The present investigation deals with a comprehensive study on the production of aluminum based alloys with the incorporation of different alloying elements and their effect on its electrical conductivity and mechanical properties. Casting of pure aluminum with different concentration and combinations of alloying additives such as cupper (Cu), magnesium (Mg) and silver (Ag) were carried out using a graphite crucible. The as-cast microstructure was modified by hot rolling followed by different heat-treated conditions viz., annealing, normalizing, quenching, and age hardening. The mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the produced heat-treated alloys sheets under various processing conditions were carried out using tensile testing, hardness, and electrical resistivity measurements. It was found that by increasing the alloying elements content, yield strength results increased significantly by more than 250% and 500% for the as rolled and 8 h aged Al-Cu-Mg alloy, respectively. On the other hand, the electrical conductivity reduces slightly with −14.6% and −16.57% for the as rolled and 8 h aged of the same Al-Cu-Mg alloy, respectively.

Epoxy coating formulations containing 1%, 3%, and 5% SiO2 nanoparticles were produced and applied on a mild steel substrate to achieve the objective of high performance corrosion resistance. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique was employed to measure the anticorrosive properties of coatings. The corrosion tests were performed by exposing the coated samples in a solution of 3.5% NaCl for different periods of time, varied from 1 h and up to 30 days. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed the presence of nanoparticles in the final cured samples. Establishing the incorporation of the nanoparticles in the coating formulations was confirmed by employing both of XRD and FT-IR techniques. The FT-IR spectra have proved to be satisfactory indicating that there was a complete reaction between the epoxy resin with the hardener. EIS measurements confirmed that the presence and the increase of SiO2 nanoparticles greatly improved the corrosion resistance of the epoxy coating. The highest corrosion resistance for the coatings was obtained for the formulation with 5% SiO2 nanoparticles content, particularly with prolonging the immersion time to 30 days.

Reinforced steel bars (rebar) are extensively used in construction, and the main challenge is in minimizing corrosion due to oxide or passive layer breakdown. In contrast, dual-phase (DP) steel has good corrosion resistance. This study investigated the effect of Cl− ions on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of DP rebar and conventional rebar. Corrosion behavior studies and electrochemical measurements were conducted on DP rebar and conventional rebar in simulated concrete pore solution with different concentrations of Cl− ions. Microstructure analysis, surface morphology analysis, and corroded surface characterization were performed using optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that DP rebar has good passivity, leading to better corrosion resistance and greater strength compared to ordinary rebar. In addition, DP rebar showed better passivity behavior compared to conventional rebar in alkaline solution. Therefore, the presence of a dual phase (ferrite and martensite) in reinforced concrete structured steel induces good corrosion resistance.

The electrochemical corrosion behavior of laser welded 2205 duplex stainless-steel in artificial seawater environment (3.5% NaCl solutions) with different acidity and alkalinity conditions (different pH values) was investigated using different techniques. Namely, capacitance measurements (Mott–Schottky approach), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The formation of pitting corrosion on the exposure surfaces of the tested duplex stainless-steel samples was investigated and confirmed by characterizing the surface morphology using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Based on the obtained results, a proportional relation has been found between pH value of the solution medium and the generated film resistance due to the processes of charge transfer, which directly affecting the pitting formation and its specifications. Since the film layer composition created on the duplex stainless-steel surface is changes depending on the pH value, it was found that different bilayer structure type was generated according to the acidity or alkalinity level. The presented bilayer is almost composed from metal oxides, such as iron oxide and chromium oxide, as confirmed by Raman Spectroscopy technique. As the pits size and its quantity increased with decreasing pH value, it can be concluded that the corrosion resistance property of the laser welded 2205 duplex stainless-steel sample is improved on the alkalinity direction of the solution. Vice versa, higher acidic solution has more ability for corrosion.

Dual-phase (DP) steels consist of a ferritic matrix dispersed with some percentage of martensite, which gives the material a good combination of strength and ductility, along with the capacity to absorb energy and enhanced corrosion protection properties. The purpose of this work was to study the microstructural and corrosion behavior (mainly pitting and galvanic corrosion) of DP steel compared with that of conventional rebar. To obtain DP steel, low-carbon steels were heat-treated at 950 °C for 1 h and then intercritically annealed at 771 °C for 75 min, followed by quenching in ice-brine water. The corrosion rates of DP steel and standard rebar were then measured in different pore solutions. Macro- and microhardness tests were performed for both steels. It was found that DP steels exhibited a superior corrosion resistance and strength compared to standard rebar. The reported results show that DP steels are a good candidate for concrete reinforcement, especially in aggressive and corrosive environments.
