Two aspects of various steels’ weldability are considered in this article. The theoretical part presents general concepts related to steel’s weldability and the application of the most important methods for its determination. In the experimental section, results of the hard-facing application to several samples are presented, and consist of hardness measurements in the different zones of the welded samples, with the evaluation of those zones’ microstructures. The tested materials included two carbon steels and two alloyed steels, with hard-facing layers deposited by various filler metals. Experimental results were compared to results obtained by calculations; using both, authors were able to conclude which combination of filler metal, welding procedure and, if necessary, heat treatment, would achieve the optimal improvement of weldability in welding/hard-facing of each of the tested base metals.

Knowing the material properties is of a crucial importance when planning to manufacture some structure. That is true for the steel structures, as well. Thus, for the proper planning of a certain steel part or a structure production, one must be aware of the properties of the material, to be able to make a qualified decision, which material should be used. Considering that the manufacturing of steel products is constantly growing in various branches of industry and engineering, the problem of predicting the material properties, needed to satisfy the requirements for the certain part efficient and reliable functioning, becomes an imperative in the design process. A method of predicting four material properties of the two stainless steels, by use of the artificial neural network (ANN) is presented in this article. Those properties were predicted based on the particular steels’ known chemical compositions and the corresponding material properties available in the Cambridge Educational System EDU PACK 2010 software, using neural network module of MathWorks Matlab. The method was verified by comparing the values of the material properties predicted by this method to known values of properties for the two stainless steels, X5CrNi18-10 (AISI 304), X5CrNiMo17-12-2 (AISI 316). The difference between the two sets of values was below 5% and, in some cases, even negligible.

In this paper, the selection of the optimal base material to be used in the repair welding process is presented. The aim of the study was to determine which of the available materials has the best characteristics, based on an analysis conducted in a company engaged in construction works. Three base materials were considered in the study: ABRADUR 58, E DUR 600, and CrWC 600 electrodes. Repair welding was performed on components for a construction machinery facility using the manual metal arc welding procedure. For the selection of the optimal base material, a combined Multi-Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) approach was applied. The base materials were evaluated based on four attributes: wear track width, cost, mass loss, and hardness of welded layers. The Best–Worst Method (BWM) was used to determine the attribute weights, while the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and Ranking based on the Distances And Range (RADAR) methods were applied in parallel for the ranking and selection of base materials. The analysis showed that in the considered case, the E DUR 600 electrode was the most suitable choice, which was confirmed through the application of both the TOPSIS and RADAR methods.

Hard-facing as a type of the coating depositing is increasingly used today. Physical-chemical-metallurgical characteristics of contact layers in tribo-mechanical systems depend on the operating conditions and the conditions under which the work surfaces were created. That is the reason the influence of the processing procedures and regime, used in the contact surfaces formation, on development of the wear process of contact elements, is being considered ever more. To determine the influence of the hard-facing technology on characteristics of the gears’ working surfaces, the experimental investigations were performed on samples hard-faced on the steel for cementation, by varying the filler metals (FM) and the hard-facing regimes. The samples tested were hard-faced by five “hard” and three “soft” filler metals. Experimental investigations included measuring the hard-faced layers’ hardness and determination of their microstructure, as well as the wear resistance in the laboratory conditions, on tribometer and on a specially designed device for tests in the real operating conditions of gears. The wear intensity was monitored by the wear trace’s width in the laboratory conditions and by the share of the teeth surfaces affected by the destructive pitting in the operating conditions. The results obtained were compared to results of the base metal (BM) tests, which provided the certain conclusions on which filler metal and which welding procedure are the optimal ones for regeneration of the worn teeth surfaces.

Due to difficult pandemic situation with COVID-19 decease, as well as due to current geopolitical circumstances in the world, we are facing the shortage of steel and therefore the impossibility of delivering the contracted products within the agreed deadlines. It is thus necessary to find suitable steel for replacement. The procedure for selecting one such steel for substituting the deficit steel 25CrMo4, for the purposes of producing a responsible welded assembly, is described in this paper. After the careful analysis, the steel 42CrMo4 was taken into consideration as a possible substitute material. Prior to applying the new selected steel, it was necessary to perform the following tests: analyze its chemical composition, determine its most important mechanical properties and evaluate its weldability. Then, the optimal welding and heat treatment technologies were determined, so that the quality of the responsible welded structure would meet all the requirements, as the structure made of originally used steel. For the new steel, all the mentioned and some additional tests were conducted and the appropriate welding technology was prescribed. To verify the selected technology, appropriate tests were conducted on the model welded samples, the results of which are presented in this paper. Based on the analysis of the obtained results, it was concluded that the 25CrMo4 steel can be replaced by the 42CrMo4 steel, however, with the mandatory application of appropriate supplementary measures.

The aim of this paper is to show influence of two elements on plastic strain ratio value, or "r" value. The first element is value of plastic strain, and second is specimen geometry. Extensive experiment was conducted according to appropriate tensile test procedure with 3 materials and 5 different specimen geometries. Steel sheet S235JR, austenitic stainless-steel sheet X5CrNi18-10 and Al alloy sheet AlSi0.9MgMn (i.e. ENAW 6081) were used during the experiments. Nominal thickness for all three sheets was 1 mm. Three out of five specimen geometries had 20 mm width and gage length of 60, 120 and 160 mm while the rest of specimens had width of 15 mm and gage length of 50, 100 mm. All the specimens were laser cut in rolling direction. In preparation part of the experiment, behind material characterization (obtaining base mechanical properties) identification of homogenous deformation field was performed, i.e. plastic strain at the beginning of localization, for each specimen. Related to that strain value 6 degrees of deformation were realized: 75%, 80%, 85%, 90%, 95% and 100%. Results showed expected and significant difference in "r" value for used materials, but influence of specimen geometry and realized plastic strains were low.
