In this study, a new generalized regression neural network model for predicting the curing characteristics of rubber blends with different contents of carbon black filler cured at various temperatures is proposed for the first time The carbon black contents in the rubber blend and cure temperature were used as input parameters, while the minimum and maximum elastic torque, scorch time, and optimal cure time, obtained from the analysis of 11 rheological cure curves registered at 10 various temperatures, were considered as output parameters of the model. A special pre-processing procedure of the experimental input and target data and the training algorithm is described. Less than 55% of the experimental data were used to significantly reduce the total number of input and target data points needed for training the model. Satisfactory agreement between the predicted and experimental data, with a maximum error in the prediction not exceeding 5%, was found. It is concluded that the generalized regression neural network is a powerful tool for intelligently modelling the curing process of rubber blends even in the case of a small dataset, and it can find a wide range of practical applications in the rubber industry.

The application of DCSBD (Diffuse Coplanar Surface Barrier Discharge) plasma is referred to as the surface modification/activation of materials. The exposure of material surfaces to DCSBD plasma is initiated by changes in their chemical composition, surface wettability and roughness. The given study presents the mentioned plasma application in the context of the modification of the material viscoelastic properties, namely the PVC polymer film. The measurement of viscoelastic properties changes of PVC was primarily examined by a sensitive thermal method of dynamic-mechanical analysis. This analysis allows identifying changes in the glass transition temperature of PVC, before and after DCSBD plasma application, Tangens Delta, supported by glass transition temperatures of Elastic and Loss modulus. The results of the present study prove that DCSBD plasma applied on both sides to PVC surfaces causes changes in its viscoelastic properties. In addition, these changes are presented depending on the variability of the material position, with respect to the winding of the electrodes in the ceramic dielectric generating the DCSBD plasma during modification. The variability of the PVC position holds an important role, as it determines the proportion of filamentous and diffuse components of the plasma that will interact with the material surface during modification. The application of DCSBD plasma must, therefore, be considered a complex modification of the material, and as a result, non-surface changes must also be considered.

The targeted modification of the material composition is a common procedure used to improve the parameters of the final products. This paper deals with the targeted modification of polymer systems composition using two various types of alternative fillers. The first type of alternative filler (SVD) has been obtained from energetics where it arises as a by-product of flue gas desulfurization. The second alternative filler used (KAL) is based on waste from glass production. The elastomeric systems designed for the production of car tires and solid wheels for transport systems were used in the role of modified polymer systems. Alternative fillers (SVD, KAL) have been applied as a substitution of commonly used fillers (carbon black, silica). The filler – elastomeric matrix interaction, rheology, cure characteristics, as well as hardness and rebound resilience of vulcanizates, which are important parameters for their industrial application, have been studied in the new prepared polymeric systems. The main output of the work is a new formulation of an elastomeric system for industrial applications with high rebound resilience and low rolling resistance, which is the subject of the international patent [1]. The modification of composition using raw material substitution can also bring significant environmental and economic effects.

This paper develops a technology for manufacturing a biocomposite using post-production wood waste as filler, but also as an alternative material that can substitute traditional composites. Three types of post-production wood waste, i.e., ash wood chips, oak chips and medium-density wood fiberboard (MDF), were used in this study. Three different biocomposites were produced for each of these materials, differing in the content of waste to polymer. The biodegradable and compostable bioplastic Mater-Bi (CF05S) was obtained using the pioneering proprietary technologies of Novamont company using starches, cellulose, vegetable oils and their combinations. Mater-Bi was used as the matrix of the composite, which, due to its chemical composition, allows the production of fully biodegradable composites. The physicochemical properties, such as static tensile, impact, water absorption and hardness, were investigated. The results provide the basis for a detailed analysis of the properties of the biocomposites and made it possible to accurately determine their properties. The results show that the optimal solution is the Mater-Bi biocomposite with 20 wt.% oak filler content, which shows the most favorable adhesion strength and water absorption. The research conducted here is in the context of issues related to sustainability and a circular economy, through waste management, as well as through the production of biodegradable construction products.
