The incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enhances the mechanical performance of rubber composites. This study examines the effect of single-walled CNTs (1–4 phr) on the properties of a natural rubber compound for sealing applications, both before and after thermal aging, as prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can alter material properties, affecting durability and functionality. The researched nanocomposites were subjected to a series of mechanical tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, and surface investigation using atomic force microscopy (AFM). After adding 4 phr of CNTs, tensile and tear strength increased by 11.73% and 14.64%, respectively, while aging-related strength degradation was reduced by 5%. CNTs also increased complex modulus and hardness but reduced elongation at break and rebound resilience. Residual deformation in tensile and compressive set tests decreased. AFM analysis confirmed improved surface stability after thermal aging compared to the CNT-free compound.
In connection with the growing importance of the efficiency and reliability of tools in industrial sectors, our research represents a key step in the effort to optimize production processes and increase their service life in real conditions. The study deals with the comparison of the tribological properties of three tool steels, two of which were produced by the powder metallurgy method—ASP2017 and ASP2055—and the last tool steel underwent the conventional production method—X153CrMoV12. The samples were mechanically machined with the finishing technology of turning and, finally, heat treated (Q + T). The study focused on the evaluation of hardness, resulting microstructure, wear resistance, and coefficient of friction (COF). The ball-on-disc method was chosen as part of the COF and wear resistance test. The tribological test took place at room temperature with dry friction to accelerate surface wear. The pressing material was a hardened steel ball G40 (DIN 100Cr6). Measurements were performed at loads of 10 N, 6 N, and 2 N and turning radii of 13 mm, 18 mm, and 23 mm, which represents a peripheral speed of 0.34, 0.47, and 0.60 m/s. The duration of the measurement for each sample was 20 min. The results showed that the COF of powder steels showed almost the same values, while a significant difference occurred with the increase of the radius rotation in the case of conventional steel. The results within the friction mechanism showed two types of wear, namely, adhesive and abrasive wear, depending on the Q + T process. From a tribological point of view in terms of wear, it was possible to state that the material ASP2055 after Q + T showed the lowest rate of wear of all the tested steels.
The polyamide PA6 composites reinforced with carbon fibres (CF) are widely studied due to their properties and their high strength to weight ratio. Good adhesion between a filler and a matrix is essential for enhancing properties of a resulting composite. This study investigates the effect of the short CF content and the used CF treatment on mechanical properties of the PA6-CF composites. The composites were subjected to tensile, flexural, compression, hardness and Charpy tests as well as dynamical mechanical analysis. An atomic force microscopy was employed to investigate topography of the CF and the composites. Initially, the properties of the composites were improved through the oxidation of the CF in HNO₃. Subsequently, to further enhance these properties, the oxidized CF were grafted with nano-SiO₂. The CF content in the tested composites varied from 10 wt% to 60 wt%. The most significant improvement of the tested properties was observed at the CF content of 40 wt%.
The work deals with the creation of 3D model of a disc brake of a personal vehicle, followed by a simulation of thermal and strengh analysis during car braking in the SolidWorks program. The disc brake is made of a gray cast iron, the most common material for this application. Cast iron discs offer excellent performance, making them suitable for various types of vehicles. The deformation of a brake disc was analyzed by using the program SolidWorks, where the first a simulation of the thermal load was performed, the aim of which was to determinate the temperature distribution on the brake disc and display the temperature rise during braking. In the next part, the simulation of strength deformation was carried out, and thus determination of the thermal load effect of the brake pads on the brake disc.
