This study compares ripple port, stacked switched capacitor, and capacitive energy storage architectures for active power decoupling, comparing the number of components, performance, energy density, DC-link capacitor reduction, efficiency, and frequency operation to highlight their main benefits and drawbacks for single-phase grid-connected applications. The overview reveals equivalent effective energy density without electrolytic capacitors, as well as enhanced simplicity, performance, and durability, thereby providing stacked switched capacitors as an attractive power-decoupling alternative for multi-stage connected applications, based on the principle that its individual buffer capacitors absorb and deliver energy without tightly constraining their individual terminal voltages, while maintaining a narrow range voltage at the buffer DC port.

In this article, a comprehensive review of electrical microgrids is presented, emphasizing their increasing importance in the context of renewable energy integration. Microgrids, capable of operating in both grid-connected and standalone modes, offer significant potential for providing energy solutions to rural and remote communities. However, the inclusion of diverse energy sources, energy storage systems (ESSs), and varying load demands introduces challenges in control and optimization. This review focuses on hybrid microgrids, analyzing their operational scenarios and exploring various optimization strategies and control approaches for efficient energy management. By synthesizing recent advancements and highlighting key trends, this article provides a detailed understanding of the current state and future directions in hybrid microgrid systems.

This paper presents a mathematical analysis of how energy return in grid-connected single-phase photovoltaic systems affects the sizing of passive components. Energy return affects the size of the link capacitor, making it larger than reported in the literature. One of the main points of this article is that an inverter connected to the grid using a DC–DC converter with an appropriate link capacitor is analyzed. The energy return is caused by the value (in Henry units) of the L-filter, which is also analyzed in this paper. The analysis shows that there is a link between the value of the L-filter and the voltage of the DC bus. The analysis assumes two conditions: (1) the DC bus voltage is always higher than the peak value of the grid sinusoidal voltage, and (2) there is a unity power factor at the connection point between the grid and the L-filter. To operate in an open loop, a compensation phase angle is calculated and introduced in the single-phase inverter modulation; this phase angle compensates the phase shift caused by the L-filter, avoiding the use of a phase-locked-loop (PLL) control system. The L-filter ripple current is evaluated by Fourier analysis, and the DC bus ripple voltage is evaluated by considering the energy returned to the link capacitor. The results of the analyses are compared with existing methods reported in the literature. The results also show that, to minimize the value of the L-filter, the DC voltage must be almost equal to the maximum voltage of the grid. Equations to assess the value of the DC-link capacitor and the L-filter in function of their ripples are developed. The results were verified with simulations in Simulink and experimentally.

The increasing adoption of electric vehicles has driven the development of charging technologies that meet growing demands for power, efficiency, and grid compatibility. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of the EV charging ecosystem, covering Level 3 DC charging stations, power converter topologies, and the role of energy storage systems in supporting grid integration. Commercial solutions and academic prototypes are compared across key parameters such as voltage, current, power, efficiency, and communication protocols. The study highlights trends in charger architectures—including buck, boost, buck–boost, LLC resonant, and full-bridge configurations—while also addressing the integration of stationary storage as a buffer for fast charging stations. Special attention is given to wide-bandgap semiconductors like SiC and GaN, which enhance efficiency and thermal performance. A significant gap persists between the technical transparency of commercial systems and the ambiguity often observed in prototypes, highlighting the urgent need for standardized research reporting. Although converter efficiency is no longer a primary constraint, substantial challenges remain regarding infrastructure availability and the integration of storage with charging stations. This paper seeks to offer a comprehensive perspective on the design and deployment of smart, scalable, and energy-efficient charging systems, with particular emphasis on cascaded and bidirectional topologies, as well as hybrid storage solutions, which represent promising pathways for the advancement of future EV charging infrastructure.

This paper presents an overview of fault-tolerance strategies in multilevel converters, with emphasis on fault diagnosis as a fundamental stage. Classical multilevel converter topologies and their main application areas, such as motor drives, renewable energy systems, and smart grids, are first introduced, along with the most common faults affecting power semiconductor devices. Fault diagnosis techniques reported in the literature are then reviewed and classified into model-based, signal-based, hardware-based, and hybrid approaches. The operating principles, measured variables, and implementation requirements of each category are analyzed, with particular attention to the fault detection times. A comparative analysis is provided, highlighting the fastest diagnostic strategies and their application to different multilevel converter topologies. This review consolidates recent advances and identifies current trends and challenges, providing a useful reference for the development of faster and more reliable fault-tolerant solutions in multilevel power converters.

Computational analysis using PSpice has become an indispensable tool for evaluating power electronics circuits, as it allows accurate simulation of transient effects, ripple, and component dynamics, enabling reliable assessment of complex topologies before physical implementation. In single-phase systems, electrolytic components are commonly used due to their high energy density, which helps mitigate low-frequency ripple caused by power oscillations between the DC and AC sides. However, these components have a limited lifespan, which compromises the system’s long-term reliability. This work proposes and evaluates the Stacked Switched Capacitor (SSC) topology as a power decoupling technique, implemented within a 200 W Cuk converter. The proposed SSC design enables a substantial reduction in required capacitance, replacing a conventional 600 μF capacitor with only three 36 μF capacitors, while maintaining voltage stability and output power performance. Simulation results show a high efficiency of 94% and a DC-link energy of 0.992 J, confirming the SSC’s ability to effectively mitigate voltage ripple at twice the grid angular frequency (2ω, rad/s) without compromising system durability. Comparative analysis with conventional decoupling strategies demonstrates that the SSC topology offers a compact, efficient, and reliable alternative, reducing the number of required passive components and switching devices. These results provide a strong basis for further exploration of SSC-based designs in space- and cost-constrained single-phase DC-AC applications.
