Recently, piezoresistive-type (PRT) pressure sensors have been gaining attention in variety of applications due to their simplicity, low cost, miniature size and ruggedness. The electrical behavior of a pressure sensor is highly dependent on the temperature gradient which seriously degrades its reliability and reduces measurement accuracy. In this paper, polynomial-based adaptive digital temperature compensation is presented for automotive piezoresistive pressure sensor applications. The non-linear temperature dependency of a pressure sensor is accurately compensated for by incorporating opposite characteristics of the pressure sensor as a function of temperature. The compensation polynomial is fully implemented in a digital system and a scaling technique is introduced to enhance its accuracy. The resource sharing technique is adopted for minimizing controller area and power consumption. The negative temperature coefficient (NTC) instead of proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT) or complementary to absolute temperature (CTAT) is used as the temperature-sensing element since it offers the best temperature characteristics for grade 0 ambient temperature operating range according to the automotive electronics council (AEC) test qualification ACE-Q100. The shared structure approach uses an existing analog signal conditioning path, composed of a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). For improving the accuracy over wide range of temperature, a high-resolution sigma-delta ADC is integrated. The measured temperature compensation accuracy is within ±0.068% with full scale when temperature varies from −40 °C to 150 °C according to ACE-Q100. It takes 37 µs to compute the temperature compensation with a clock frequency of 10 MHz. The proposed technique is integrated in an automotive pressure sensor signal conditioning chip using a 180 nm complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) process.

A low power 12-bit, 20 MS/s asynchronously controlled successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to be used in wireless access for vehicular environment (WAVE) intelligent transportation system (ITS) sensor based application is presented in this paper. To optimize the architecture with respect to power consumption and performance, several techniques are proposed. A switching method which employs the common mode charge recovery (CMCR) switching process is presented for capacitive digital-to-analog converter (CDAC) part to lower the switching energy. The switching technique proposed in our work consumes 56.3% less energy in comparison with conventional CMCR switching method. For high speed operation with low power consumption and to overcome the kick back issue in the comparator part, a mutated dynamic-latch comparator with cascode is implemented. In addition, to optimize the flexibility relating to the performance of logic part, an asynchronous topology is employed. The structure is fabricated in 65 nm CMOS process technology with an active area of 0.14 mm2. With a sampling frequency of 20 MS/s, the proposed architecture attains signal-to-noise distortion ratio (SNDR) of 65.44 dB at Nyquist frequency while consuming only 472.2 µW with 1 V power supply.

A fully on-chip, low-power and small area CMOS Relaxation Oscillator (ROSC) with voltage integral feedback structure and a new Bandgap Reference voltage (BGR) for accurate oscillation frequency independent of the PVT and comparator's delay variations is presented. The designed circuit uses a new bandgap reference to generate the reference voltage required by relaxation oscillator which allow variations due to voltage and temperature to be compensated. Another merit of this oscillator is that the phase noise at low-offset frequency is suppressed by the voltage integral feedback circuit. The frequency of the relaxation oscillator is determined by the RC response time. Thus, the current and capacitance are controlled by temperature and process compensation circuits to compensate for the frequency variation. The ROSC is implemented in a 0.18μm CMOS technology and its active area is 0.14mm 2 . The target frequency is 25MHz and current consumption is 22μA, where V DD is 1.8V. The oscillation frequency variation for V DD ranges from 1.4 to 1.9V is 0.2% and for temperature ranges from -40 to 125°C is 0.18%.

This article presents a 2.4 GHz and high-efficiency wireless power receiver (Rx) integrated with a low-power transmitter (Tx) for wireless charging of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) or wearable devices. A single pole double throw (SPDT) circuit isolates the operation of the Rx from Tx, thereby offering the capability of sharing antenna between them. The Rx employs a high-efficiency radio frequency (RF)-dc converter, which is facilitated with threshold voltage cancellation technique for enhancing the efficiency, and adjustable internal impedance matching network to compensate the nonlinear behavior of the input impedance with respect to input power level. In addition, it includes a boost dc-dc converter to charge the storage element with a fixed voltage and current. The Tx utilizes a low-power phase-locked loop (PLL) and a class-D power amplifier (PA). Several techniques are adopted to achieve low power consumption. The chip is implemented in a 180 nm CMOS process with a die size of $2.3\,\,\mathrm {mm} \times 5\,\,\mathrm {mm}$ . The Rx shows the measured RF to dc maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 53.8% at the input power level of 0 dBm. The Tx achieves a variable output power range of −10 to 10 dBm, while consumes 4 and 23 mA at 0 and 10 dBm output power, respectively.

A 12-bit 80 MS/s hybrid type analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for high sampling speed and low power applications is presented in this paper. It has a subranging architecture with a front end of 6-bit Flash ADC with five channels of 6-bit time interleaved synchronous Successive Approximation Register (SAR) ADC. The proposed architecture with a shared 6-bit Flash ADC and time interleaved SAR ADC provides a power and area efficient high speed ADC. The proposed Time-skew calibration is implemented to minimize the discrepancy between the output of Flash ADC and SAR ADC’s channels. To rectify the decision error of the Flash ADC and extract the time-skew information, 1-bit redundancy is included in the CDAC of the SAR conversion. The decision error between the Flash ADC and the SAR ADC is covered with designed redundancy and the mismatch between the ADCs is covered with the time-skew calibration. To reduce the offset mismatch between Flash and SAR ADC and within SAR ADCs, all comparators are calibrated to minimize their absolute offset by utilizing background offset calibration. The modified dynamic strong ARM comparator is used for flash ADC and dynamic latched comparator is used for SAR ADCs. For fine offset calibration and low power consumption, the comparator’s offset calibration circuit is implemented. To reduce the kickback noise and enhance the overall energy efficiency for fast operation of SAR ADCs, rail-to-rail dynamic latch comparator with modified adaptive power control (APC) is implemented. The proposed ADC structure has been implemented in 130 nm CMOS process. The ADC has an effective number of bit (ENOB) of 10.97 bits while consuming 7.08 mW current consumption from the 1.2 V supply voltage.

In this paper, a low-power and small-area Single Edge Nibble Transmission (SENT) transmitter design is proposed for automotive pressure and temperature complex sensor applications. To reduce the cost and size of the hardware, the pressure and temperature information is processed with a single integrated circuit (IC) and transmitted at the same time to the electronic control unit (ECU) through SENT. Due to its digital nature, it is immune to noise, has reduced sensitivity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), and generates low EMI. It requires only one PAD for its connectivity with ECU, and thus reduces the pin requirements, simplifies the connectivity, and minimizes the printed circuit board (PCB) complexity. The design is fully synthesizable, and independent of technology. The finite state machine-based approach is employed for area efficient implementation, and to translate the proposed architecture into hardware. The IC is fabricated in 1P6M 180 nm CMOS process with an area of (116 μm × 116 μm) and 4.314 K gates. The current consumption is 50 μA from a 1.8 V supply with a total 90 μW power. For compliance with AEC-Q100 for automotive reliability, a reverse and over voltage protection circuit is also implemented with human body model (HBM) electro-static discharge (ESD) of +6 kV, reverse voltage of −16 V to 0 V, over voltage of 8.2 V to 16 V, and fabricated area of 330 μm × 680 μm. The extensive testing, measurement, and simulation results prove that the design is fully compliant with SAE J2716 standard.
