As LiDAR technology progressively advances, the capability of radar in detecting targets has become increasingly vital across diverse domains, including industrial, military, and automotive sectors. Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR in particular has garnered substantial interest due to its efficient direct velocity measurement and excellent anti-interference characteristics. It is widely recognized for its significant potential within radar technology. This study begins by elucidating the operational mechanism of FMCW LiDAR and delves into its basic principles. It discuss, in depth, the influence of various parameters on FMCW LiDAR’s performance and reviews the latest progress in the field. This paper proposes that future studies should focus on the synergistic optimization of key parameters to promote the miniaturization, weight reduction, cost-effectiveness, and longevity of FMCW LiDAR systems. This approach aims at the comprehensive development of FMCW LiDAR, striving for significant improvements in system performance. By optimizing these key parameters, the goal is to promote FMCW LiDAR technology, ensuring more reliable and accurate applications in automated driving and environmental sensing.

Narrow-linewidth lasers mainly depend on the development of advanced laser linewidth measurement methods for related technological progress as key devices in satellite laser communications, precision measurements, ultra-high-speed optical communications, and other fields. This manuscript provides a theoretical analysis of linewidth characterization methods based on the beat frequency power spectrum and laser phase noise calculations, and elaborates on existing research of measurement technologies. In addition, to address the technical challenges of complex measurement systems that commonly rely on long optical fibers and significant phase noise jitter in the existing research, a short-delay self-heterodyne method based on coherent envelope spectrum demodulation was discussed in depth to reduce the phase jitter caused by 1/f noise. We assessed the performance parameters and testing conditions of different lasers, as well as the corresponding linewidth characterization methods, and analyzed the measurement accuracy and error sources of various methods.

The high-precision diffraction grating is an important chromatic dispersion component that has been widely used in many fields, including laser beam combining, chirped pulse compression, spectroscopy, among others. In this paper, we review the development status of reflection and transmission gratings with high diffraction efficiency and high laser-induced damage thresholds, such as metal-film and multilayer-dielectric-film gratings. Then, we review the basic principles and most recent stages in the development of manufacturing techniques, such as mechanical scribing, holographic exposure, electron-beam lithography, and nanoimprinting.

High power and good beam quality of two-dimensional bottom-emitting vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser array with GaAs microlens on the substrate is achieved. Uniform and matched convex microlens is directly fabricated by one-step diffusion-limited wet-etching techniques on the emitting windows. The maximum output power is above 1W at continuous-wave operation at room temperature, and the far-field beam divergence is below 6.6°at a current of 4A. These properties between microlens-integrated and conventional device at different operating current are demonstrated.

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers emitting at 808 nm with unstrained GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As, tensilely strained GaAsxP1-x/Al0.3Ga0.7As and compressively strained In1-x-yGaxAlyAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As quantum-well active regions have been investigated. A comprehensive model is presented to determine the composition and width of these quantum wells. The numerical simulation shows that the gain peak wavelength is near 800 nm at room temperature for GaAs well with width of 4 nm, GaAs0.87P0.13 well with width of 13 nm and In0.14Ga0.74Al0.12As well with width of 6 nm. Furthermore, the output characteristics of the three designed quantum-well VCSELs are studied and compared. The results indicate that In0.14Ga0.74Al0.12As is the most appropriate candidate for the quantum well of 808-nm VCSELs.

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) play a leading role in modern information and communications technology. Among the core devices in PICs is the distributed feedback (DFB) multi-wavelength semiconductor laser array. Multi-wavelength semiconductor laser arrays can be integrated on a single chip and have the advantages of high stability, good single-mode performance, and narrow line width. The wavelength tuning range has been expanded through the design of the DFB laser array, which is an ideal light source for wavelength-division multiplexing systems. The preparation of DFB laser arrays with a large number of channels, ease of mass production, and accurate emission wavelengths has become an important field of research. The connection methods of lasers in DFB laser arrays are introduced systematically and the current methods of manufacturing multi-wavelength DFB laser arrays covering the perspective of technical principles, technical advantages and disadvantages, main research progress, and research status are summarized.
