Robot navigation in indoor environments has become an essential task for several applications, including situations in which a mobile robot needs to travel independently to a certain location safely and using the shortest path possible. However, indoor robot navigation faces challenges, such as obstacles and a dynamic environment. This paper addresses the problem of social robot navigation in dynamic indoor environments, through developing an efficient SLAM-based localization and navigation system for service robots using the Pepper robot platform. In addition, this paper discusses the issue of developing this system in a way that allows the robot to navigate freely in complex indoor environments and efficiently interact with humans. The developed Pepper-based navigation system has been validated using the Robot Operating System (ROS), an efficient robot platform architecture, in two different indoor environments. The obtained results show an efficient navigation system with an average localization error of 0.51 m and a user acceptability level of 86.1%.

Social robots have the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with technology, providing a wide range of services and applications in various domains, such as healthcare, education, and entertainment. However, most existing social robotics platforms are operated based on embedded computers, which limits the robot’s capabilities to access advanced AI-based platforms available online and which are required for sophisticated physical human–robot interactions (such as Google Cloud AI, Microsoft Azure Machine Learning, IBM Watson, ChatGPT, etc.). In this research project, we introduce a cloud-based framework that utilizes the benefits of cloud computing and clustering to enhance the capabilities of social robots and overcome the limitations of current embedded platforms. The proposed framework was tested in different robots to assess the general feasibility of the solution, including a customized robot, “BuSaif”, and commercialized robots, “Husky”, “NAO”, and “Pepper”. Our findings suggest that the implementation of the proposed platform will result in more intelligent and autonomous social robots that can be utilized by a broader range of users, including those with less expertise. The present study introduces a novel methodology for augmenting the functionality of social robots, concurrently simplifying their utilization for non-experts. This approach has the potential to open up novel possibilities within the domain of social robotics.

Proactively detecting schizophrenia relapse remains a critical challenge in psychiatric care, where traditional predictive models often fail to capture the complex neurophysiological and behavioral dynamics preceding recurrence. Existing methods typically rely on shallow architectures or unimodal data sources, resulting in limited sensitivity—particularly in the early stages of relapse. In this study, we propose a CNN-Transformer fusion model that leverages the complementary strengths of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Transformer-based architectures to process electroencephalogram (EEG) signals enriched with clinical and sentiment-derived features. This hybrid framework enables joint spatial-temporal modeling of relapse indicators, allowing for a more nuanced and patient-specific analysis. Unlike previous approaches, our model incorporates a multi-resource data fusion pipeline, improving robustness, interpretability, and clinical relevance. Experimental evaluations demonstrate a superior prediction accuracy of 97%, with notable improvements in recall and F1-score compared to leading baselines. Moreover, the model significantly reduces false negatives, a crucial factor for timely therapeutic intervention. By addressing the limitations of unimodal and superficial prediction strategies, this framework lays the groundwork for scalable, real-world applications in continuous mental health monitoring and personalized relapse prevention.

Robot engagement in healthcare has the potential to alleviate medical personnel workload while improving efficiency in managing various health conditions. This study evaluates the impact of robot-assisted education on knowledge acquisition and metabolic control in children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) compared to traditional education methods. A randomized controlled trial was conducted at the pediatric diabetes clinic of the University of Tabuk Medical Center, Saudi Arabia. Thirty children aged 5–15 years with T1DM were randomly divided into two groups: the robot education (intervention) group and the control education group. Both groups participated in six weekly one-hour educational sessions, with the intervention group interacting with a Pepper robot assistant and the control group receiving education from a qualified diabetes educator nurse. Knowledge was assessed using a 12-item questionnaire before and after the intervention, while metabolic control was evaluated through weekly mean home blood glucose measurements and HbA1c levels before and three months post intervention. The intervention group demonstrated a significantly greater improvement in knowledge scores compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Weekly mean blood glucose levels were consistently lower in the intervention group throughout the study period (p < 0.05 for all samples). Both groups showed a reduction in HbA1c levels after three months, with the intervention group exhibiting a greater mean decrease. The engagement of the Pepper robot in T1DM education for children resulted in improved knowledge acquisition and better metabolic control compared to traditional education methods. This approach may establish a foundation for “learning by interacting with robots” in long-term diabetes management. Further research with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods is warranted to confirm these findings and explore the long-term benefits of robot-assisted education in pediatric diabetes care.

The adoption of emerging technologies in healthcare systems plays a crucial part in anti-obesity initiatives. COVID-19 has intensified the Body Mass Index (BMI) discourses in AI (Artificial Intelligence)-powered social media. However, few studies have reported on the influence of digital content on obesity prevention policies. Understanding the nature and forums of obese metaphors in social media is the first step in policy intervention. The purpose of this paper is to understand the mutual influence between obesity and COVID-19 and determine its policy implications. This paper analyzes the public responses to obesity using Twitter data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. The emotional nature of tweets is analyzed using the NRC lexicon. The results show that COVID-19 significantly influences perceptions of obesity; this indicates that existing public health policies must be revisited. The study findings delineate prerequisites for obese disease control programs. This paper provides policy recommendations for improving social media interventions in health service delivery in order to prevent obesity.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that impairs breathing. Management of asthma presents a significant challenge due to its inherent variability; that is, its symptoms can substantially differ among individuals, thereby complicating the prediction and management of exacerbations. Furthermore, individuals with asthma often have unique triggers that precipitate symptoms or attacks. The identification of these triggers can often prove to be a challenging, and at times, an impractical attempt. To address this, our research proposes a practical, personalized alert system, predicated on individual lung function tests conducted under varying environmental conditions classified by air-quality sensors. To validate this concept, we conducted an observational pilot study involving healthy individuals. We recruited twelve healthy participants and monitored their responses across a broad spectrum of environments, characterized by varying air quality, temperature, and humidity conditions. The lung function for each participant, assessed using peak expiratory flow (PEF) values, was recorded in each of these environments. Our results highlighted substantial variability in pulmonary responses to different environments. Utilizing these insights, we proposed a personalized alarm system that provides real-time air-quality monitoring and issues alerts when environmental conditions may potentially become unfavorable. We also explored the feasibility of employing basic machine learning techniques to predict PEF values in the aforementioned environmental conditions. This proposed system has the potential to empower individuals in actively safeguarding their respiratory health and mitigating discomfort caused by environmental conditions, especially in cases of asthma patients. By enabling timely and personalized interventions, the system aims to provide individuals with the necessary tools to minimize exposure to asthma’s possible triggers.
