnNi HEA compositions in the form of bulk alloys and PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings, with 5% and 10% Cu, were analyzed for their microstructural, mechanical, and anticorrosive characteristics. Deposition parameters were varied to select the optimal values. Microstructural evaluations using SEM-EDS (scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), and AFM (atomic force microscopy) revealed uniform, dense coatings with good adhesion composed of dendritic and interdendritic BCC (body-centered cubic) and FCC (face centered cubic) structures, respectively. Microhardness tests indicated improved mechanical properties for the samples coated with developed HEAs. The coatings exhibited improved corrosion resistance in NaCl solution, the 10% Cu composition displaying the highest polarization resistance and lowest corrosion rate. These findings suggest that Cu-containing HEA coatings are promising candidates for applications requiring enhanced corrosion protection.

This work is devoted to the study of the formation of nanostructured multilayer coatings (TiZr/Nb)N on the surface of an AISI 321 steel substrate depending on the deposition parameters of the Arc-PVD method. The results of the X-ray diffraction analysis showed the formation of solid solution (TiNb)N and ZrN in the multilayer coatings with an FCC structure, ε-NbN with a hexagonal structure, as well as with a small volume fraction of the ε-Ti2N and β-Nb2N phase. On the basis of phase composition data, it is possible to assume that an increase in the number of bilayers leads to a decrease in the nitrogen concentration in the bilayers and, consequently, to a decrease in the volume fraction of ε-NbN and β-Nb2N nitrides. In all investigated systems obtained at −100 V and −200 V bias potentials, ε-NbN is the main phase. The study of the element distribution over the thickness of the (TiZr/Nb)N coating confirms the results of the X-ray diffraction analysis. The use of the structure model in the form of alternating layers allows for significantly improving the adhesion characteristics of the protective coating, as well as ensuring their high hardness. Based on the experimental results, it is possible to analyze changes in the mechanical and tribological properties of multilayer coatings depending on the number of applied bilayers. The results of the study of the elastic modulus and hardness of multilayer coatings (TiZrNb)N with different numbers of bilayers showed that a large number of bilayers (small thickness of each individual layer) shows the lowest value of hardness. It is assumed that as the bilayer thickness decreases, the coating characteristics are closer to the monolayer alloy than to the multilayer structure.

Cu x -Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni high-entropy alloys and their electron-beam-deposited coatings demonstrate a tunable balance of mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and antimicrobial performance, offering a new paradigm for multifunctional protective materials. Dense nanocrystalline coatings with complex phase coexistence achieved exceptional hardness (~ 9.4 GPa) and a high elastic strain-to-failure ratio (H/E ≈ 0.05), indicating potential for improved resistance to wear and contact damage. Controlled Cu content governs surface oxide composition, simultaneously enhancing corrosion protection and enabling targeted bactericidal activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (up to 71% reduction), mitigating microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in saline environments. These results reveal a critical interplay between phase structure, surface chemistry, and functional performance, establishing a rational pathway for designing high-performance coatings and bulk alloys with environment-specific multifunctionality. Cu x -Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni HEAs are versatile candidates for industrial, marine, and energy applications where tailored mechanical, chemical, and antimicrobial properties are required.
